For all of us Minecrafters, we know that cobblestone is only generated naturally in dungeons or water/lava mixtures, so what I found is either a strange glitch, or Herobrine (just joking, relax people). Upon walking around on an adventure in my SMP server far away from my base, I spotted this strange landmark on a hill:
This would be easy for anyone to create, but I was the one who noticed it, and it doesn't end there. We asked each other seriously if they had made it. I didn't make it, my friend was brand new to the server since yesterday, and my other friend was the only suspicion. He promised us several times that he hadn't been here before, and since I was his partner on this server since it's creation, I would have known if he ever traveled in this exact direction for such a distance.
We decided to dig down a bit, and found that it kept going underground in a 1x1 cobblestone pillar. We kept circling it digging downwards, noticing plenty of minerals.
If my friend had honestly created this a long time ago, he would have definitely mined the minerals, and what are the chances we would coincidentally lead him to the exact location where he wanted to do this prank?
/\ This is after we ended up in a small cave, which was unlit. We cleared out a few spiders, and continued downwards, until we found ourselves in another cave, probably 20 blocks below. the pillar spread out a few blocks inside the cave, however.
We kept digging deeper, expecting it to hit bedrock. Below both the caves, the pillar continued in its 1x1 manner, and we followed it very deep. I broke through a block beneath myself, and fell several blocks until I hit more stone. Here is me looking upward towards my laughing friends:
After digging even deeper, we noticed the pillar stop abruptly. There was a tiny room at it's bottom with lava:
The source block is on the right, and I concluded it probably didn't have anything to do with the cobblestone pillar. We realized this was the end of the deal, after digging a few blocks of pure stone and hitting bedrock.
Obviously anyone could create this. You'd have to trust that I wouldn't spend 15 minutes writing a forum topic on such a simple concept. Maybe my post count can justify something?
So, what do you think? I'm baffled. I thought originally that it may have been lava flowing down and being hardened by water, but how could the above-ground cobblestone be formed? Is there any explanation?
Asking people seriously doesn't mean much. Either you're lying or they're lying. In the very tiny chance that none of you did it, it could be a glitch. But I wouldn't bet money on that option.
That's very odd, i would suspect that either your friends are pulling a prank (Even though you said they didn't, its still plausible.) or that Notch has added secret random blocks of cobblestone.
1- Your friend is lying, he made it to troll you.
2- Its on SMP, a random guy could do this to troll you.
3- You did this so that you could troll us. (I don't give a **** about post count)
4- You found the cobblestone tower of life/conspiracy/random ****.
EDIT: If you are saying that no one made it then why not give us the seed and coordinates?
Hello, I don't usually follow threads that I post in. So if you would like to have a civilized chat / reply / argument that is of the utmost importance, just PM me. =)
Somebody was probably using xray and saw diamond so they dug straight down and pillared up with cobblestone.
Not possible, it's my server and only 2 other people are allowed in, both of which don't know how to use mods. Once again, I can only tell you from my experience, if you don't believe this, there is no way I can prove anything.

1- Highly unlikely, I went there first and noticed it, so he didn't guide me there.
2- It's a private Hamachi server
3- Once again, no proof either way. And obviously you do care about post count, or you wouldn't have said that.
4- I sure as hell hope so. Probably just some sort of strange chunk error

With the fact that we see dozens of threads like this every day and the part I bolded in mind:
What was the point of posting this then? You knew we wouldn't believe you, you can't prove anything, etc.
In fact, if you give us the seed and coordinates, we can provide more evidence not to trust you.

Okayy, what if it were a 1x1 lake of lava with water spawned right on top of it?
Meh, I've never heard of this, but who knows. It went practically to bedrock, so I have no idea how it could have happened that perfectly. The lava at the bottom hinted something, but I'm sure it's just an odd glitch.

Seed and coordinates? That would really clear lots of doubts. =)

Perhaps it was spliced in from a different world? However, seeing as this is on SMP I honestly don't have any explanation. The only natural thing that could spawn this would be a floating lava source block, which was then cooled by water to form the long pillar of cobble, but I can't say where the obsidian block would be.
Chunk generation error is the most likely explanation. Possibly a lake/waterfall and lava lake/lavafall tried to generate in the same area causing the cobblestone mix and degeneration of evidence, creating a cobble pillar. Check to see if the cobble pillar breaks through the bedrock layer to The Void. If it does, chunk generation error it is. Lavafall generations do break through bedrock sometimes. Add conflicting waterfall generation and you got yourself a cobble pillar. One time in SMP I found a random pillar of air deep underground going to the surface and down through the bedrock. You could jump through the hole and end up in The Void.
Please quote the part of the Rules where it says that.

Although, there's prolly an explanation.
I'm just too lazy to look it up.
