As you can see from the video it became substantially larger by the end. Apartments for 40 people, the highest the population ever got was 22 (server shutdown) but we'll be starting over when 1.7 hits, because of the deep ocean biome.
This is amazing. I love the tone of your video-it's very awe-inspiring. One thing though-you mention starting a new colony in a deep ocean biome once 1.7 comes out. It seems like the deep oceans will have gravel instead of sand, however. Won't that make it hard to make the glass for the domes?

That's what satellite stations are for. These are smaller specialized habitats nearby the main colony for things like sand harvesting, squid farming, and explosives testing. Travel between them will be achieved by boat until subs are added.
Here's a top and side view schematic of the standard satellite station I usually build. It has just what it needs to support three workers. The book cases represent beds since the editor didn't have those. I used stone even where glass would be because glass is basically invisible in this editor, looks identical to air. You get the idea though.
This looks amazing, it's making me want to try to build one of my own!
And with the mods SimUKraft, Millenaire, and Minecraft Comes ALive installed, I see so many new possibilities.
What do you think about the new oceans in those new snapshot biomes ?
I've heard that they can be 20 blocks deeper than current oceans about 40 deep, however the sea floor will be made of just 1 material...
If you scroll up a bit, there's a schematic of dedicated sand mining stations that go in the normal ocean biome. Some colonists work there gathering sand and smelting it into glass, then fill their inventory with it and transfer it to the colony. When the sand in that area is depleted the base is abandoned or dismantled and a new one is built elsewhere.
You seem very sure that subs will be added. Is there any evidence for this, or is it just wishful thinking?
That was not my intended meaning although I can see how you got that from it. "Travel between them will be achieved by boat until subs are added, if they are added" is kind of an ungainly sentence.

Oh, gotcha. I noticed that in your New Pacifica City post you mentioned travel via minecart. Did you give up on that idea in general, or just for the sand mining stations because they're meant to be temporary? Or is there a different reason why you'll be using boats rather than minecarts here?

The hallways in Nereus were wide enough to use horses. But it never grew so large that we needed to. The whole structure was comfortably walkable. I have built a colony with an integrated rail system before, twice. It's difficult to do that in a way where pedestrians can share the corridor with the tracks and not have it be awkward. In subsequent builds I just wound up separating the rail line from the rest of the colony and only using rail where really large distances needed covering:

How would you have gotten the horses down there?
A temporary vertical tube to the surface, same way we got the cows/sheep/pigs down to it.
