I recently been working on a tower called the Sky Needle on a household server and want a garage door because their will be cars in the server. Dose anyone know how to make one?
Unfortunately there's no "nice" way to do it as pistons can only move blocks a maximum of one space (they can move 12 at a time, but still only one space). So you have to push up from below or down from above to raise/lower the door. Which means that during the open/close process, your door will be filled with pistons. They can be pulled back out of the way, but its an aesthetic thing. Sand and/or gravel can be used instead if your door opens upward. You can push up as many layers of those as you need and they'll fall back into place as your pistons retract. But whether its pistons or sand/gravel, some type of block will have to be in the way during the open process (closing is better because the block that's "in the way" will be the door itself, so no ugliness there).
Of course if you want a smaller door (I've seen up to 5x5) and don't care about how it opens (visually), then there are other fancy piston contraptions out there. Of course none of them can open the door without some of the mechanism showing due to that one-block-move limit on pistons.
Would be neat if they would add a similar tick system on the reapters to the pistons, so you can adjust the length of them
Well you can do this manualy, it just takes a bit of work. Through pulse limiters, lengtheners, and delays it is possible to create a system that has some pistons stay open for longer or short periods of time compared to others. This makes moving blocks around with pistons quite effective, but sometimes creates more work than desirable for a simple concept.

He meant the block length, not the extension time. The latter is easy to do (if occasionally large) with standard circuitry. There's nothing you can do about the length of the piston though so we're stuck with double, triple, etc extension circuits, which are a pain at best.
Basically, looking for the same kind of "cleanup" change that repeaters gave to double-inverters when extending (/delaying) redstone. I'd say it would be really cool if the things extended once per tick (while powered) up to the set extension length, and retracted once per tick (while unpowered). That would allow smart circuit builders to pulse things at the right timings to have the same piston do various different extensions (though you wouldn't be able to hold a piston at a specific extension other than min or selected max).

I thought that might be the case but if not I was going to put in that note anyways. I think the easiest way to go about this all is to use a gravity effected block to push the door up or down, then have it fall out of the way.
You could possibly try making a piston ring and have it rotate between solid blocks for closed and open fence gates for open. Simpler than making a portcullis gate thing.

Functional, but pretty ugly. Most people like their open doors to appear as well.. open :wink.gif:. Not to mention you'd need somewhere for the other end of the piston tape. Can hide it in the walls for two blocks but more than that and you're going to have a challenge. Though you could have a 3/4-tape configuration on both top and bottom that's fed by sand/gravel. I think it would be more work than a regular multi-extender though.
a. He would have to be the owner of the server to install that
b. I'm pretty sure he meant in 'nilla minecraft (it's generally a dumb idea to reply to people who ask how to build things with mods, unless it can literally only be done with mods)
c. Its more fun to build with 'nilla redstone :smile.gif:

a. Isn't building a garage door also his problem?
b. True dat.
c. It is always, ALWAYS very strongly implied in the redstone section. When people ask how to do something that can be done without mods, NEVER reply with a mod.

a why did he start a project if he doesnt know how to finish it
b i won
c he installed a car mod, so why not this one 1 mod more or less

a. People do it all the time: They get a good idea, don't know how to finish it, then ask here for help. Help them instead of directing them to a mod
b. Good for you
c. Y U NO understand?! When on the redstone forums, if someone wants help with a circuit, one helps them do it in vanilla minecraft. That way, there's no spam like "Use mah redsone mod it duhs everthang" on here. It also just creates a less confusing environment if people can just ask for something instead of having to specify which mods they have, if they want to use mods, etc.

a mmksgjdfjk he's an idiot what else
c Y U NO UNDERSTAND IF HE USED 1 MOD WHY CAN'T HE JUST USE ANOTHER ONE
You won in that you achieved your goal of... What? Adding me to your friends list?
i am never wrong that's what i achieved and i added you to my friend list because i can? i actually add every single person that starts to be mad in order to make it even more mad!
I did not start the project yet im just looking for your suggestions on how to make one.look I thank all you people for your comments and suggestions BUT I have looked up a few youtube videos and think I have the right blueprints. thx :biggrin.gif:
