it was really fun to discover new potion recipes and effects
now its so bureaucratically lame....
meh I don't know maybe they should add it back in addition to this new system, that way u can make combo potions but it will cost u more ingredients and might have a negative effect as well as positive (remember the nauseating water breathing speed potion :P)
I just feel the new alchemy system is under powered garbage and boring
You miss something that was only around for like one snapshot a long time ago? I don't think I even got around to using it because it was changed so quickly. Why do you miss it all of the sudden?

Don't know what the old system was like but the new system seems to work just fine for me. Although I do tend to use it exclusively for brewing fire resistance potions. I will say that cauldrons are fairly useless now. They should make them where they can hold an infinite amount of water. Otherwise it's much easier to just dig a hole and fill it with water.
I wouldn't mind if brewing stands were left as they are, and cauldrons could be used to create more advanced potions, with multiple effects like the old system.
"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."

indeed
and I brought this up because frankly the new alchemy system is BORING and the potions are weak
only useful ones are fire resist and water breathing tbh
Brewing stands felt like a huge step backwards regarding alchemy IMO. With cauldrons, you could get a much nicer variety of potions since the length of each effect can vary, you can have more than one effect on a potion, and there are three levels of effects rather than two. Choosing brewing stands over potions (which only have an advantage of having a GUI) is one of Mojang's decisions that utterly confounds me. If Mojang thought that a GUI was worth a better alchemy system, why not add a GUI to the better alchemy system? What was the real point of choosing brewing stands over cauldrons if it's a direct downgrade in nearly every way?
FYI, to those who have never heard of it: it was never actually accessible in the snapshots back in 1.9 (1.0). You had to use a mod in order to use them as they were buried in the code.
Op seems very late, though. You're speaking of it as if it was in 1.6 or 1.5 or something even though it was barely in the game halfway through 1.9/1.0.
Cauldrons would be cool, although personally I'm fine with the Brewing Stands. However, I do have my opinion on how Cauldrons could be improved.
Firstly, quit all this nonsense about glass bottles not removing any water when used on water blocks. One of the biggest reasons why Cauldrons are useless is because you can easily have a pool of water which you can use to infinitely fill up glass bottles. That ruins the Cauldron's supposedly new use (after brewing was changed to the Brewing Stand). In my opinion, glass bottles should use up water when used on water blocks in the same fashion as how water is removed in Cauldrons.
Secondly, stepping into a Cauldron with water (perhaps only a Caulron that is full) while the player is on fire should put out the fire.
Thirdly, being able to place potions into the Cauldron would be great (to fill the Cauldron, three potions are required). Depending on how full the Cauldron is, the effect would be stronger (when there's only one layer, there's barely anything touching you, so the effect should be lessened).
Fourthly, brewing potions together. You can place multiple potions in the Cauldrons (up to three different potions, obviously). However, for them to brew together into one overpowered potion mix, you need to have fire under the Cauldron...or have it near lava...or even just have it in the Nether, whichever floats your boat. When mixing potions together, each effect lessens in power and the duration of the potion mix would be of whichever potion mixed had the lowest duration (excluding instant health and damage potions). Speaking of Potions of Healing and Harming, if they are brewed into a mix that has potion effects with durations, than the instant health and damage effects will only take effect when the potion is first consumed, not throughout the entire duration of the potion.
Fifthly, third level potions. Those could easily be brewed through the Brewing Stand using some sort of material (an entire block of glowstone?), so that's not a problem considering the Cauldron.
Sixthly, the Cauldron can be used for more than just potions. Brewing Mushroom Stew, anyone? (Mushroom Stew really should be cook-able. Cold Mushroom Stew? Ehh) Perhaps pouring milk in it so that you can have a potion-immunity bath! Perhaps if the liquid inside is being boiled through means previously stated, it would create vapour/steam and damage the player if the player steps inside. Possibilities are (sort of) endless!
In terms of the Brewing Stand being implemented purely for user-friendliness, I too think that was a bad move. In my opinion, Minecraft could do with less user-friendliness; you are surviving the wild! I'd personally like a Minecraft mode in which the names of items, blocks and other things wouldn't appear (because in real life, I'm pretty sure chicken doesn't say "chicken" above it). It would add to the survival aspect. I see Brewing Stands as a more efficient form of Brewing than Cauldrons, because it doesn't require heat (being made of a Blaze Rod, it makes sense) and therefore uses less space, would be faster at brewing and you wouldn't need to empty bottles and carry them around - you place the bottles into the brewing stand, making the process a little more efficient.
i have started after the brewing system edit but i think the old brewing is intesting. brewing now is like a furnes but the old brweing system is neat and trial and error stuff so GO OLD BREWING!!!!!

Also, at least go into more detail. What is wrong with the brewing stand? Why was the cauldron system better? Also, you should tell people what the heck the old system was, because hardly anyone really knows.
I am so mad at the Sky fanboys who are like "ADD BUUUDDDER TWO MINCRFT CUZ BURDR Z SP ASWUM ND STUFZ BUDDERBUDDERBUDDER :D:D:D:D" that I am dedicating my signature to stopping them. I had gone into more depth, but the stupid signature limit stopped me. Oh well.

You can put them in the nether and use them to fill empty bottles.
Chickens tend to get stuck in them, so they can be used as part of an automated chicken farm.
Other than that, decoration is about all they are good for right now.
(Bear with me please because I just came up with this idea a few minutes ago and it is not very fleshed out yet)
What if there was a way to somehow incorperate both the Brewing stand and the Cauldron into the potion system. One possibility could be to use the brewing stand to make "simple" potions. These would be similar to what we have now and probably be made in the same way. However, only the basic variants would be available. No higher potencies or extended times would be accesible at this stage. You would then pour up to 3 of these into a cauldron for "advanced" brewing. Here you can mix any number of ingredients to get multiple effects, higher potency, increased time, etc. However, the results will be unpredictable because of the possibility of reducing the effectivness of the potion or even negative effects. But the rewards would be worth the risk if you find the right combination, as the potions will be much more powerful then they are now.
Another possibility would be to start the process from the cauldron, similar to how the old system worked. However, once you get your finished potion, you have the ability to "refine" it in the brewing stand. This can allow you to, if you know which ingredients to add, reduce or even eliminate certain negative effects. It may also increase the potency of the positive effects. The brewing stand will basically become a more controlled way of experimentation.

For real? I never knew that. Sounds interesting, I might have to play it, but this guy is complaining about it just now?
no u can write the recipes on books (or signs in the old days)
frankly it would add a use to books as well
eventually after much experimenting I was able to make some pretty sick potions with 3 effects

im sure most people would have raged hard over it were it been more publicly known
