So earlier today I was hunting wither skeletons at my nether fortress, and picking up some gold nuggets while in the process. While fighting a group of angry pigmen, I saw this guy in the mix:
Sorry the pics are so dark; I keep the fortress dark to spawn more withers, and I play with brightness on "moody" (all the way down) to keep it scary in darkened caves and such, like it rightfully should be. But, that's weird, right? The nearest portal is hundreds of blocks away, and I had been there for quite some time already, anyway, killing everything in sight, so there's no chance he just wandered in from the overworld. It seemed like he just "showed up" in the middle of the pack while my back was turned, like I somehow triggered the zombie "reinforcement" mechanic. Is this supposed to happen? I didn't think pigmen were supposed to spawn reinforcements like the regular zombies do, and even if they did, wouldn't they spawn pigman reinforcements instead of zombies? Is this some feature I didn't know about (1.6.4, by the way), or just a random glitch?
I've experienced something similar in the past, but with a Skeleton. I just figured it was a bug with Wither Skeleton spawning, seeing as using a Skeleton egg in a Nether Fortress makes a Wither Skeleton.
It might just be a spawning glitch.

Skeletons have a chance of spawning in the nether fortress instead of a wither skele
@Crawfish: Wither skeletons are simply skeletons spawned in the Nether. When they're spawned in the Nether, there's a high chance they'll spawn as wither skeletons. However, they may also spawn as regular skeletons.

95% of teens would scream if Justin Beiber was about to jump of the top of the Empire State Building. If you are in the 5% that would grab a seat and some popcorn and yell JUMP! JUMP! JUMP! post this into your sig.
Interesting! Maybe he followed you into the Nether, got lost, and took a while to find a path to you.
Yeah, I had thought of that as well, but I don't think that's what happened. While it isn't impossible, I think it might as well be. For starters, how would he just "show up" in the middle of a pack of pigmen, when just a few seconds before he was nowhere to be seen. Zombies aren't that fast, and there's only one way in or out of the fortress; if he had just wandered in from outside, I would have seen him coming.

That's supposed to happen with skeletons, but not, to my knowledge, with zombies/pigmen.

This is because zombie pigman and zombie share some code.
When you punching a pigman there is chance it will use zombie's reinforcement code.
That seems the most likely explanation. It was my best guess, too, but I could not be certain. Is this intended behavior, do you think, or simply an oversight? Think I should report it as a bug?

It's not like it's something as inconvenient as a creeper, but if it is a bug, it could mess up other stuff in the game.
Mojang already have a lot of bugs to deal with (or so I'm told), so I'd wouldn't report it.

Most likely bug, I think only Zombie can havng reinforcement ability.Pigman spawning zombie is quite weird...

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
It might just be a spawning glitch.

Nothing to see here~
