If the judges and contestants all already played on the same whitelisted, plugin-ridden server, sandsalamander's idea would obviously work to perfection. It's just not possible with our current contraints.
Sure is a lot of talk about how a contest should be run, when A. it has no reward (is purely for fun), and B. you are not even entered in it as a judge or competitor. Hmm.
When is this happening? I will only join if it's 1 day instead of 3 days.
You don't have to build on all three days. The idea behind this system is that you can build any time in the 3 days that you are free, and then submit it whenever you're available so long as you are in by the deadline.
In Top Chef:
action-packedness:: #of viewers:: success of the show
In Redstone Wars:
action-packedness:: #of players:: success of the game
See what I'm getting at?
You're implying that people would enter in both Top Chef and Redstone Wars for the same reason, when this is far from the case. In Top Chef, there is a prize, is there not? Some sort of a deal where they get to cook some fancy place, or win a lump sum of cash, yada yada yada. The intensity of Top Chef comes from the fact that they are all fighting so hard to win the same prize. Here, though, it's purely for fun. If we offered a $50,000 prize like they do, I'm sure tons of people would be interested. It's just a different scenario. The purpose here is to test yourself and build for fun, not to stress over building a contraption under time constraints.

If you want to know what I'm talking about here's one that could perfectly suit the competitions needs, although it is not white listed.

Go to creative and do /plotme auto. You'll see what I mean then.
Reasons why I'm debating on this thread:
1.) It's fun 2.) I'm trying to adapt the game to be more fun/ adaptable to all potential players, including myself.
Also, I have to admit that you make a good point on your last statement.

No. If we needed a server, any of us could host it ourselves. Now,
Note that if you responded with 1 hour every day for 3 days, someone could just test and figure out a way to do it in their spare time outside of the hour. Same thing as the "you can work for 3 days" tactic.
The difference, however, is that one is fun and interactive for anyone, including those who wish to drop in to take a look at the build progress; the other is 2 people building alone for 3 days and then only judges looking at the results. This is even relevant to prizes, because the pride of finishing the project under pressure is a prize in some way.

You're right in every way. Your idea would be perfect. It's much more fun and challenging, and it could be spectated, perhaps drawing in more players for the next tournament.
BUT, you STILL have not payed attention to the slew of problems that I listed out for you. I'll list them again for you:
- sabotage/interference
- server lag
- coordination of players
- inability to use external tools
- people going afk while the clock is ticking
Don't you think that avoiding those problems altogether is much easier than trying to go around them with a convoluted array of plugins and rules? I'm trying to keep this simple and easy. Sacrificing the tiny, insignificant luxuries that you proposed is perfectly fine if it means running the game smoothly.
We will have a 3 (maybe 2) day time limit. End of argument.
Please stop arguing with us about a game that you're not even a part of. I hope you will join us, but if you aren't going to, then I will have to kindly ask you to stop posting on this topic.

In the original post, I said that you shouldn't sign up if you can't be online reliably for days at a time. Orchestrating a competition like this requires lots of communication... and if you don't think you can be online as frequently as necessary, then please don't get yourself into this.
This competition will last for a great deal longer than 1 day. At least 4 weeks, if everything goes perfectly as planned. However, I can't assume that it will, so it will probably take about 5 or 6 weeks, almost a month and a half.
Just for the record, I actually did address nearly all of your problems, other than server lag. But, I am willing to stop arguing, as I see that you simply don't care to take the time to refine the competition, or you just really like your way and are not willing to change it. I know that no one cares, but unless the topics are REALLY creative and interesting, I don't think I will be participating.

Orchestrating.. Communication... Online? Umm I thought you said that your method eliminated the need for this.. Sorry for continuing the argument, just thought I should point that out.

Can the thing you have to build really be anything? like farms, computer components, piston extenders etc?
Yes. For example, the first round could theoreticaly be "Build a horizontal double extender without diodes". The next round could then be "Build an efficient sugarcane farm whose storage is 50+ blocks away without the use of hoppers". They are generally simple tasks, but each is given a twist to make it difficult. "Construct a compact dual-edge detector without pistons."
