Is there any way to make a low (or no) light mushroom farm that mobs won't spawn in? I want to build one that has the fastest growth rate possible but I haven't been able to find any info yet on how to make it free of mobs.
Only way to do that is to find a mushroom biome, they are rare and usually in the middle of oceans, if you find one, make a track to it
The reason it's only possible With that is because they don't spawn mobs except for mooshrooms
I've thought up a way but I am not sure if it will work.

Basically, is a piston that is facing downward containing water. is a halfslab (Mobs cant spawn on halfslabs). Thats all basically, all you have to do is is plant one mushroom at the end and wait until it grows up the whole row. Hit the lever that is connected to the piston and it will harvest all the mushrooms for you.

hmmm.. not sure what you were showing there... But maybe putting half slabs above the growing pads would work so there's not enough height for the mobs to spawn. Assuming of course the mushrooms would still spread. I have a feeling that this is something that will need a bunch of testing.
Not sure this is a good idea.. but I just thought of it off the top of my head... maybe have it so a torch is a bit of a distance away from the mushroom, they can still be planted in a medium light level
Make sure that the light level is adjusted just about right. Mushrooms can grow at light levels below 13 and mobs spawn in light levels below 7. To check on the light level, press F3 or SHIFT F3 to see the light level on the top left corner. Place lights in area where requirements of light are met. Torch recommended as it has light level 14. (redstone torch not recommended as light level 7 is not able to support an area two blocks away from torch to stop mob spawn) Other tactics include making it automatic where you can keep mobs out and make the growth speed fast as able to keep very dark. Stop spawn of zombies, skeletons, and creeper by making area 1 block tall. (spider will still spawn)
Still testing things out.. Waiting for mushrooms to grow is painful when you want to test things... You can grow mushrooms on leaves and mobs won't spawn on them so that's what I'm currently testing...
They only relevant use for mushrooms in survival is soup. If you can get a mooshroom back to your base. It's hard but soooooo worth it. You can right click them with a wooden bowl and it fills the bowl with mushroom soup. Just one mooshroom confined in an easy place where you can collect the soup.
Mobs will not spawn if there are not two free blocks above them or on top of a slab. So you can put a slab walkway for you to pass through and have the mushrooms growing on the sides in like cubby like things of just one block. Here is my best at illustrating at what I'm getting at.
B = block
S= slab
M= Mushroom
B S B M M B B B S B B B B
So you have space to walk through on the slab and still see the mushrooms easily. idk. Also mobs won't spawn on top of glass, so instead of slabs on top of regular blocks you can put glass at the parts where you walk.

NOTE: Creatures spawn on leaves if you use "Fast rendering"... Not sure about "Fancy graphics", where leaves are transparent. But in fast rendering, leaves are solid-blocks, and will spawn critters and creatures.
Also note: I have mushrooms growing in full light, on leaves, in the trees... (Not sure if it is just a game-glitch, but it is persistent.)
You can make 2x100 hallway with a glass-roof, two blocks tall... Place signs on the whole top left/right walls... That should stop creatures from spawning inside...
Try this pattern if spiders do form...

I don't think that's true, JD_Mortal. At least, I use fast rendering, and I have never, ever seen a hostile mob up a tree.
It's not exactly a farm, but if you have some bonemeal then a simple darkroom will do. Make it just a little bit bigger than the giant mushrooms themselves, stick a dirt block in the middle, and light the floor with redstone lamps connected to a lever. Make your entrance at the top via a ladder or use some kind of door so that light from outside doesn't penetrate. Then when you're ready to grow your mushroom, switch the lights off, get out your bonemeal, and go to town. In five minutes you can have more mushrooms than you'll use in a month, and since the room's so small, no mobs while you're in there with the lights off.
Edit -- or, you could make your mushroom farm in the nether. Light level is always zero there unless you add your own lighting, which you wouldn't.
Hostile spawn: under light level 7, the lower the higher chance.
I make mushroom farms that are 2 blocks wide and about 10~30 blocks long. Place torches on every available wall, but 6 blocks from the ground. This will make a farm that will have light level 9 on the mushroom planted ground.

2. Kill the mobs manually.
3. Mushroom farm is only one block high. (Can spiders spawn there?)
"Green Button" in Latin means cake.
Edit:
This one uses giant mushrooms, so do it underground. It can still be well lit.

I had a look but none of the ones I found are for low light.. i.e. light of 5 or less for fastest growth.

Yes, I am aware that it's nice to do at light level 8 but I want to be a bit safer.....
