There have been a few topics about this.
I do believe I may have found the reason, and if not, a cool bug anyway.
Try generating a new world and building some crap. Now, whilst playing on that world, delete it from the world select screen and generate a new map in that slot without leaving the pause menu.
You may find, as I have, that some of the stuff you have built will be "randomly generated" on the map. Also, if you turn around and look behind you, the chuck do not fit together smoothly.
Maybe this only happens to me or maybe it was just a freak glitch which happened a few times. That's why I want you guys to try this out too and see.
Hm. I tried this out. So far every time I try it, the game crashes while attempting to generate a new world. Wierd.
*edit*
After a few more times I did finally get it to load up without crashing. Sure enough, my city I build it there in ruins. Not only that, but I even found some chests still filled with items in the ruined buildings. Pretty sweet

I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.

this would make multiplayer servers so awesome. When the map's reached it's apex, just generate a new map over the top of it, and there's ruins! Like jumping forward in time or something.

Ha! I don't even know the meaning of the word, "Illiterate!"
I wonder if Notch could modify this to create "realistic" ruins. It would be sweet
I'm thinking thats a good idea. I mean, when MP Infdev comes out, were going to have these huge servers. If something is like 5 days old, someone may stumble across what was once a pristine castle for example, but is simply now a pile of ruins. These could be a source of resources, or people may just attempt to rebuild it.

It's a bug because I'm pretty sure Notch didn't intend it to happen.
You heard that, green and red.
Hahaha, I get it!
I think it just overwrites the old save and only deletes blocks that fit in the level generation algorithm.
hmmmmm
Notch is a mouse. The beard is a disguise.

Made the new world
Spawned right next to it.
