Sorry but I do not want to spend 15 seconds and my diamond pick condition every time I want to turn off the portal when it can simply be made to interact with a switch in some future update.

15 seconds. Wow, anyone who would waste that on a game has no life. Seriously.
Diamond pick condition is 2065 hits. Lowering it to 2064 hits instead of hitting "TURN OFF SOUND" button is too much of a waste. I really think it should be raised to 2066 hits. Seriously.
I think that portals are meant as sort of a double-edged sword. On one hand, they're a handy device for fast traveling - and for entering the Nexus, of course. On the other hand, they bear (well, haven't experienced this yet) the danger of spawning ghasts. If they could just be taken offline via the simple press of a button whenever you feel like it, the dangerous part about them would be kind of pointless.
Still, I agree that the portal sound should only be audible in a very small area, something like 7x10 blocks around the portal (3 blocks in any direction from the frame).
Also, I think that the background in the Nexus loading screen should be something more mystic, like the everburning Nexus-stone or the purple portal texture.
Wait portals can spawn ghasts? I was not aware of that. Oh and mine are in a room. I have mine in my basement and even so sometimes the noise still seeps through.
