Hi guys, I just got minecraft a week ago and have been starting to build my house on my friend's server. After listening to my friend's experience with his piston elevator and reading and watching many many piston tutorials/youtube videos I decided against building a piston elevator because they don't work reliably, yes, even the spiral one. I built a minecart elevator (where you right click to move upwards), but then after a day all the minecarts fell out and onto the bottom floor and the whole setup seemed really buggy. So I decided on a boatvator and built a large obsidian tower and made it really awesome. Today I finish the thing and I drown before I can get to the top...
TLDR version: What is the fastest, while still being 95% reliable, method of getting up 40 or more layers in Minecraft?
Well, this one is unknown to many.... its called a ladder. although, you could try a water ladder. im not sure if they still work.
Nah, notch fiddled with some coding in the last few updates (somewhere between 1.5 and 1.7) and made it so that water ladders don't work as good as they used to.
If you don't want to be completely vanilla, there is always the elevator mod. I use it all the time, just change the config files to the desired speed.
since water ladders doesn't work, just use minecart with booster rails.
I was just about to post this as well, it may not be the fastest but at least you can sit back relax and take a swig of your beer while taking a ride :cool.gif:
going downwards you could just drop into a deep enough pool of water...
As for going up, although yes, there's ladders, pistons are more fun.
As for *spirals* of pistons... why not just have a stack of 12 sticky-pistons, with a semi-complex redstone circuit surrounding it on 3/4 of its sides.... 1 piston puts you up to a stack of 2, 2 put you up to a stack of 4, 4 send you up to a stack of 8, 8 sends you up 16 blocks, to the top of a raised up stack of 12, which sends you up 24 blocks, to a higher stack of 12....
when facing the stack, the redstone would have to go left, back, right, left, back, right, and be on alternating layers, and timed propperly, but there's no reason I could see that it couldn't be done... Plus it would be open to maintanance. you could even combine this with minecarts. then again I'm kind of a noob at redstone, I'm happy to make a collapsing sand bridge, or a drum sequencer that use a 32 clock and a few AND-Gates, so I don't know how that circuit would look, I can just imagine it being more efficient (less risk of jams, less pistons, can't get stuck, etc)
I could imagine piston spirals being a pain to light... Imagine your horror when a creeper spawns inside of one and you get pushed right into it, and are stuck riding up with it.

Don't tell me that the sky is the limit, when there are footprints on the moon.
Boat elevators are by far the fastest way to travel vertically if you don't want to use pistons. They are a bit of a pain to set up, but they work very well once you do.
Easy way-
Make several floors, 4 blocks apart, punch a straight hole through each one of them so it forms a long drop, place a ladder one block beneath the hole, place a rail such that if you put a minecart in it and push the minecart, it gets stuck in the ladder. destroy the rail.
When you want to go up,sit in a minecart, look above at the minecart on the next floor, hold right click.Release right click to deport.Use water drop for going down.
Enjoy near-instant floor selecting elevator.
Depending on how far you have to go, nether portals might work. They link to the nearest portal in the destination world (in 3D space), so two portals in the nether right on top of one another with a ladder would take the same travel time no matter how far you have to go.
It would take very careful positioning of the nether-side portals, but it should work.

Best way up is minecart sitting on a ladder.
Best way down is a water break/pit.
Search minecart ladder on youtube to get examples... You just aim up and hold right click and rapidly jump from cart to cart to the top. If you want to go down a floor or two you can right click the cart you are in to get out and fall through the cart to the floor below.
I would encase the carts in halfblocks, so the cart can't move but you can still get out. Game mechanic wise you are actually climbing out off the ladder, so whatever wall your ladder is on is the side you should exit. Or you could use a cart on a track to make the final jump out.

Is there a reason they fall down? Do I need to build it using the South/West rule or something?
EDIT: Yes, I obviously know about ladders...
Only forum I could find it on.

And I thought the whole point of Minecraft was to tool around in Minecarts.
