I don't like the way the light looked in the video, but I like the idea of moving lights.
I wish Notch would implement them D:
Same here. What if he made a "transition," block, that has light textures partially on it, so it creates the illusion of smooth light while still being blocks. Though I suspect it might cause extreme lag.. But I'm no programmer, so IDK.
I don't have a problem with how moving light is implemented in that video, really. It's better than nothing. I'd actually prefer a 'miner's hat' type item so that you could have light and still be able to hold something other than a torch, tho.

This, only the mining lamp would project a beam of light 90 degrees in front of you instead of all around, like a flashlight.
I think the reason why Notch isn't going to implement moving light sources is SMP. This would create a ton of chunk updates and slow a server down quite a bit. Imagine all in one chunk, moving minecarts, redstone pulsers, doors opening and closing, and like eight players wearing dynamic lights.

I believe the mod shown in the video makes it so your head is radiating the light, though I may be mistaken.
I like that it moves like that. it fits the game well. theres should be a craftable headlamp that would only shine a small amount of light and only in one direction
So with BetterLights we no longer have to place a torch, and pick it back up every five blocks to travel at night? SWEET. I CAN ACTUALLY CARRY A TORCH NOW
I don't think any of you really understand, even you qwertyz.
We used to have that kind of torch lighting.
Playing with a torch in hand like that for an hour made me sick.
Not sick enough to throw up, but still sick.
Notch removed handheld torches because they were nauseating, not because 'it didn't look that great'
There was also a lag problem, but according to Notch, that has since been solved.
Only nausea stays the return of handheld torches.
This makes no sense. I've played on a server that had a mod that made a torch follow you around, giving you basically perma-light, and I can't see how that would give nausea.
it's far better than how lighting is done now. maybe he should figure out a way to have two hands in use as well. Sword in one hand, torch in the other. Or is that making things just too damn smart for Minecraft?

I find this very hard to believe. It just makes no sense at all. If it made some people nauseated then they could simply not use it and it would be as if it wasn't even in the game for them. Why penalize everyone else because some people get sick and apparently have no self control and insist on making themselves sick by using a feature that isn't even required of them. Some people can't even play the game because it makes them sick but we don't see Notch making the game 2D so as to help these people be able to play the game.
Anyway, this was back in dev, the days not long after coal stopped giving half-blocks, and gold blocks were *new*.
Notch was working on indev, but updated classic... adventure mode? with the moving torch update.
light moving lagged badly, and the moving torches made me sick.

Some people are more motion sensitive than others. I didn't find that video nauseating but I can see how it could effect some people that way. I'd personally ask Notch to make dynamic lighting something that can be toggled on and off in Options, that way if someone finds it too nauseating they can just disable it. I also reckon it should be Client side for this reason, as well as to keep server-side resources up.
You won't get it from a thirty-second video that doesn't mine a single ore, trust me.
Mine ores with that light for an hour, and you WILL feel what I am talking about.
a few hours was enough to weigh me down thoughroughly. I was deliberatly going out of my way not to have the torch out whenever possible.Wincing as I inched my torch near the ore vein I had rushed past,I attempted to comprimise between necessary ore and my headache.
Yea it was bad.
The moving torch update gives me a forboding feeling.
I don't doubt that it made you sick but I highly doubt that that is why he took it out. The lagging seems like the only real reason for taking it out. I highly doubt most people that play this game would get sick from the moving light. And again, As I said, you didn't have to use the moving light so if you got sick from it then it was your own fault for not just placing a torch on the ground to be done with it the way it is now.
Ehhh..
Sorry if it's old news, but yeah.
I think he was being sarcastic* -- Also, i swear ive seen that GIF...
*Edit; If anything, torchlight needs to be orange, and less light'ing, and it might be better

Notch always said he disliked moving lights.
I personally agree with him, because the moving light seems so.. I dunno, I just don't like it.
The main point of this thread was to share the video though.

Um.. source please? Videos of this ever happening in MC?
I'm sorry to question you, but I never heard of that kind of torch lighting ever being in MC, let alone how they got removed.
