Why so serious about the rose being replaced? The new red flower serve the exact same purpose, providing 2 pieces of red dye. It's nothing a resource pack wouldn't fix.
The old rose never looked like a rose - no, not even a wild one. It always looked more like a poppy. So I personally like that change, and find the constant whining about it that some people are engaged in to be pointless attention seeking behavior.
The large oceans had become a problem with the nerfing of boats. And it was, frankly, boring to spend long periods of time crossing oceans in a tiny boat. Now, if it had been possible to craft a larger boat, big enough for a bed, crafting table, etc - and had there been oceanic bad mobs to fight off - kraken and sirens trying to lure you into playing Maplestory . . .
-The new biomes look relatively nice, at least as long as there isn't a river in sight. The exceptions are the new EH and the new swamps.
-The flowers have excellent sprites IMO, though I feel like they could be a bit more useful besides dye.
-Fishing is now something you will do, but it isn't perfect yet.
Dislike:
-The biome grouping system. It causes you to run into a ton of the same biomes over and over again, leading to a feeling of a more repetitive terrain generator. It also doesn't actually fix biome transitions like a 1.7.3-style temperature system could, it just makes the worst offenders nearly impossible. On the other hand, it makes the worlds feel more like a world. However...
-...oceans are now small and, due to the new-old "massive continent with tons of lakes" style in the generator, it makes the world feel less like a world. One step forward, one step back. At least this is more playable compared to what we had but it's not really the best option.
-IMO EH was made worse. The stone acts a lot like the old (beta 1.7.3) underwater bedding, just on land; you get a huge swathe of grass followed by a huge swathe of dirt followed by a huge swathe of stone etc etc etc. Even on flatter parts of the biome close to sea level. It looks better when the stone is only on a peak and there's no grass around, but from what I have found that's very rarely the case.
-The new trees are just mix-and-match styles from the existing trees. I don't doubt that it's a placeholder, though (but if Mojang keeps them I'll be ed), so I don't really consider it a problem.
-Swamps are better but still fugly. Transitions are pretty awful; we all know that. Logically, the best thing to do if you're going to keep this system is to try to make them less common (even then, it's pretty stupid to keep this system, but it's because of Anvil that transitions are so bad and I doubt Mojang is willing to change it). Swamps throw that idea out the window and introduce splotches of a different grass color with the same horrible transitions as usual. And they STILL don't look like swamps, they look like they came straight out of Hollywood.
-Minor, but roofed forests aren't all that dark. They're, for the most part, just very very cluttered compared to other forests. Double or triple their height, double the size of the canopies, and space out trees a bit more. I want to explore Mirkwood, not an even more overgrown bonsai forest than normal.
-Adding gravel to the underwater bedding splotches. You want to get rid of that hideous feature, not make it worse!
---The update did not restore variation. It basically added a bunch of new variations of biomes (the M biomes, some of which are overhauled by another biome such as Flower Forests instead of something like a Forest M), a couple of new base biomes (amusingly, Birch Forests are technically one of them IIRC, though I may be wrong), and some other tweaks like biome grouping. In no way does any of this restore variation (new biomes do as much to fixing the world generator as picking up a rock and throwing it off a mountain does to destroying the mountain). In fact, the only place i've actually seen height variation is in Flower Forests, which leads me to believe that i'm not actually seeing height variation.
I like everything so far, especially the new flowers and biomes! The 1.7 snapshot has been great. Sure, I was a tad disappointed to see no additions to the ocean (besides its size decrease), I'd like to have seen fish mobs or more boat types, but that perhaps was too much to ask for (and it's only the first snapshot!), and I'm still definitely excited for 1.7.

I like everything so far overall. New fishing mechanics gives more reasons to go fishing and the terrain is more varied than before. The only thing that is not really good in my opinion is the lack of clay in oceans. I can understand tough that this is can still change in the future so I am okay with it.
I basically just hate every single part of 1.7. I just don't find these biomes useful, and a lot of the new biomes are only minor variations and some of the biomes are ripoffs from mods... 1.7 is just adding a bunch of useless updates, basically. At some point mojang has to stop updating minecraft with stupid little things and think about something that is actually going to help gameplay. Let's summarize 1.7.
-added new biomes
-added new flowers
-changed the options menu
+ new biomes
+ new flowers
+ depper oceans
+ water breathing potion
- removed roses
- Enchanted books can get more than 1 enchant.
- Gravel oceans
- No clay in oceans = water breathing useless
- No oceans. (just lakes)
- Sprint button
I think this is a great update lots of new stuff and the public has been asking for new biomes and here they r and bug fixes too I think its a epic update and I would give it 5 gold stars
Mojang just literally ran out of good ideas after 1.5... so they're just updating to add useless new content.
1.7 Dislikes:
-Now I can only find same biomes over and over
-Some of the biomes look like they were built by a three year old
-Most new biomes are only minor variations of the current ones. So why add them?
-New flowers. Really? Flowers are far from a major aspect of the game.
-Now oceans are too small. In fact, I wouldn't even call them oceans anymore...
-Achievements now per server. Not big, but really?
-Can no longer get technical blocks.
-Packed ice, podzol, grassless dirt, red sand. Seriously, what's the point?
-Nether portal resize. Seriously, this is kind of killing the game aspect.
1.7 LIkes:
-Command block 256 character limit lifted
-New commands are convenient.
Seriously, though, when are we going to be able to connect minecarts? Mojang announced this in 1.5 but they still haven't gone through with it.
The only gripe I have about the new update is the fact that the Mesa biome looks absolutely horrible. Then again all the new clay blocks look horrible. Since when was black purple?
Anyways, I love everything that they have put in. I just hope we can GROW the new trees with their own saplings.
The one thingh that makes survival much better, in my opinions is the improving of enchanting probabilitys, especaly for books. As they now can get more than one enchantment, you can take the item you want and put on the book, depending on your needs. So if the book has Fetherfalling and sharpness, and I have a good sword, i could put the book on a pair of boots.
I also am realy enjoying the new commands. They make some stuff much easier, and genneraly improve everything.
I'm a huge fan of 1.7 so far, and hope mojang will keep it up.

The only blocks added were packed ice and podzol
The rose is like a sacred item, removing it is removing all the memories us old minecrafters had, when the rose was implimented.
We need our rose back, I'm happy we still have our regular "Flower" though. --- Mojang, DON'T TOUCH THE FLOWER.
Oh and OT:
I like everything so far, except Gravel Oceans, the new sizing of the Oceans, and the removing of the Rose.
