So recently, I tried making a fireplace in my wooden house, and nearly burned the whole house down. I kept revising and expanding the design, trying to make it safe, and I seem to have found one that works (after burning that part of my house multiple times) Could anyone who knows how fire spreads (I don't) look at the attached screenshot and tell me if this is safe, or if my house will burn down as soon as I turn my back. Texture pack is ravand's realistic 16x16 by the way.

Having returned home more than once to find part of the house missing (once because of a fireplace and once because of a lava "garbage disposal" in a wall) I learned that the Wiki has the reliable answer on this...
As far as time goes it is one of those "chance" things built into the game, it checks by rolling the dice so to speak at periodic intervals to see whether the fire will spread or not. At least that is what they say it does...personally I just think it waits to make sure your not home before starting the fire! j/k

Haha well I went mining for almost an hour (real time), and suddenly realized I had accidentally left my fire burning. I ran back and the house was fine, so I seem to have found a safe design I can't imagine it taking more than an hour to start spreading.
