Dude, by my minecraft texture pack playing experience, i bet u used SIMPLE CRAFT TEXTUREPACK, and no mods, btw, my fps is just belllow 15, be cause i use alot of mods, 59 OF THEM (* Screaming:" ITS OVER 9000, 9000, 9000 !!!!")
I use Tiny, Optifine, Fast, etc. (Lowest Settings) I got 300 FPS once.
It's a new laptop but it is A6 processor with 1.8GHZ. Raedeon graphics card.
I suggest you restore your computer (back up first) and then try playing Minecraft. it is an awesome experience. (PS I have 64x Java installed as well. It helps a LOT.)
You got over 497 due to the fact that your probably in the sky and no blocks were generated at that time causing your fps to rise. Since it isn't rendering any blocks, it won't affect your fps that much. And you were probably using a 16x16 or less texture pack causing more fps to rise. Plus you probably had Optifine installed. Honestly, that fps doesn't amaze me. Since that fps is high due to the fact given above. Try using the Default Texture pack and go in to a Jungle Biome and take a screenshot, then we'll know your real Fps.

Up to 350 fps now, as my computer probably hit puberty. That's with all of the settings turned up to the max (far render distance, etc). Used to be 60 fps, but I'm guessing with the new update they fixed some stuff that was causing low fps maybe?
