any tips for building along terrain for a natural/sprawl-type look? most cities i've seen involve flattening vast amounts of mountains and layouting grid blocks.
I know this is a dang old topic, however it gave me ALOT of ideas on what to build.
If the topic creator still visits the forums, thanks for this thread :wink.gif:.
I'm here, and even better, I'm still working on a huge update for this thread. The bad news is that progress is slow and time is sparse. Though, because everything is going to be reworked, I might update in chunks (update the first third of the post, then the second, then third) to keep this topic relevant and up-to-date. So far, the final update introduces a pistons section and a couple sections focusing on design.
Also, glad to hear people are still referencing this and getting things from it.
One of the things that I do, when building, is look at real world examples of very unique architecture and structure of the city as a whole. One of my goals is to create a city very similar to that of a Mexican island city Janitzio. There is something very appealing to buildings stacked on buildings, with rising, tiered stairs up to a monument.
So really, do your research, have a clear cut idea on what you want to make. Will the city be set up more realistically with the buildings. Will it follow a universal theme in visuals, or will it be some strange amalgamation of anything and everything. There are a lot of ways to plan a city and even more types of themes and ideas. What is most important is having a plan and having that core concept of scale discussed earlier.
Don't be discouraged, it takes a lot of time to build anything in minecraft, so don't be upset if it doesn't look right initially. Keep trying. I tend to make a rough shape of buildings and rooms and then start to define them and add more detail (start with the boxes and expand).
Wow, this is precisely the sort of thing I've been looking for. I'm glad I finally stumbled upon this thread, though I wish it had been sooner! So eminently useful and inspirational, and not just the Mega-comprehensive building list. Thanks for speaking to Builder's-Block, as I've been struggling with that for the last couple months, having gotten tired of half-finished castles. Can't wait to see the updates. Bookmarked for being worth more than :GoldBar:.
Whats that? You want an update? Done.
The first update is out, having completely redone everything up to the "Materials" section (I haven't modified the layout of anything after, except the final change log and notes). I've also added one or two hints at whats to come next (you may notice some dead links in the Table of Contents).
NOTE: I NEED IMAGES!
With the revision, I've dumped the majority of the old pictures, and I need new ones. Find an appropriate screenshot, crop it down to a maximum of 800x600px or 600x800px (try not to resize it), and send it to me via this thread or a PM.
Lastly: Feedback. This is the first run on the update, and I'm sure there are many errors or missing information. Don't be afraid to point them out.
Excellent update! Some suggestions for future update, in relevance to the different forms of town layout should be, what I like to call, "The Town Square," layout with buildings and roads leading to a central location, a park, well etc. This allows for centralized locations for players to gather and landmarks for navigation. This makes it easy to expand on as well, as you simple create other town squares, depending on how large you want your city to become. I am working on a small swamp town and, when finished, will put up images using the town square concept.
Hello I'm gonna start posting a lot on this form. I have world now devoted to experimenting. Please tell me how to post pictures cause I can't figure it out.
More people need to see this, that building list is impressive. The buildings in your example cobblestone city still look very boxy and boring, though. It also doesn't really conform to any of your styles.
I'm sorry if this is sounding overly critical. I love a lot of your ideas, and i'm amazed this thread doesn't have more popularity.
Well done, man.

About my city: It was part of the inspiration for this thread, and was under construction when I first created the thread. It predates most of the ideas which is why it doesn't show them, along with it being a test in many ways. I am thinking of remaking it (seeing as the world was my first world after biomes were added) and using the new city for the thread.
As for getting this thread noticed, the issue I'm seeing is that people aren't posting (though it is used quite a lot). Thus, the thread doesn't get as much views and can't really get popular. I can only hope that maybe the thread can make some news site when I finish the update (which, by the way, is still slowly being worked on).
When I first saw this thread I thought it was going to be a widely noticed and used thread, but because of the lack of posts on it, it has gone unnoticed.
I hope more people post on this seeing as it offers an excellent tutorial.
Maybe I will post pictures of my city to try and keep this thread "bumped"

Cool, makes sense. I'd encourage you to remake it. If you put even half of your ideas into it, it'll end up looking good.
Also, to readers: if you like the thread, for God's sake, post something and give a +1.
Do you think you, or someone else, could write a little bit about building on multi-level surfaces or on the side of cliffs perhaps? Clearing out the land gets boring after a while and it's pretty much impossible to do with cliffs, which sadly I'm surrounded by right now.

No one is perfect at first and it takes time.
