You do understand that is using the new lead item in 1.6? And that any animal can do the exact same thing? A pig was just the animal they chose. You could use a villager.
Pigs are the best food. They are easy to farm and you don't need leather after you go mining for the first time.
You can ride pigs and its a fun way to travel.
How do you know they are the "best food"? That statement is false.
"Easy to farm". They aren't any easier than farming chickens or cows.
Everyone and their mothers mother will be riding horses. Cool kids will be riding pigs cause no horse can be a porkchop exress eva. Also I think pigs will be more abundant then horses since they are in more then one biom. Another interesting thing is care of pigs vs. horses. Horses need haybails to breed? Pigs just need carrots.
Honestly, pigs are a bit lacking, but not especially so given they can be ridden, are relatively easily bred, and produce one of the best food items in the game. You want a mob that is useless? Sheep. You only need one if you're willing to wait, and they drop nothing but wool despite there being a vast tradition of sheep being delicious animals.
Pigs used to be the only mobs that dropped food. Now, cows and chickens also drop food, as well as useful materials. Currently, pigs are really only useful for transportation, and they are quickly being overtaken by horses in that respect. In short, pigs were once the most useful mob, but are now the third least useful mob in the game (just ahead of squids and bats).
Hmmm, I had thought that Pigs should have been able to drop Leather. Afterall you can still tan and boil pigskin, but that would make Leather far too common I think.
So I thought about what else we get from pigs besides food... and well... The only thing I can think of is Manure.
Since the recent Bonemeal nerf, having another source to supplement farms, crops and tree nursery's would be very welcome I think.
How the mechanic would work? Not sure. Either feed em something, or they just randomly plop it around the area... That's the kind of thing that would need actual testing than suggestion to balance out.

That's not exactly a new mechanic, chickens drop eggs.

I hate those dragon cave signatures, but my link clicking compulsion makes me click them anyway.
I also hate when people stick half a million spoilers in each other, but my spoiler clicking compulsion makes me click them anyway.
You can get that from any animal. The point is that the pigs only drop food which again, can come from any animal.
exactly. The pork chops need to be buffed in some way. They could give five hunger points or increase the saturation so you don't need to eat as often.

I agree. It should give five hunger points. They should also drop something like...Bacon. Raw Bacon. Or maybe Pig Legs.

Heres a picture of a Mew. Its big, and blue. DEAL WITH IT.
Here's 2 ideas, one of them I know has been suggested before. If you combine a fishing rod and a red mushroom you get a mushroom on a stick. When you hold it out when riding a pig it will start heading toward the closest Mushroom biome. Another is, if you feed a pig a Golden Carrot, it will become tamed and follow you around. You can't ride a tamed pig, but you can put a helmet on it and it will battle hostile mobs like a wolf, charging them and dealing knockback. The knockback would be higher depending on the helmet worn, plus the helmet would give them protection.

Yeah, pigs are plain boring. My reasons are these:
They drop food which is about the same as food given by chickens, or cows.
Next, you need carrots to breed them, and they can only be found in villages, so if there isn't any near, well, sorry...
And last, they give? Pork. Point. Nothing else. I think FitterSpace is right, bacon would be cool. Maybe Zombie Pigmen should give it too?
Zombies actually drop carrots as a rare drop, but as the name implies, it's pretty rare. Someone earlier also said that once you get a carrot farm, breeding pigs is easy. I disagree because you still have to get the carrots in the first place. By the time i get my first carrot, i already have a full cow and chicken farm.
Agree. Besides riding them and using them as a food source when there are otherwise cows, pigs are pretty useless.
I also agree with your idea of them dropping extra food; this would make them a bigger target when a player is, say, starving and need an immediate food source.
Maybe the pig should also drop oil. It's just an idea, but you know how oil sometimes comes from animal fat? Maybe the pig can drop oil, and candles can be crafted from it and wax. Or use the oil as a slippery substance to make grease to fuel some kind of new weapon?
I don't know. Again, just an idea. Better to type it and post it here than let it be forgotten in two seconds.
Who cares lol its still funny

Please, Mojang, give the pigs some love.

True, I honestly didn't think of that.
dat moment when you fix 1 programming error and get 99 more
