I've heard lots of rumors about 1.5, and I was wondering if people could tell me what they know about 1.5, and make sure you specify if it's a rumor or confirmed.
"Rendering engine rewrite. Current engine has some bugs.
Support for high resolution texture packs
The geometry of individual textures can differ
Much faster overall rendering, thus higher FPS
Includes the lighting fixes first introduced in snapshots 12w39a/b (during 1.4 development)
The features were:
Support for fancy lighting control
Support for more realistic lighting, such as active furnaces only giving off light from their front surface
Redstone repeater lock improvements
Some redstone bug fixes" Source

What does the thing about geometry mean?
Also, what is the rendering engine?
The rendering engine is the set of protocols that determine how the computer processes the world and turns it into visual information on your monitor. It's why you can see the trees and the grass and everything else the way it's meant to be seen. What they're doing is gutting the current code and making it more efficient in how it converts the data into visual information. That's a layman's explanation for it.
Wow, 1.5 sounds like an awesome update!
I don't even care if they add new items or whatever, I just love the idea of fixing major problems with the code.
I want this to be a maintenance update. No new blocks/mobs/items. I want the Mod API/new rendering/new lighting/higher FPS.
Hopefully, that's what we're all waiting for. Thank god, no more complaining "But I don't like the new content that mojang gives to us for free for no apparent reason other than to thank us for buying their game!" Of course, people will probably still complain "I hate the new mod API, why can't we just use modloader?"
If there are red dragons coming in 1.5 (doubtful), I REALLY hope they pull it off right, as in not too complicated, but definitely not simple.
Also, didn't dinnerbone talk about terrain updates? Maybe those will come around in 1.5.
If they manage to do it within time of Christmas, I will be amazed. If they rush it out, I will be sad.

He did mention overhauling the terrain code to make it easier to manipulate. This would allow for terrain sliders that can help make the map, while still being random, be more towards your preference. Also, it would allow for world any official vanilla world presets easier to create.
Me either! With low settings, my fps went from 6-14 on average in 1.2.5 to 170-200 in 1.3.1. It was the best though not everybody received a boost. Hopefully, this time around, everybody will receive a universal increase of fps.
If you were trying to be rude, it worked. I found on the Minecraft wiki that this was marked as planned by Mojang, and it is possible that it may be implemented in 1.5.

Yes, I believe he did. They even discussed a special terrain modification for the dragon. But I agree. It would be nice by christmas, but better take time than rush it.
No API.
New rendering engine.
New lighting.
Terrain sliders. NOT a new generator.
Content.
The second and third points are all I care about. More fps and fewer bugs (after the initial chaos) instantly with those.
How do you know the API will not come out by 1.5?
Also, I believe that the terrain generator will be changed, as to achieve sliders they will most likely have to change it somewhat, and also I think they will get a huge amount of hate if they are just like "here's your sliders! No new terrain generator for you kthxbai"

Herp derp I just remembered isn't the modding API coming out? LOL, that should make it easier
Is that when it's coming out? Christmas?

Praise be to Spode.
