I play on a private whitelisted server with some of my freinds and we were thinking about building an iron golem farm. So we searched and searched and we found one we like. But I wondered if anybody have a design they liked?
That one is the farm I have. It's extremely time-consuming to build, but uses few resources and produces a very good rate.
However, since it was created before hoppers, the grinder is out of date. I've made my own grinder, and it's much easier. (I also only use two stacked villages, rather than four total.)
I fully suggest the . The video he posted is incredibly informative and also easy to follow. I have one in my survival world, already at a double chest of iron blocks at the moment. I believe the average output is ~1300 iron per hour. Sure, it doesn't look the best, but you can always cover it inside a structure, as long as you keep several blocks exposed to the sky. Here's mine:
It's true you need a bunch of materials to create it, but it's totally worth it in the end. Make sure to watch the video thoroughly, as even a missing redstone dust can completely destroy the farm's mechanisms. Another thing, I'd recommend building the farm in your spawn chunks (a 12 x 12 chunk area centered on your spawn). This means the iron farm will always be loaded, and is always running no matter where you are.
Docm's farm is what I would call the "standard" model. The "Iron Trench" is way overkill unless you want to build huge structures out of iron blocks, but if that sounds like your kind of thing, then it's the one for you. A good third option would be MegaTrain's MegaVillage. It serves as both NPC trading village and iron golem farm. If you wanted more than a single farm's worth of output, you could built a multi-unit farm, docm-style, and simply replace one (or more) of the units with a MegaVillage instead.

Hmm, thanks for that. I didn't know there was a farm like that. That should help with my worlds as well

I used the DocM version.. I had a good look at the IronTrench as well and decided I would probably never build it simply as it relies on a lot of things to work just right IMO which means it's highly likely it will break in a future update...
I use one similar to the docm tutorial but I just have the minimum villagers with a double layer spawning platform with a hopper and chest.
It produces far more iron than I need.
Along with charcoal and villager trading the only time I need to go mining is for redstone and gold.
I built 1 level of DocM's iron golem farm and when I go to sleep IRL I go AFK and wake up to around 3 stacks of iron. Pretty cool I built it out of cobble I had lying around. I would suggest that one because it is really easy to make and produces a good amount of iron. I
Can you build DocM's farm with more floors? He shows 2 towers of 2 floors each, but could you build each of those towers with 3 or 4 floors? Or do the villages need more space between them than is available with the height limit?

Every time you post a question without first consulting the wiki, I die a little inside.

You can probably make more towers/floors, as long as they are following the village distance rules.

You need at minimum of something like 64 blocks space between villages.. The DocM farm places them 70 blocks apart vertically and 64 or 65 horizontally I think. More is safer.. As for more floors in each village, iron golems spawn within a 16x16 area centered on the village center but only within 6 vertical blocks.. So you really can't fit more than 2 floors in one village.

Assuming the golems are in a 2x2 tube,
[wall] [lava] [lava] [wall]
[wall] [sign] [sign] [wall]
[wall] [nothing] [nothing] [wall]
[wall] [hopper] [hopper] [wall]
If Iron Golems fall into this, they will die, and the hoppers will collect the drops (and redirect them to wherever you choose).
