Nice city, Sheena. A lot more sprawling than my dank, dark kobold hole. Probably safer to walk around outdoors, too, though. The yard is starting to get so littered with traps I don't know where to walk. lol
Massive screenshot-filled Kobold Update!
I redesigned the drowning trap because it was bugging me. Got 3 kills with it the first night after...don't think it's killed anything since, though.
Also, it caught a squid.
Added another simple suffocation trap above my front door so the drops fall down into the foyer.
Next up, an assisted pit trap. First step is, as usual, to dig some holes.
Redstone.
Usual sticky pistons, facing inwards this time.
Slap some dirt on it...
...and pressure plate the sonofabitch.
View up from the bottom of the pit.
Trapdoor access to the pit for drop collection.
The dreaded spider-jocky...and like 4 creepers, a skeleton, and a zombie right outside my front door. >_<
I also constructed an observation tower leading out of the town. Pressure plate activates another snare trap right outside the door.
Another trap I've played around with, specifically targeting zombies, is a trapped door. Zombies do their typical bang-on-door routine...
...and get shoved into and trapped in a room where the only means of escape is suicide!
Also added a fairly standard snow golem defense turret.
Under the water I installed a aqueduct for collecting drops.
Tangent: giant slime! Killed two so far in this pit.
Finally, I installed another drowning trap; different design this time.
Obligatory drop collection system.
Now that all 10 traps have been completed, all I have left to do for Stage 4 is farm some gunpowder for TNT. Believe I need 6 more blocks and then I'll be on to Stage 5!
Intruder kill count for the sake of completion:
45 Creepers
47 Skeletons
37 Zombies
39 Spiders
7 Slimes (counting the two massive ones as single creatures)
2 Endermen
1 Spider Jockey
I've been considering about what I'm going to do once I complete the Kobold Challenge and I think I'll try my luck at the Murlock Challenge. Not sure if I'll create a whole new world or whether I'll just stash all my stuff in the kobold city, suicide, and then run far-far away to start fresh. I've found a couple beaches that I think would be good starting places. A bit less random doing it that way than creating a number of new worlds trying to find an appropriate starting place for the water requirements. Eh, I'll ponder it further and get back to y'all.
I found this challenge, saw elf race, decided to try it (Im a fan of elves)
So... I'm kind of a noob at building and i kinda got a little bored after stage 1, but I got bored again and decided to continue playing it. (also if you can tell me how to make spoilers so my post isnt so long, please tell me )
I have a few snapshots I just took:
My Treehouses:
Literally the smallest Abandoned Mineshaft EVER: (I tore up the ground under the chest for iron)
@CIVDCCD - nice screenshots so far. Will be interesting building in the jungle. Normally, I hate using logs as a building material since planks are so much more efficient, but in the jungle I'm betting you have a massive surplus of wood so it should work out fine.
@Sheena - lighting isn't really an issue for me, since I sort of want mobs spawning nearby so I can enjoy the fruits of my trap-building labors. I'm sure a few more jack-o'-lanterns spread around and maybe an outer wall/fence would keep out most of the mobs you're having trouble with. It's a hobbit gated community!
As for me, think I'll do a really brief Kobold Update!
All the gunpowder has been farmed and the TNT blocks crafted. Stage Four is complete!
Thought I'd also take a moment to showcase the observation/defense tower I mentioned last time. It's nothing fancy, but I like to call it part of home.
View of a sunrise from the top.
Now, onto Stage 5. Got most of the necessary items & blocks already; cobble logs, iron armor, & diamonds.
The kill count requirement for Stage 5 is tiny compared to the amount of creepers I'll have to kill to farm the remaining 31 blocks of TNT. Nevertheless, I've gone out and slaughtered a few intruders for the sake of completion. Now that I've got my 10 kills I'll probably suspend with keeping track, since there's going to be a LOT of killing in this stage in order to essentially double my TNT stockpile.

Update:
- Added stage 6 to Orcs
- Added the "Challenge Development" Just a quick note about what's to come.
- Edit all Orc stages to be a bit "easier", more of a slow incline of required items, and more possible.
So, a buddy came over today and we were tinkering a bit with mods, since I've never really used any. Got a couple fun, mostly aesthetic, mods that I'll be running that I think will enhance the challenge a bit. Screenshots in the next update, prolly.
@Sheena - I thought about dragging some villagers over to my kobold city...but I'd have to locate some in the world first. Also, no idea how that would work out with the city being underground...maybe not well. Also, if they ever managed to get out I imagine they'd all die in the first day from all the traps I have laying around. lol

Man, everyone else is zooming their challenges... And it all looks good too!
Me:
- Human Challenge 1: Still in grindy build mode on Stage 3. While touring the castle to show a friend's son the build so far, I ran into a creeper that spawned in there on me. :-( Thankfully he only damaged the floor and took out a few bricks and torches. Nothing that set me back greatly. Just annoyed the frick out of me. I think I want to find a mod that'll show me the areas that mobs can spawn...
- Human Challenge 2: Still on Stage 1. Cutting a hill down to sea level is a long tedious task. I have hired Creeper Excavation Services to help lower the ground level faster. Even then, not enough spawn at any one time. Did find an iron shovel on a zombie at one point. After much debate, I determined that yes, it was within rules to use that. 9 more levels of blocks before I can start working on the village proper. I'm also building a watchtower on a nearby hill. Because it will look cool.
- Elf Challenge: Working on Stage 2. Up to three houses built. Need to go acquire more sheeps for more wool to make beds for the new houses. Getting more sprawlish.
- Dwarf Challenge: Have not continued since finishing Stage 1.
@Aelis - You don't really need a mod. Mobs can spawn anywhere with a brightness level (bl) lower than 7. You can find the bl of a given square by hitting F3. Just wandering around an area and keeping an eye on the rating should tell you where you need more light.
Also, I've had 3 bows with the Power I enchantment on them drop from skeletons and by golly I'm using them so I don't really see a problem with your use of an iron shovel.
I think, the rulestatement says... you can use what you find, regardless of techlevel. Though crafting stuff above your techlevel is a no.
On the other hand, you can bend the rules to make it more fun for yourself and there is nothing worse then being lucky and scavenging diamond tools from a village and not able to use them because they are handled the same as your stonetools but higher techlevel. A shovel is a shovel, regardless of material but do you know how to craft one yourself?
A shovel is one thing, and apple trees are another...but the real question is, given I'm on Stage 5 now and I have all the materials, can I craft and use the portal gun I installed the mod for earlier today.
Screen shots are from my other, non-kobold, game
Messing around in town harassing chickens.
Portal from one of my bases, in the NPC village...
...to my other in a massive, glass & lava prism outside of town.
Suppose I may as well do a quick Kobold Update while I'm at it.
Stage 5 is well under way. Got the last two huts constructed. Kobolds don't have much personal space, apparently. lol
Planning room complete & updated for the new residents.
One of the mods I talked about in my second-to-last post - the armor stand mod! Now I can show what the armor sets I made actually look like when worn...without having to mess about with F5!
And the Shelf mod is a great way to display all the tools and stacks of things required by the challenge. All stacks complete except for TNT.
For shiggles, here's a shot of a zombie trapped by my lava-door contraption.
Left to do:
Construct 16 more traps
Build a shrine
Gather 8 more apples
Gunpowder, gunpowder, gunpowder...
Oh yeah your on the last stage too... For some reason I thought you had and extra stage XD maybe we can add in a section that shows who has finished the challenge That's be cool
