Hello! In 1.6.6, notch added a new use for Bonemeal. That is, using it on grass will create Flowers and Tall Grass. I would like to see how everyone has applied this.
So far, most designs I have seen have been very basic, using water to harvest. As I am, I believe I have created a far better design, and I would like feedback on it.
My design revolves around the fact that Flowers and Tall Grass are destroyed in the dark. Here you can see how I have applied that, in a way I believe to be new, and video-worthy.
Keep in mind that this requires about 100 redstone to create. However, most people have far more than that, and little to do with it.
Also, I don't intend this thread to be a video showcase, more of a discussion of effective flower-gathering.
you can just make a very small dark room and just spam the bone meal instead of using red stone :biggrin.gif:
You can, but why would you? As I said, it can take up to ~10 seconds for the flowers to go away, while with this design, they go away (almost) instantly.

they do go way instantly i just tested it. you just have to spam on the ground because the new growth updates the state of the block thus making the flower and tall grass uproot just like what the red dust do

Yea, the blocks have a chain-reactionish type effect on each other, but without the redstone, it occasionally "jams", when a tall grass is on the block that you were going to place Bonemeal on.
I prefer this. The Redstone isn't complicated, and there are absolutly no hiccups at all. It's up to you what you use.
Also, I think that your choice might be less efficient. Basically, the newly spawned Grasses/Flowers will uproot the older ones. However, the older ones will also not allow them to spawn on the same block they are, thus denying them a place to spawn, in theory giving you half as many items...
However, further discussion/testing would be great.

I'm testing the second theory now, here were my totals using three stacks of Bonemeal:
Redstone: 861 Seeds, 476 Yellow Flowers, 269 Red Flowers
Without: 850 Seeds, 493 Yellow Flowers, 286 Red Flowers
Well, that seems busted. Not sure what these results entail, but in my testing, using Redstone, it was a lot faster, and I still think the small investment of time is worth it.
Why would there be time difference?? It's reliant on how fast you can click not harvest
Harvesting without redstone is not instant. Even in a dark room, the plants take a while before popping out. With the redstone, they are instantly updated, getting harvested much faster.
ethos is much better its cheaper and more effective
No, it's definately less effective. You get less items per bonemeal and take a freakin lot longer for each harvest.
Nice trick with the redstone! Anyway, you could hold you right button down too...
About the no difference between with or without redstone, thats basically because most things uproot almost instantanely, so those few leftovers dont do that much of a difference.

From what I've noticed, this is pretty much true, except for when a Tall Grass/Flower remains in the location that you want to place your bonemeal. I just like this design more, as that never happens, and it isn't too hard to assemble.

I have too much of the darn stuff anyway :biggrin.gif:
Compared to other designs, this is actually a pretty efficient use of the Bonemeal. If you've seen Etho's design, he uses about 20 bonemeal a harvest!

My tests might have been flawed some way, without a further explanation, I'm going to call this as luck/lack of it.
Also, compared to the time difference, this isn't a very significant loss...

Bonemeal is easy, make a mob trap.
_________
Anyway, brilliant creation. =D I'll probably install one once my mob trap is finished.
It's hard to overstate my satisfaction!
