To be an RPG a game requires either roleplaying to be at the heart of the game (i.e. DnD, Call of Cthulu, etc) or a dialogue, plot, and characters. (mass effect, tales of, final fantasy, etc). You can enjoy minecraft without writing a complex backstory for steve, pretending to be him and talking to other people pretending to be characters and interacting with npcs as if you are steve (the npcs wont even respond other than oinking or blowing up in your face). On the flip side, there is no dialogue (other than oinking, mooing, weird zombie noises, and people begging you to give them diamonds on multiplayer servers), no plot (unless you count that little bit of story if you beat the enderdragon, which you are never prompted to do and is completely optional, and if i remember correctly, is quite meta.), and outside of your completely silent and customizeable character, other players on multiplayer, and the various mobs running around that never say anything and mostly just exist; no characters. So in conclusion I'm... pretty sure Minecraft is not an rpg.
I agree. Some people just don't know what makes a game a certain genre. If there is a dragon it suddenly is an RPG. Magic? RPG. Village? RPG. Any kind of experience points? RPG.

This is exactly what I mean. Skill points don't necessarily make it an RPG either. A lot of games in the Final Fantasy series use stats instead of skill points and they are RPGs (and yes, there is a difference. Stats are determined by gear/level, skill points you can distribute yourself). It has to be a whole blending of different things.

Yeah, plenty of rpgs dont use skillpoints. Fire emblem doesnt! What they all have in common are things like dialogue, characters, story, etc. Minecraft has none of those.

What it actually has is RPG elements (dungeons with loot, monster drops, levels, enchants, and hell even bosses) It doesn't have to be a turn based long story with a lot of character development to be an RPG. Most games anymore have RPG elements to them (shooters with ranking for example)
When one thing that is in an RPG is added, they all complain and say beta was better. Thing is, they dont hve to use those features, they just want reasons to complain, with no solid reasons beside just to complain.

So, Zelda is an RPG because it got monsters dropping things on death, dungeons, and bosses.
Roleplaying game, is taking a role of a person.
Minecraft was technically always an RPG, since you take the role as Steve or whatever character skin you choose to make your own if you really want to.

It doesnt have to be TURN-BASED but it has to have a story with some level of character development.

Zelda actually sort of IS an rpg for all i've been arguing against it being one for the longest time. Not for the reasons you listed, but it has dialogue, story, and characters to a similar extent that an RPG would. You don't have to take the role of steve/your character skin though. you aren't encouraged to, even.

That is where you are wrong. A story with character development doesn't mean it's an RPG (CoD isn't a RPG because it has a story mode, it's a FPS with RPG elements) or that it HAS to have that to be an RPG. Anymore there are no more PURE game genres with all the mixes going on.
What is kind of going on anymore is that RPG is falling out of it's own game and is popping up in a LOT of games as supporting elements.
I'm not trying to argue or anything, but it's a bit silly in my opinion to be fixed in thinking a genre HAS to "Fit in this exact box" to be called that.

You... can't even say minecraft has rpg elements, though, is my point. And what i'm saying is that it needs to be the FOCUS. Yes, most games dont fit just one genre, thatd be boring. But you cant deny that a focus on those is the basic requirement to be an rpg. If it doesnt, then it isnt.
Zelda is a bad example. The Legend of Zelda is an ARPG (Action Roll Playing Game). You take the roll of a specific character, but there is also action.
In MineCraft the only way I could explain it would be calling it an "Adventure Sandbox Game" that has minor RPG elements such as a loose ending with a small storyline, as well as dungeons, treasures, and a goal.

I'm sorry have you played anything past beta? Exp, Levels, Progressive equipment, Enchants (going along the lines of magic), villager trading, and a technical end to the game (no matter how bad it is)
Minecraft is a sandbox builder/explorer(which could be debated as ANOTHER RPG element) that has been fleshed out into a game primarily focusing on RPG elements. To say it has none makes me wonder if you even know what came from RPGs.
its a Sandbox Survival Game. It CAN be an RPG IF your play a custom map. it CAN be a Mini-game if you play a custom map. Minecraft is perfect because it can be anything you want it to be.
