I am in a huge dilemma right now: Lost in a cave, tons of gear and diamonds on me, 1 heart, and tons of monsters all around me. I paused the game at this moment to decide weather I can use the 1/2 second of life I have left to turn my difficulty to peaceful for a moment, but i honestly think it might be cheating. HELP D:
I would say yes, it's cheating, but presuming it's just a single-player world of yours, the only person you are cheating is yourself. Would you derive more fun and enjoyment from "playing legit," or from "not dying and losing all your stuff"?
I really agree with IronMagus, when you cheat, you are not cheating anyone, but your cheating on yourself. I recommend you play by the rule and die. You can always mine more, rather if you cheated, it kind of ruins the whole process of mining and surviving.
Depends on which will annoy you more. Though, if you're playing Survival Mode on easy or harder on purpose, then... You kind of got yourself into that situation. Might be less annoying to just write down your current coordinates and make your way back there as quick as you can within 5 minutes. Though, some might argue that that's cheating also.
If you would feel so put off from playing that you'd not continue that world after dying, but are okay with the fact that you didn't (properly) survive of your own accord, go for it.
I'd consider it cheating as well, but again, you're only cheating yourself. There is a better solution though... Make a chest and store your find until you can safely get it out of there.
What you're really cheating yourself though is the feeling of accomplishment if you do make it out of there alive.
I will also tell you that if you cheat, you'll always remember that you cheated to get those goodies home, and you will eventually restart your game because that world will feel tainted to you.
Considering that you can still die (falls, lava, drowning, suffocation), I wouldn't put in in the same category as having cheats on and going into creative (something that I've seen certain YouTubers do a lot). On the other hand, the OP's situation is more like cheating because they are in imminent danger of dying, as opposed to switching to Peaceful with full health so mobs don't bother you. Actually, I am currently on Peaceful because I'm exploring this gigantic cave system that resembles a stone sponge, with lava frequently seen 50 blocks down and far more air than stone (only while I'm exploring the center though). On the other hand, that means I don't get as much XP, which I need to repair stuff (I repair my pickaxe many times for each sword/armor repair, on Normal difficulty). So in that way Peaceful brings some disadvantages.
Of course, some of the mods I use can also be seen as cheating, like Rei's Minimap (death points), but still not in the category of having cheats or keep inventory on (also my own fault I found myself in the "sponge" cave described above because I messed around with the code to produce it; yeah, I actually overwhelmed myself, one who normally goes through cave systems like there's no tomorrow, and will nerf the maximum density in the next version).
It's your decision to make. I guess I would consider it cheating but it's your decision. You will probably have a chance of surviving, but turning it to peaceful might be considered being a bit of a, you know, puss.
He explicitly said he was about to die, so the chest idea isn't an option.
Anyway, if you've always had a no-peaceful rule, consider whether you would prefer feeling guilty over breaking it, or raging over the fact that you've lost hours of work.
Perhaps, just switch to peaceful for literally a second, so the mobs all disappear, then continue on in your original difficulty.
Because it's consider as cheating, ill advise to dig a 2x2 hole under you and hide until morning, turn your render distance to tiny so mobs close to you despawn .

I still maintain it, yes. Mainly just the listing though. GrygrFlzr does all of the design and code behind the scenes. However, that's not really relevant to this thread. If you need to ask or say anything in regards to that, please PM me or post it here please.

I used to maintain the Minecraft Forums Mod List. However, life has stepped in the way of that. Perhaps later...

I agree, it depends on what rules you put on yourself while playing minecraft. Personally i don't consider it cheating, my minecraft is about fun and i dont like dying and going back to get all my stuff in the middle of monsters who will probably just kill me again.
So when i am about to die or that i died and need to go get my stuff back i turn my world on to peaceful and then when i am back to a safe place then i turn it back on normal with a lesson learned.
It's not cheating in my opinion its only avoiding ruining my fun and thats different for everybody.
If it bothers you enough to ask the question here, I think it will bother you later if you turn to peaceful now. I have maps that I have ruined for myself by using amidst to scout the general features, afterwards they just do not feel as satisfying.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

Why don't you store all your goodies in a chest in a safe room down in the mine and write the coordinates, so you don't lose the stuff!
(basically what VCthederp said)

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

Are you still the owner of McfModlist?
