It makes no sense at all. Renaming an item grants you no advantage of any kind to unbalance the game's sandbox. It's just cool.
Made even worse when you try to combine enchants and then rename the item - sometimes you can't do both, because you hit the level cap. I really hope this is a bug or just something that wasn't addressed before the snapshot came out. Logically, I should be able to name my diamond sword Anduril as many times as I want.
Kinda have to agree to a point. I don't care for the renaming thing (might be more useful for books as would editing), but it should be half a level rather than 5...

Need or want a cheap reliable sever host? Well, Obsidian Hosting is just the right place!

It's expensive because it's so easy to level up! Breeding, Mining, Smelting, and Killing are all ways to level up and they drop plenty of EXP. I think the prices are worth it.

Why does it cost anything at all? It doesn't cost XP to title a book. I can always just refer to the sword by a certain name in my head, and the gameplay is the same.
And like I said, the name cost can reduce your ability to combine enchants by taking away from your level capacity.

The XP is needed because of the way you name your tools: You pick up the tool, you find the sharpest corner of the anvil and you start craving whatever you're trying to write (writing needs experience too :v). After all that work, tell me you didn't need quite a lot of experience to do that.
(You also need to crave a little heart at your tools, because they were the chosen ones for you to name and love for all your life).
Maybe they don't want people to rename absolutely everything they own because it would result in more weight on the game when it has to load things? Or for servers, maybe?

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Exp is only common if you mine or kill mobs and focus on it. Otherwise, you barely get any. I'd usually get to lv25 then some creeper kills me and I lose it all again, maybe I should start wearing armor. :/
Nonetheless, I'm not going to name my stuff when I could make 5 enchanted picks in its stead.

If that were the case, they would have to severely limit the amount of written-in books the player is permitted to have.

Exactly. The Exp cost makes the renaming feature pointless. Why would you use it when you could cram an extra enchantment into your pick with those experience levels?
I think renaming should be completely free. That's how it works in real life... lol
The game is to easy now anyway. Some things need to be expensive.
How is the game too easy? Isn't it more challenging than it has ever been? Also, I also think it's stupid that naming items costs experience. Especially when the limit is 40 experience points. They should take off the limit so I can have a bow with four enchantments and name it something cliché.

I fail to see how charging the player for the naming of an item, an aesthetic touch purely for entertainment value, which has no effect on actual gameplay, makes the game objectively "harder". It's just obnoxious and it doesn't make sense.
The enchantment combining/repair system is expensive enough. I suppose you support an Exp cost for writing in books too, then?

Well, I suppose books require feathers and ink, different color wool requires dye of some sort so having some cost to rename items isn't unheard of, I would agree that the current cost of it is. Personally I'd go with 1 to 3 levels if just renaming a item, but none when repairing or combining items and doesn't cost any anvil usage.
Sorry, still doesn't make sense to me. I've got this decorative sword hanging on my wall, maybe now I'll call it the Eviscerator. What sort of work did I have to do for that, because it seemed like none to me.

Wait...what?
Think about it....
But, 5 levels? That just seems to be too much.

Reality = Minecraft
Work = mine, kill mobs
Money = exp
Understanding the subtle analogy I was making?
