I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's because of limitations in Java which don't allow more than 64. But, spawned or inventory-edited items can be in stacks well over the thousands, so I'm not positive. 'Course, it could just be a number Notch stuck with.
As a product of 8 x 8, it is the expression of a realized totality and perfect.
According to R. Allendy, this number represents the "static realization - even number - of the cosmic unit - 6 + 4 = 10 - in the blooming of the beatitude. It is the final liberation which allows to the being to realize its full individuality after its cycle 4, in the links of the cosmic Karma, 60". It would represent also the natural forces acting in union with the providential determinations of the Cosmos.
Being the cube of 4, the number 64 represents the physical world of the four elements to the third power, in the plenitude of its expansion.
According to Claude of Saint-Martin, this number represents the "complement of the octagonal circle where the powerful number, after having covered all the depths of area and of the existence of the beings, restore the unit in its simple number, there where it was divided, and the action where reigned the nothingness and the death".
Symbol of the paramount chaos.
It is the number of generations from Adam until Jesus according to the Gospel of Luke.
The mother of Buddha had, according to the tradition, to born in a family endowed of 64 species of qualities.
Age of the Virgin Mary when she died, according to visions of Ann-Catherine Emmerich.
The mathematician W. R. Ball reports the following legend: In a temple of Benares, there is a dome under which a plate of bronze marks the center of the world. On this plate, there are three vertical stems of one cubit height. During the creation of the world, God placed on one of the stems 64 discs of gold of different sizes, the largest at the basis, the others going decreasing. In top, the smallest disc. This accumulation is the tower of Brahma. Night and day, without stop, the priests relay to transfer the discs from a stem to another. Only one disc must be take at once and it is forbidden to place a disc on another of lower diameter. When the 64 discs will be transferred from the tower of Braham to an other stem, the temple and the Universe will crumble. This will be the end of the world.

Nope. The max stack used to be 99. Also, the max in editors is 255.
I think it's because 64 is just a good number. 16x4, one higher than 63, not too big, not to small, perfect!
I hope they don't change it.
My theory is 2. 2+2=4, 4+4=8, 8+8=16, 16+16=32, 32+32=64. 16 raw wood gives you 64. Multiply it by the 16 wood and 4 wooden planks. Alot of the things are even. This is just my theory :biggrin.gif:

I think it has more to do with the math behind it than anything else. Not so much the programming math as many things in programming are 0-255 (256, which is a multiple of 64), but more the fact that everything works better when they are all divisible by the same number. It could have just as easily been in 5's but as everything is eventually broken down to binary anyways doing it like this is just easier.

Tying into that binary thing, programmers seem to like using powers of two wherever they can, probably for simplicity and better data storage. Like how chunks are 16x16x256, the textures are 16x16 for each block, etc. I've even noticed in many other games where 512x512 is a common texture size. Not being a programmer for this project, though, I couldn't tell you the exact reason.

Don't like the terrain? Go build your own. You can totally do that in this game.
It's because Minecraft is somewhat retro style. All of the geometry is made out of simple cubes, the textures are very low quality and unfiltered, and the text is blocky.
The number 64 is a multiple of 2/8/16/32. In computers, numbers follow this format.
Early "8-bit" games were limited by the number 256. You could only have 256 colors, 256 possible values to a variable, etc.
Very early computers used 6-bit variables to store text. This gives a maximum value of 64.
Therefor, it gives the impression that each item stack is stored in a 6-bit number (in reality it is probably 32-bit number that can go up to 4.2 million).

It's because computers can only "think" in binary, and binary is limited to powers of 2. You cannot build a memory system that is limited by an arbitrary number like 1000.
Also, in terms of the GUI, 64 is the largest binary number that can be represented in 2 digits, which makes things somewhat easier to program for the display. Not the whole reason, but you add up all the things about 64 that make it convenient for the game, and it starts to make more sense.

Current Let's Play Series: "The Long Road" (Vanilla Minecraft in 1.8 snapshots), "Life in the Woods" (Modded 1.6.4), "Kerbal Speed Program" (Vanilla KSP with chipmunk voice commentary).
If you look at it from a binary point of view,
64 is equal to:
128/64/32/16/8/4/2/1
0/1/0/0/0/0/0/0
So a stack is basically 1 million bytes of data. - unconfirmed (lol :tongue.gif: )
Its just binary.. 64 is one of the components just like 1 kilobyte is not 1000 bytes, but 1024 bytes and 1megabyte is not 1000000 bytes, but if you go periodically then 1megabyte = 1048576 bytes. (or bits)
And that my child, brings us to why 42 is the answer to everything. DISCUSS.

That, or they have a ridiculously extensive knowledge of random numbers.
Wow. That's deep. But i'm sure Notch has his reasons and that they are (probably) not as complicated as that.
Also, Im pretty sure it was this. Being the cube of 4, the number 64.
