like if in real life u were wearing leather armour you would get killed first hit
and chain armour. you have to craft it out of fire
whats fire got to do with chains ????
In my playstyle, leather armor is very easy to get. Basically, the first thing I do in the world is trap 2 cows and then go caving until I find a skeleton spawner and make an exp farm out of it. Then, I use those bones to get wheat and use the exp to enchant a looting 3 sword. Right now, I'm only crafting diamond boots (for feather falling) and the rest is leather armor.
You find skeleton spawners often enough to make a playstyle out of it...?
I rarely find dungeons, let alone skeleton dungeons...
Because books are useless, enchanting is useless, SMP PvP Camo is useless. Seems legit.
How is enchanting useless? With the right enchantments a diamond or even iron sword can kill another player in one hit.
Edit: On topic now, and all I have to say is I see tons of cows and can easily come by leather armor in 10 minutes or less. Breed a few slaughter the rest.
If armor had weight values where your hunger bar went down quicker based on what armor you were wearing, more people would be inclined to use leather.
Personally, I use leather when I want to challenge myself a bit. with Iron armor, I rarely die. And now that leather can be dyed, I feel like I can customize my character a bit more.
Leather armor has some very good uses. First and foremost, you can make a brutally effective cow farm with just some fences and wheat. Not only does this provide ample amounts of delicious steak but it also has the added benefit of having tons of leather!
Leather armor can be dyed. You may argue that this future is just for aesthetics but have you tried making your armor the color of the biome your in? We effectively have camouflage now and in a pvp server I can't count the number of times, I waited in a tree with green armor and snipes a group of other players scurrying around wondering where the heck i am!
If you're a builder then you tend to fall down a lot. It's just the nature of the job. You don't want to spend your iron armor's durability on something non pvp or pve related since that armor can be put to better use elsewhere. Leather armor is a good way to have some relatively cheap and easy to acquire protection as your building. My life was saved tons of times from wearing protective leather armor while building.
If you're in a pvp server and you are scouting for bases, or looking for vulnerabilities in a known base, your life expectancy is not very good. You don't necessarily want the enemy to kill you and take your fancy enchanted iron/diamond armor when you die. Leather armor can provide a quick easy and cheap protection that can help you escape death in a pinch, while still keeping your scouting mission at a relatively low stakes bid.
I don't really think that there is any item or block in minecraft that is totally useless. even something as common as sand and dirt has some practical uses on the field. I guess it just depends on how you play the game.
There's also multiplayer. Everyone who finds cows kill them the second they see them, and if they breed them some griefer will just kill them anyway. So I think zombies should drop leather. Like, their clothes.
Agreed 100%. I don't think I've ever even crafted Leather Armor on a 100% normal minecraft single player game of mine. Only on challenges and stuff where I can only use Leather Armor or when I spawn it to dye it.

If it has been suggested a lot, then maybe, just maybe, it should be implemented because obviously a lot of people want it.

1. That's mostly what I use it for. I hate to use up that fresh suit of iron armor on fall damage. I use that suit of leather to make sure I don't die. XP
2. Oh yeah, everything is useful for something. I wasn't saying it was completely useless, just... what's a good word... Obsolete? Inferior? Something like that. Completely useless? No. And I almost always bring gravel or sand with me in caves.
He's right. In real life, leather armor is specially treated to harden it. It's boiled and can be studded with metal. Surprisingly tough.

Seriously, it's about time leather stopped being useless. I mean, who DOESN'T want to walk around in pink armor?
FTW! I'm totally going to be stockpiling hundred's of different colors of leather armor! Heck I may make a storage room for that specific item. AND OVER 9000 COLORS?! Yea... more than that, but hey.
The "not enough cows" excuse is stupid. All you need is two cows and wheat and you have infinite cows. Here is my cow farm, started from just 2 cows:
Plus, leather is dyable in 1.4 which will be fun!
Or you can just dig down for about 10-15 minutes and get a full suit of iron armor, iron tools, and buckets. Gee, what am I going to do?
Time yourself between leather and iron.
Leather: 15-30 minutes to get a decent wheat field going. 5 minutes to catch and begin to breed 2 cows. Wait 5 minutes between breeding sessions. Finally get enough cows to slaughter them all and get full leather armor.
Iron: 10-20 minutes of digging. Tops. Unless you're massively unlucky. Plus 2-3 minutes of smelting.
Dyed armor is cosmetic. I don't quite understand the fuss.

i think they should remove both altogether

Maybe you should click this?
I cave like mad. Like, sometimes, I have over 3 stacks of iron blocks by the time I stop to actually build a house and stuff.
Step 2: Craft it all into armor.
Step 3: Dye it a multitude of colors.
Step 4: Toss it all in a zombie dungeon.

Check out the Fantasy City Build Challenge - it's pretty amazing!

Fall damage doesn't damage your armor.
