Hello my son is 8 and lovessssss minecraft he just got his own computer and now he wants tekkittts, mods and I am lost I have no idea what is considered safe and what is good for a 8 yr old boy. we have the paid version of minecraft. I have googled and I have watched utube videos my head is spinnig. Thank you in advance for your help.
Well... generally if a mod has a lot of downloads, it's safe and will not have viruses or anything. What you consider appropriate for him could vary a lot depending on what you consider okay for him. Take tekkit. It's great and all, but it has alcohol use, which some parents may not agree with. With the installing... try to start with something simple. Like a texture pack. Download, use 7zip to extract the folder, and put it in the texture packs area.

Tekkit is indeed safe, as is most mods @ planetminecraft.com
What I'd recommend you do is go to the http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Mods/Installing_mods and familiarize yourself there. Youtube is quite confusing for installing mods. Instead of getting 7zip like Frog suggested, go w/ WinRar (for windows or linux). I've seen a few errors w/ 7zip in the past, but never w/ winrar yet.
I'd actually recommend you play minecraft on his account, and gradually get used to it. Heck, you may even find it fun and find yourself having a LAN world w/ him

I've never seen a 7zip error. Plus with Winrar you have to buy it or it pops up an annoying "PLEASE PURCHASE WINRAR" message every time you open it.
There is no explicit Minecraft mods, so you're fine with that (exception of one or two>.>). If I were you. Get the two above and go with the flow from there:)
Well... some parents have different opinions of what is appropriate than just vulgarity. For example, some may object to alcohol use, like in the Industrialcraft mod.
Safe meaning viruses and something a 8 yr old can see I am not a prude and I don't shelter him but I need to be a parent as well. All this minecraft stuff is overwhelming for me and hes been bugging me to get mods and tekkits and I told him that he would have to wait till I got him his own computer cuz I ddin't want mine to crash..so I am surpriseing him wiht his own computer and getting it ready with minecraft things..I downloaded the 7zip thank you for that idea and I am going to do the tekkit..is that pretty easy I don't have to delete files and stuff to use it do I. meaning %appdata% and jar crap lol..sorry I am talking in circles

Okay. If you're worried about viruses just make sure it has a decent amount of downloads (If they aren't reporting viruses in the mod, then there probably aren't any), and get an antivirus.
No No No. Listen to my post. 7Zip is horrible too, Winrar is better but at the end of the day. My post is probably the most helpful. Use Minecraften Terminal and Technic Launcher.
What's wrong with 7Zip? I find it is less in-your-face and has better user interface. And... Ahem... I prefer FTB over tekkit.
I notice Verringer has a very high opinion of his own advice...
But anyway...you do not need to use a special launcher created by some third party to install tekkit, or FeedTheBeast (FTB) which is another huge and highly popular modpack either.
They both have their own launcher that you simply download from their site and then run it, no muss, no fuss, no worries.
To get the (in my opinion better modpack) FeedTheBeast launcher go here... http://feed-the-beas...ownload_wrapper
(get the download.exe if using Windows)
From what I've seen 7Zip is rather stable too, and is also COMPLETELY free instead of popping a message in your face every time you use it when the 30 day trial ends. And I'm just putting it out there that she could show her son FTB too, because it has modpacks that aren't technical-stuff based. Besides, Oh, and it also is set up to allow you to disable any mods you don't like with 2 clicks. And, ahem, even if I didn't provide the info, someone else would.
7zip is great, and it's free. It's just as stable and usable as winrar, and it doesn't bother you every time you open it to buy it, unlike winrar.
Note that I use Winrar and have always used Winrar since the late 90s but that does not mean that I am biased against 7zip, I just prefer Winrar because it is what I know.
7zip works fine, and if you own a Mac computer it is pretty much mandatory because Macs don't really "do" .rar files natively, they only work with .zip's.
Verringer you are letting your personal preference for a particular program color your judgement and advise people not to use another perfectly usable program. One that millions are using everyday without any problems at all and that many have to use because of their computer platform.
Your argument that "you heard some people had errors" is invalid, this is the internet and home computers we are talking about after all. Since when has there ever been a program that you didn't "hear had some errors"?
I have had errors with Winrar, so what? Every program and Operating System will throw the occasional error, just restart and then do it again like everyone else does when their system gets cranky.
Thank you all again and heck 7zip or winrar it's basically the same if I have a problem I will uninstall one and install the other.. I am just trying to make a Lil minecraft junkie happy..I tried to play I stink. I have been taking in all your comments I am greatfull to you all.
For installing, go to your minecraft folder: C:\Users\Susie\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin (On windows, I've got no idea about Linux and Mac), and right click your minecraft.jar folder, and select "Open With". If WinRar/7Zip isn't already there (WinRAR is actually faster, it's been proven when it comes to unzipping: the only thing you're probably planning on doing), and find WinRAR/7zip (fastest compression).
Once you are @ that screen, drag and drop the mods into the .minecraft (unless the installation instructions state not to), and test the file after each new mod, and back it up on the desktop or somewhere.
Tekkit, FeedTheBeast, YogBox, and other "Mod Packs" are pretty straight foward. You just download them and it's basically a new Minecraft Launcher that opens Minecraft with a group of mods pre-installed.
I would choose Tekkit since they have different packs to choose from (including YogBox)
Just click on "Download the Launcher" and it will download the Launcher.
You can also click on "Browse Modpacks" and it will let you see all the packs you can choose from before you can start the game.
For example, click on "CaptainSparklez Survival Pack" and it will give you a brief description on the pack and a list of mods that it uses. Choosing these packs saves you time rather than installing each mod individually.
There's the official link for YogBox.Althoug if you want to do yourself, I would recommend Better Dungeons and Twilight Forrest. My 12 year old sister loves those. As well as MinecraftComesAlive.
I got a brother playing minecraft he's 6 and there's no problem about it and also no problem about minecraft too. and also the mods they're mods that are probihited to play like weeds mod, alcohol mod, and also the gore mod from ichun I think. and also my brother doesn't have any mods about those.

Probably objecting to mods that, say, generate massive sky penises and add massive amounts of blood & gore or something like that.

Indeed. I used YogBox back when I began to play MC. Now I install everything myself.
