People are assuming things when in fact they have no proof. The MC Wiki does say that the pumpkin will prevent them from attacking you, but believing everything a wiki says without finding the facts yourself is just... stupid. The line that says that isn't tagged to anything official, so I wouldn't believe it until new word comes out or until you see for yourself in 1.8.
Actually... this is copied from the MC Wiki discussion page.
NOTCH NEVER SAID THAT THE PUMPKIN ON THE PLAYER'S HEAD HAS ANY SIGNIFICANCE!!
In the new image with the pumpkin, the player is looking straight at the Enderman. There is no proof that the Enderman ignores you when you have the pumpkin, becaue the player AND THE ENDERMAN are both staring at each other. Please remove that ungrounded theory. EDIT: I had looked at the thread... I just couldn't find where he said that.-MinecraftBen 15:17, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Ben, you do know that with the picture he said that per user request(that request was from a small group I'm in) he added that Endermen don't attack you when your wearing a pumpkin, since they're useless anyways.Ajc 1254 15:22, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
As stated above, yeah he did. Research before you post. - DarkAuk 15:51, 5 August 2011 (UTC)
Also, notice that the Endermans eyes are still green. There is proof that he ignores you. -iSmile 7:03PM 6 August 2011(ETC)
Yes, that's true.Ajc 1254 12:29, 6 August 2011 (UTC)
So apparently pumpkins DO prevent endermen from attacking you... go figure.
While never explicitly stating that the pumpkin provided protection from endermen, that was assumed by virtually all posters, and Notch did not post anything to contradict this.
Logic. Look at this image, what you see with a pumpkin on your head (image from the wiki).
Now, endermen become hostile when you put the pointer thing directly at them. However, with the pumpkin it is obscured, therefore you cannot accidentally look directly at them, as you can't see it due to the blur. That is why they don't become passive, as you technically are not looking directly at them.
That's the logic behind the idea, and someone linked the Reddit post where Notch said he'd add it. We just have to wait to be sure.

Look, I'm not going to read through all of these replies, but if it hasn't been said yet, he has clearly stated this on Reddit. Don't be so skeptical of everything instantly. Reddit link

EDIT: It's spelled "pumpkins," and yes, we do have proof.
We'd have more reason to believe it does then it doesn't. Not only is it stated on the "fake" wiki but the announcement about Farlander or Endermen also stated that it seems when you look at Endermen with a pumpkin then dun notice you. Your looking for a simple, yet retarded way to hate and I feel like I wasted my time explaining what someone who started reading 2 weeks ago should understand.

You look like you cast dark magic and eviscerate babies.
if you look close enough, the enderman isnt staring at notch and notch said that when you look at an enderman, it stares at you. hes not staring at notch because hes wearing a pumkin. and im guessing notch is looking at the enderman's hand (well i think thats how it looks like)
Another user just said that notch said it? I do not see where notch says he added pumpkins making it ignore you and just another user saying it means nothing.
Also you do not know if enddermans eyes turn red when he is hostile, or when he is about to be hostile so that is not really proof.
I still guess that it does stop it noticing you though just because it makes sense and there probably was a reason to wearing it.
Notch is wearing a pumpkin while looking at one. It never showed him looking away.
Minecraft Wiki isn't Mojang run. They get their info the same way we do.

You have just read this. You are also manually breathing.

August 2nd, Notch posted "Sure, I will add that!"

end.
of.
story.
It's when they're in your view (Even peripherals!) that they are neutral. When you turn, they're hostile.
I think it's a reasonable trade off, protection from Enderman in exchange for reduced visibility/armor.
I'm pretty sure there's no pumpkins in Minecraft and there will never be.
You got to be kidding me =|
