I keep hearing that fire is going to be really overpowered and that it'll destroy everything you have and all this, but I looked in the latest few snapshots and I can't find any fire-related updates. What's going on with it?

I can tell you're new to Minecraft since you have never heard of when fire used to be where it never stops spreading. This option will be available to Hard difficulty.
And no it's not overpowered, it's actually very entertaining back when a whole forest was burned down because of a lava lake.
What's ironic though is that to me, this is a buff to Flint and Tinder. Finally I can realize my dream of scourging entire jungles from the face of the world! Not to mention applications in the field of rapid demolition, for both structures and scaffolding.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."

I'm not all that new, been playing for a year or two. The only thing is I got stuck in the "newb" stage for about 9 months and I didn't do anything but run around and build dirt huts.
I do think they should make fire however, have different burn speeds for different materials.
= FAST!
= medium
= Slightly slower
I think leaves however should burn different speeds depending on the biome. cold, snowy tiaga brush should burn slower than crunchy brown leaves of the plains or desert trees.
However I am happy they are finally making fire not be as useless as its been for the past few months.
also a pile of wool burning out at ALL seems...kind of silly.

Thank you for the explanation though
This will just enhance PvP in my opinion.
