So I do need to be within 16 blocks for the mobs to spawn if it's a dungeon spawner?
Yes, you do. Your question confuses me though. Why can't you just afk somewhere within 16 blocks of the spawner? You'll have to make some modifications, of course. might help a lot in helping you figure out how to design a trap around the spawner.
if you are using a dungeon to spawn your mobs, then yes you have to be within 16 blocks of it..... if you have built a dark room spawner trap, then you have much more room.

I think I have misused the expression AFK: I was meaning more of AFS (away from spawner) than away from keyboard.
Oh, I get it. Yeah, with a dungeon spawner you have to hang out right by it while it works. A darkroom spawner works while you are anywhere within 128 blocks (and not closer than 24), but there's a catch: mobs despawn randomly after 30 seconds if they're more than 32 blocks away from you. So if you want them to pile up and then kill them for XP, you still have to hang out nearby. If you're just letting them die to collect their drops, then it doesn't matter since it won't (shouldn't) take them longer than 30 seconds anyway.

So I assumed an AFK mob farm was only useable for player built spawners.
I've a skeleton spawner miles from my 'home' so visiting it less often would be good.
Does an AFK mob farm work on dungeon spawners?
An afk mob farm is simply a mob grinder that you can squat at while it harvests monsters. This can be a spawner or player built grinder.
