Can anyone tell me how many blocks away does my Nether portal have to be in order for me not to hear it? I want to know because I'm planning to put my portal in my mines at a certain layer and I don't want to hear the racket from my house.
If anyone knows the answer to this, please post below.
I would just disable my portal if I could but I don't want to go through all this trouble of hacking away at the obsidian every time I want it to turn off. Also, if anyone was wondering, water ladders do work if you press 'w' and 'd' at the same time when going up a water ladder.
How many blocks does my Nether Portal have to be for me to not hear the sound of it?
I would be really grateful if somebody who is a Minecraft expert would answer my question because I bet others are wondering about this too. And this information isn't on the Minecraft Wiki.
I found that if I'm about ten blocks away I can't hear it. Maybe less.
However the sound seems to carry over greater distances vertically. I have a room about 15-20 blocks directly below my portal and I can always hear it there.
My advice, just put it at the end of a hallway and make sure you don't build over or below it.
I don't know the exact number, but the placement of my current nether portal in my map, combined with my paths of movement around it. It'd estimate it in the 10-20 block range. Probably less than 20.
Sorry I can't be more specific. It's also hard to tell because it doesn't always start up until you get close to it. You'd have to kind of inch closer and closer, and then wait a bit for the sound to start up, to figure it exactly.

Well I wanted to know myself so I did some experiments, The sound can be heard for 16 blocks around the portal block.
i.e
P = Portal
S = Sound
NS = No Sound
NS S S S S S S S S S S S S S S S S P P S S S S S S S S S S S S S S S S NS
So in answer to your question, 17 Blocks away from a portal block, (bearing in mind the fact that there are 6 in a portal frame (2x3)) there is no sound.

You could constantly play a record in your jukebox...
Still, back to the original question. How many blocks away does the nether portal have to be in order for me not to hear it?

Also, any exact number would also be great if anyone can find out.
Thanks
