I'm having this problem in my new world with nether portals. The problem is that when i enter the portal and return to the overworld, i end up in a cave close-by to my house (but its annoyance having to walk back). I tried moving my portal three times and made sure there were no obstructions in the way of the portal. So why is this happening? is it something to do with the seed generation algorithm? i really want to know whats causing it so i can fix it because i like the nether a lot and theres a nether fortress outside the portal in the nether. a straight answer to whats causing this will help a lot

Get the coordinates of the portal in the Overworld, then go to the Nether and build a portal at those same coordinates.
Portals aren't directly linked to one another. Rather, when you travel from one dimension to the other, the game calculates your entry point based on the location of the portal you entered and the 1:8 difference in scale between the two worlds. It then scans the area around your entry point for any active portals and if it finds any within 128 blocks, teleports you to the nearest one. If there are no active portals within this range, a new one is created at your entry point.
But sometimes the entry point is encased in rock, or floating in midair above a lava sea or whatever. If these exact coordinates are not suitable for a portal, then a nearby location is selected which is.
Then, when you go back through this portal, the same thing is done in reverse. But since this portal isn't exactly where it was supposed to be, and since small variations in position inside the nether equate to eight times that distance in the overworld, your new entry point ends up being more than 128 blocks away from your original portal, so instead of teleporting you to an existing portal, the game just creates a new one at or near your new entry point.
Either of these two overworld portals will always take you to the same place in the nether, but entering the nether-side portal will only ever take you to the one overworld portal.
This is what's happening to you, I imagine. If you want a nether portal to link with your initial overworld portal, your best bet is to build it yourself in the proper location. Note the coordinates of your overworld portal, then divide the x and z coordinates by 8 (y stays the same) and build a portal in the nether at that exact location. You can probably fudge the y a little bit, but be precise with your x and z. If you relocate the nether-side portal in this fashion, then it should link up properly with your overworld portal every time, regardless of which "direction" you are traveling or of any other portals that may exist nearby. If it still doesn't work, try building it at the right y height, and/or destroy or deactivate any other nearby portals that might be interfering.

Don't do this. Not without dividing x and z by 8 first, anyway. Or you won't be anywhere near the right place, unless your portal's at (0,0).
So do i get the co-ordinates standing next to the portal or do i have to be standing in the portal?

I have been wondering these facts you stated in this post. Very useful information. Thanks!

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
So do i get the co-ordinates standing next to the portal or do i have to be standing in the portal?
yay it worked! thankyou so much for you!

I tried this. Doesn't work. -88, 33 nether so should be -11, 4.1. both overworld portals are well over -800, 150.
