I've only done something like that once, I moved into a village house since I'm more of a gatherer than a builder, it was alright. I ended up killing all the natives and having to import new ones from a neighboring village though. o.0 But mostly I just spawn in, and look for a nearby spot/biome that looks ideal for what I have in mind.
I just raid the generated structures for their loot . For where I put my house, it starts in a cave, then moves to the surface when I have enough wood and stuff.
I never live in an above ground house, because I can't build a good looking roof, so I just build into the sides of mountains and hills, they usually end up like hobbit holes.
I both build my own, and stay in places. I have multiple houses, so if i need food or shelter, I can just go to the nearest one. My main house, though, is a really nice place in the mountains.
I have a bed, and stocked chest in every villages, so that I have supplies if i want to trade, or refill my inventory.
First when i start a game, i try move into one of the village houses close by, and then after i got all i needed i moved out and destroyed most of it to create my mansion at a good spot. I just raid all the places for their stuff, spend a few nights then use up most of their resources and leave.
or a witch's hut in the swamps (If it has one generated) I can build off of that once i get rid of the witch, and then use it as my starter house. Not really a builder. My house usually ends up being in the side of a mountain.

If I make another move there'll be no more turning back~
In the first few SSP games, I built a home in the side of a hill or mountain and mined for ore. In the first SMP game, I built a castle on a large hill. In the latest and longest SMP, we built 8 block high and 3 block thick walls (with a passage way in the middle) around a village on a lagoon. The walls are crenelated with machicolations to keep out spiders and to have something to stand behind to shoot arrows. There are six towers and two barbicans, one protecting the redstone drawbridge over the lagoon and the other protecting the redstone gate to the desert. There are two postern doors and two horse only gates as well. I have expanded the village and have a villager curing station to lure in villager zombies for curing. I have cured well over a dozen zombies. Seven Iron golems have spawned and I'm debating on the plans for a cathedral for the town. Mobs can not get into the town and villagers can not get out. Each of the four main players has a home in the village. There are two quarries (one to bedrock) and three fortified outposts near important resources.
I don't try this at all, building in generated structures. I seem to get attacked by a horde of zombies every time I try. So that means I have to defend the villagers, but then of course, the villagers open the door at first light, and that's long before zombies start to burn, so they get attacked and die, and a few turn into zombies themselves. Horrible, so I'm fighting my way out of the village until zombies burn, including the poor zombie villagers.

In my current single player map (doing a journal of it here in the survival forums, check it out if you'd like) I'm putting my base in the middle of an ocean. the spot I picked happened to be literally right above a small mineshaft. I haven't had a chance to explore it much, but since it's there I'll be incorporating it into my overall base.
I'm not necessarily using it as a house, but it'll eventually be part of it.

When the villagers go inside for the night, put blocks in front of the doors. Then you can put up a wall or fencing around the village. Once you have the village isolated from the mobs, then remove the blocks.
I always build my own houses, I think all of the generated structures in Minecraft are extremely ugly. I also think that they made them that way because it would make people want to get their own resources and build their own house instead of doing something un-challenging and taking over a villager hut etc.
No, I always build my main base near spawn. That means compasses are actually useful! If I'm exploring a new place and there is a village nearby I will sometimes comandeer one of the houses to use as a temporary base, but I enjoy actually building my own structures.
I've built a house in a village and lived in a village before, but only a couple times. I usually find a nice open space to build my structures. Sometimes I end up building a village outside my base and populating it with villagers the legit way. Either way, I like villagers.

Forums avatar from the Chroma Hills resource pack:
After stealing from the town's Smith and killing him, I take the house itself too. Because of the lava source near the Smith's house, I have no problem in finding fuel source for my furnace. I once tried building a house in the end in creative mode but ending up being killed by an enderman after changing it back to survival.
