After seeing a bit of complaining about snapshots, I decided to make this thread.
Snapshots are not mini-updates, they are more like beta updates that Mojang has opened to the public for bug testing and to let people get an idea what the update it. Really, if you look at most other games, they never do this and just make the update before releasing it.
They are bound to be bugs, and it is your job as the snapshot tester to find them and report them. Mojang is not going to iron out bugs before releasing every snapshot. Yes, they will fix bugs found in snapshots, but will not search for any themselves before releasing said snapshot.
New features are not necessarily "confirmed" until the update and can be drastically changed before then. Usually, they stay with a few tweaking, but sometimes completely changed or removed. Example: horse saddles.
Snapshots are, again, not mini updates and are just released whenever Mojang decide some bug finding or feature teasing in needed. So they might release littler or big ones any time, from a week or month later, maybe even more.
Snapshots are not a necessity and is completely optional to Mojang. Keep that in mind before you complain about snapshots.
If you really think this thread is gonna stop people from complaining, it isn’t.
I’ve also never heard somebody compare snapshots to “mini-updates”. I don’t even know what a “mini-update” is. If it has “update” in there somewhere, it’s an update, not a “mini-update”.

By Mini Updates I he means like .3 .4 and all that stuff.
Also this might work all the "Please don't use budder for gold" Threads worked. I barely see people with "Oh look at my budder/butter house!" anymore.
Nice topic maybe people will stop asking for updates.

Well said and excellent point. So much needless conjecture, complaining, and bickering results from the snapshots when they are, indeed, made for testing. It would be a happy world if that was the focus of those testing the snapshots...you know, to find bugs. But yes, it is great fun to try out new features and all, too. :-)

Ahoy, Oh Great and Mighty Flying Spaghetti Monster! Touch us with Thine Noodly Appendages! Let us glory in your great and wondrous meaty balls! May your holy beer volcano be everlasting and your stripper factory be without end. RAmen!!
i personally think of them as small updates, simply because they are small, and they update the state of the game, whether it changes the way the game works or is pure bug fixes, i consider them updates, because they change a part of the game.
saying they are "just" beta tests and not real updates, that's like saying all of minecraft before the official release was not "really" a game, same way you are now saying snapshots aren't "really" updates.
The point is however, these are explicitly for testing.
True, snapshots are just "alpha" and "beta" versions of the updates. And as it usually happens, alpha/beta versions have bugs, problems and may corrupt things to hell.
I remember that in one snapshot you could apply seeds to famrlands using dispenser... It was at the ysame time they changed how bonemeal worked (when it stared requiring more than one bonemeal to grow crops) and when they addes the use for dispensers to apply bonemeal... cant remember the exact snapshot.
Anyways on the version release that feature wasnt added in the end... dont know why but it wasnt there... theres probably some more examples..
Mojang has the kindness to give us the snapshots to test the upcoming features, tweak em and fix bugs if needed but some people cant stop complaining about things, its just like an obsession they have. We all should apreciate that we can test the new additions BEFORE they are released and that we can give our opinnion about them.
People are A:creatures of habit, and B:Not going to change because of point A
I personally veiw Snapshots as said "Mini Up-Dates" becasue its adding somehing to the game. I considers to UPDATE my game, hence changng it so it is different, hence adding new features.
If you don't like people doing this, why do you critisize them? Tehy beleive things differently then you do. Tehy arnt going to chnage just because you tell them to. Sorry Hun.

Then by that philosophy, I shall consider your post a mini-update, and conclude that your lack of proofreading or effort at grammar marks you as being too lazy to fix any of your own work. Therefore I should just complain about your bugs because you released your post with so many bugs.
But we wouldn't want you to feel bad over receiving such blind criticism, now, would we?
Snapshots are entirely optional. If you prefer a more complete gameplay experience right now, then feel free to play 1.6.4 and enjoy the feel of an actual game update. With snapshots you take the chance of experiencing game-breaking bugs. There is no guarantee of them not happening. Treating Mojang with complaints because you feel snapshots should run better is very selfish on your part, and rather unrealistic thinking. They don't have to share these snapshots, as by now they have enough of their own crew for troubleshooting and bug-fixes to watch out and take care of such things. These snapshots are a gift to help players experience new game content that would otherwise be out of our hands for what could be up to half a year or more. Heck, Mojang really doesn't have to be putting new content in as they have more than enough now to consider a full game and they can just devote their energy to their other new IP's. They do these updates because it is still fun for them, and they appreciate keeping the game fresh for long time players such as myself. So it might be worth it upon yourself to show some appreciation, and respect the work they are doing instead of acting so self-entitled. It doesn't serve you or those around you with any benefits.

In the real world, you stick your head in the dirt to hide from problems.
In Minecraft, you stick your head in the dirt to find problems.
Except snapshots are mini updates that mojang releases weekly. They're entire purpose is to test bugs and features for later 'proper updates'. Meaning if someone complains about something in a snapshot, they're actually making the game better.
After seeing a bit of complaining about snapshots, I decided to make this thread.
What complaints, exactly? Because if people say "this snapshot sucks" that's valuable feedback. Of course it's even more valuable if it's "this snapshot sucks for x, y, and z reasons, and this is how it could be improved". But I don't think you're talking about those kinds of complaints.
I guess you're talking to the people who say "Mojang shouldn't release buggy, unfinished snapshots"
Snapshots are not mini-updates, they are more like beta updates that Mojang has opened to the public for bug testing and to let people get an idea what the update it. Really, if you look at most other games, they never do this and just make the update before releasing it.
ehhhh, semantics. They're a preview of an update. That's a lot of prefixes, so I know it's hard to parse.
They are bound to be bugs, and it is your job as the snapshot tester to find them and report them. Mojang is not going to iron out bugs before releasing every snapshot. Yes, they will fix bugs found in snapshots, but will not search for any themselves before releasing said snapshot.
"It's your job" oh good, now where's my paycheck? Seriously, I paid Mojang money for the game. They work for me, not the other way around. My job is to play the game and have fun. If I decide somewhere along the line that my experience isn't up to par, I think Mojang would much rather I posted a rant about "publishing unfinished content" than give up and play a different game.
New features are not necessarily "confirmed" until the update and can be drastically changed before then. Usually, they stay with a few tweaking, but sometimes completely changed or removed. Example: horse saddles.
Now we're getting into some actual meat. Generally speaking, new features are introduced in the snapshot and stay in the game in the final version of the Update. If you complain after the release, people yell at you "you should have said something while it was still in the snapshot stage!" The best time to complain is early and loud and often. And if you're wrong, as complainers often are, then Mojang needs to grow a pair and be able to decide for themselves how to develop their game. Take the good ideas, and put aside the bad ideas for further consideration.
Snapshots are, again, not mini updates and are just released whenever Mojang decide some bug finding or feature teasing in needed. So they might release littler or big ones any time, from a week or month later, maybe even more.
I don't think that's the reason they do snapshots. It's because the audience will forget about them if they stop putting out snapshots. In today's competitive game industry, if you're not putting out content, people will think you went away and stopped developing, and they will forget about you.
Snapshots have the side benefit of getting some feedback, and saving money on paid game testers, but the real purpose is to maintain the public's attention.
Snapshots are not a necessity and is completely optional to Mojang. Keep that in mind before you complain about snapshots.
These days, I'd say snapshots are entirely a necessity. If Mojang didn't put out frequent snapshots, someone else would grab all the attention. Likely Feed the Beast. And Mojang would find itself less and less relevant. This is what happened to Infiniminer, and many many many other good games.

What's your point? Snapshots are released specifically for public testing and discourse. Your semantics add nothing to this conversation.
If they tried to make each snapshot as polished as an update, as you seem to want, then each snapshot would take as long as an update to release because they'd need to test the heck out of every tiny feature before they released it. But with snapshots they can give that JOB to us so that the real updates can come out faster.
I guess I wasn't exactly clear with what it is that I want. I do want snapshots, and I do understand that they're going to be unpolished. But I want them to be slightly better quality than they are now. I want Mojang to work slightly harder. And I want them to be more experienced so they can avoid dumb mistakes like the stupid zombie pathing from 1.6, which was in the snapshots, but was never removed from the final release.
And I want their attitude to improve. I don't like hearing "I'm sorry you don't like our FREE update" (Dinnerbone certainly doesn't work for free) and "If you don't like new feature X, don't update" (maybe I like most of the other features in the update) from Dinnerbone on Twitter. These are noobish statements, and not worthy of a Minecraft dev.

Problem is that they call them snapshots. So people just don't think.
Proabaly be worse if they called them beta's or test builds. because people don't think.

Pretty much everyone acknowledges they are buggy, unconfirmed testing releases.
