"Horses are not needed, pointless, unnecessary. We already have amazing ridable mounts. The faithful pig . Jeb should work on more important things and stop adding things that players can already download."
Dear seventonblade. You say there are hardly and reason to ride pigs. I find this puzzling because the pig and the horse both complete the task of transportation, so if there is no use to ride a pig there is no use in riding a horse, except for the fact the pig rider looks cool doing it.
i was looking threw the pics. also there is capes (not minecon), horse on hind legs, 4 shads of chicken, a pic clad "book.png" but the pic was to fuzzy, skeleton on a horse, new beam like block, the hay, and at least 9 different horse textures. http://i.imgur.com/cKZZXK6.png
If Mojang stopped adding features that mods already take care of, then they might as well stop making updates for the game entirely, because experience tells me that there is a mod for just about EVERYTHING out there. What you're implying is that Mojang shouldn't have to work on the terrain code, despite constant criticism, all because there's a mod out there called Better World Generation that fixes part of the problem. Not everyone uses mods. This brings me to another point; every time a new update does come out, every mod automatically becomes incompatible with the new version, and you have to wait for the mod creator to update their mod IF they ever even do. Next to that is it's simply annoying to have to update manually; all these things I hope should be taken care of by the Mod API that they keep constantly delaying.
... And yes, but I am saying that since they appear to be adding horses, they're probably going to be more convenient mounts as opposed to pigs in a number of ways. I'm saying that using the current pig as transportation really does not provide great deal of help, and it's mostly just an added bonus. All the other mobs usually provide important resources which are often unobtainable or rare finds through other means, such as: creepers provide gunpowder (although they're not the only mob, they are the only common source of it) for TNT; chickens provide feathers for making arrows; cows provide leather for books and such; sheep provide wool; and so on. Considering that pigs take a long time to accelerate, they are not really that reliable for urgently outrunning mobs like say... a creeper that just so happens to be a few blocks behind you; in fact, it's even less reliable than simply sprinting, because with sprinting, the acceleration is immediate. If you want *fast* transportation simply to get from place-to-place, then that's part of what minecarts are for (and so is Nether transport), and that's only favorable if you have the resources (for survival mode) and don't care that the direction you go in is automated. The only major benefit I see to mounted transportation in its current state is not draining your food bar as you walk or sprint while you're in the open, which really, most of your time will mostly likely not be spent "going out and exploring" but rather in the mines and/or bashing mobs outside your home; not something you would need or even want your pig for. There are just not that many benefits to going by pig rather than foot. I should also say that, unlike just about every other mob (not including boss mobs), since pigs lack resource drops, there are still no incentives other than food (which most other mobs still drop) to farming and breeding pigs because if meager transport is all a pig can provide, then you only need to have one pig in most cases. You would probably only need one horse too, but that horse would be able to provide much quicker and more reliable transportation than your pig (not to mention the eager possibility that they could serve as pack animals) that there would be more reason to want a transport animal, and this gives Mojang a reason to try and find another use for the pig that will make it useful again, and hopefully farm-worthy. Either that, or they just not add horses and make the pig do as good as a horse would, which I'd rather just have horses in my personal opinion because, well, I like horses, and more mobs and life in Minecraft is always a good thing; not to mention I'd rather not ruin the current pig-riding mechanics either, such as by completely getting scrapping the carrot-on-a-stick; the one thing that horses shouldn't need.
Who says that a horse would be more useful to run away from mobs ? Who says that pigs are slow ? Tried rightclicking with carrot on a stick? I also do NOT like horses (opposing to your argument that you like horses).
Also : Every thing that horses can can be applied to the pig, which is easier than adding a whole new mob.

Maybe the horses will be able to wear armor, And will last much longer than the pig. Maybe adding horseshoes to the horse will increase it's speed. Maybe adding a spike to it's helmet will allow you to Ram enemies.
The fact is, we won't know what the horses will do until they are released, or in a future snapshot. I don't see why people are complaining when there are still possibilities with the horse.

I complain because the horse is NOT, in any way, from what we know now, different than the pig. If they manage to make them likeable for me I will change my opinion, for I do not think anyone should share my opinion if they don't want to and I do not do ad hominem, but for now, I do not like them.

Ugh. The only thing that would restore my faith in the dev team at this point is if the whole twitter post was just a huge troll, and we are really getting something completely unrelated to horses.
Yeah, they've been adding some nooby stuff lately. Ahem, pumpkin pie.
I've actually seen there be made mods for things that seem very hard to make considering Minecraft's engine. I've seen one for colored lights, increased height limit, etc. both of which, have stopped being worked on for a long time. And I'm sure we'd all love these them if they could appear in the actual game without having them become outdated every time the game updates. Of course there isn't a mod for EVERYTHING, but there certainly are mods for something if a handful of people think it would be cool or useful.

I'm aware of the right clicking ability. As I'm told, once you reach top speed on the pig, the rate of speed is 8 blocks/second. When you sprint, you're going at about 5.6 blocks/second, and when you add in speed potions, the gap becomes easily bridged, and I've already mentioned the difference in acceleration. Also, from my experience, the pig's speed boost actually lasts shorter and fluctuates more than a Speed II potion, so if you think about it, speed potions essentially may have already made pigs obsolete. The difference is that there are certain pros and cons to each, and I'm thinking IF horses are going to have any major pros, then they're also going to have some major cons also, and the major con with potions is it costs more resources. However, if you're pretty far into a Minecraft world, and you're essentially able to farm these resources, that, in terms of functionality, speed potions can easily become more preferable than a pig, so leaving the "cool factor" aside, why should a "higher level" player need a pig? As for horses, maybe for cons, they'll be pretty rare, just to make you feel rewarded once you finally find one. I also propose that they only appear in Plains biomes, because feral horses seem to live in large, open grassland habitats the most.
Really though, I understand it's just a difference in opinion. But it seems they're adding horses anyway, so I don't think they're going to buff pig-riding at this point.

I think the rareness isn't really good to balance things out. If you are lucky, you find horses next your spawn. If you have bad luck, you never see one. (Like the Witch Hut).
But yes. I have a very negative opinion on horses. You have a positive opinion on horses. Discussing things in a civil manner (you being a bit more civil than me I must confess) is a great thing to spend your time with.

The thing is, I don't really want horses in vanilla minecraft. It's always seemed like something to stay in Mo' Creatures, and for some reason I'm kind of disappointed that they're confirmed.

Well then kill the horses everytime you see them so they go extinct.
stupidist thing to be added if it does really get added i'm boycottting this "sandbox" game (cough gloryfied rpg with slight building elements cough)
minecraft was supposed to be a build and survive game not a rpg seriously horses? i'm glad i stopped playing this trash why people make clones of this "great" game is so stupid there are literly no words to discribe the stupidity of mojang.

Praise be to Spode.
Oh great... It will be even worse with the random mob skins mod.
You have to keep feeding your horse apples to keep it going fast.
Almost like you feed your dog raw meat.
