Me and a friend came up with a very simple design for a Automatic Melon/Pumpkin Farm. Most of the farms I have seen use more than one repeater, while this one only uses one. I build the farm above ground so it is easy for you to see, but you can easily build it underground.
I like the idea so far. My idea for being able to collect the drops left on the dirt would be to have signs above the water canals and then have a water stream come in from the side and collect the drops. Not sure this would work though, as I haven't messed around with water streams much, but if you keep the rows of melons and pumpkins 7 or less blocks long, then this could work.
You can automate things further by using more repeaters. You could use block detection to automatically trigger the harvest mechanism. I'm assuming water washes away planted seeds, so the gathering mechanism would be a little more complicated if you didn't want to replant.
Well, if you make it so the water only sees the central canal as the closest drop to it, then it will go there. Thats why I thought my idea may work. But, I'm not sure if the water will still see the drop under the signs or not.

Enjoy and tell me what you think :smile.gif:
If you had water above the sides where the melon and pumpkin items sit if water was to fall down it would take the nearest path off and well it wouldnt trample the vines so it would take the items with it to a collection point if made correctly, just alot more wiring with pistons and alot more redstone.

Have withstood pain to create many weapons
Yet, those hands will never hold anything

I haven't updated to 1.8 yet, so I don't know the mechanics, but what if you pushed the pumpkins/melons up a block (breaking it?), but hold it there.
Have blocks to either side above the harvest row. Once the harvest block is up a level let water flow over it to a collection point. Close the water, and return the harvest row back down.
Yes, I would agree, only semi-automatic. But in reality, you can only do semi-automatic because either way you will need to till the dirt back. Which is why it wouldn't hurt if I leave the farm as it is (without another canal bringing the melon/pumkin to you) because you have to go back and till the ground. It would be cool to make it more automatic though.

I like that idea, I will probably try it when I have the time :smile.gif:
