I decided to settle down in a nice grassland area. Tons of cows, chickens, sheep, and pigs all over the place.
Over time, though, the animal population dwindled, and now it seems like there's just one cow remaining in the whole place.
Could any of these things be the cause?
1. I've been skipping most nights by sleeping in a bed. Do animals only spawn at night along with the monsters?
2. There are a few natural caves around. Did all the animals just wander underground and get stuck there?
3. I have a hundred chickens in my basement. PETA would be upset if they saw the conditions.
animals no longer re-spawn they are now persistant. meaning you have to breed them to get more. and btw sheep should regrow wool and sadly the breeding hasnt been put in the 1.9 pre release yet but it will so dont worry n.n!
Animals only spawn once, when the chunk is newly generated. After that, passive mobs will not respawn, so if you kill them all, you won't really see any. What most likely happened in your case though is that all the passive mobs, since they're now persistent, fell in holes and caves and can not get out.
Some probably went underground (I've so far seen a chicken, a pig, and a cow that managed to get to redstone level!) and some probably slowly killed themselves off like they do if you trap them (just a lot slower)

Animals respawn, albeit very rarely. I've observed it directly. Any claim to the contrary is false and based on the assumption that "since I haven't seen it, it must not exist!"

How about the fact that you offer no proof to your claims, and that I do? Animals will never respawn in a normal game of survival, as the circumstances needed to reproduce animal spawning cannot be reproduced without manual intervention. Want proof? Check my signature.
Don't talk **** without backing your **** up. Thanks.

I've seen it happen several times on a 1.8.1 map. I really don't give a **** if you believe it or not. I'm sorry you're so terribly threatened by someone disagreeing with you that you feel the need to resort to personal attacks, but your insecurity and immaturity is not my problem.
How, exactly, would you suggest I prove it, anyway? Sit around in an empty field with a video program running until I luck out and catch a respawn on camera? No thanks.

Stop advertising your signature every animal post, animals DO rarely respawn, every once and a while ill have a cow or pig spawn near my house.
I had the same problem. I went in to a mine below my area and found pigs, sheep, etc all running around down there. They're falling in to the caves and mines and not coming out.

Video? Screenshot? Proof? None? Ok. Words mean nothing in a logical discussion when one side offers proof.

But yeah, the animal sppawning is a little messed up right now, we just have to wait for them to fix it.
Blah.
Animals spawn when a chunk is generated, and that's it. You can have all the chickens you want, it won't change a thing.

Breeding hasn't been implemented.

How ever my main island (which isnt very big but a good size none the less) seems to be limited to only having 2 sheep left on it.
Maybe if I leave sailing again and come back there would be a chance to repopulate some animals.
