Bats annoy the crap out of me. Their movement catches my eye when I'm caving and makes me think I saw a hostile mob. Their sounds trick my brain into thinking my nose is stuffed up causing my breath to whistle, especially when I'm wearing headphones and thus the sounds seem to come from inside my skull. If I try to kill them, I at best waste durability on my sword, at worst get distracted flailing about at them and fall off a cliff or get blindsided by a creeper creeping up on me from behind. If I ignore them, they fly around right in front of me, getting in the way of my attempts at torch/block placement or fighting hostile mobs. I've had several arrows intended for zombies, creepers, or skeletons instead skewer bats who heroically threw themselves in the way of my arrows to protect the other mobs.
But...this is pretty much exactly what bats are supposed to do. Although I doubt Mojang consciously intended that nasal-whistling thing, that's probably just me. Even if the bat squeaks sound exactly like my breath whistling through a stuffed-up nasal passage. Bats are supposed to be mildly annoying and slightly creepy, yet ultimately useless. They're there to spice up otherwise-boring cave exploration expeditiions, add some ambiance, and occasionally frustrate the player who grows too complacent in their presence. And they do all of it rather well.
But I still want them to drop "Wing of Bat" as a potion ingredient, dammit. Or guano or something.

A bat's wing would have been an awesome potion ingredient, I agree. Other than that, I don't encounter bats a lot on multiplayer servers, so I don't have a problem with them.
If I played SP more, then yeah, I might not like them as much.
I know the Swedish word for bat literally translates as "flappy-mouse". Between that, their cute *meep*'s & the derpy way the always seem to fly into lava, I can't help but like them.
Bats are my least favourite Minecraft mob, and the only mob that I actively hate. (Yes, I like every other mob, except the Bat. Even the Testificates.)

I don't mind bats I just wish they served more of a purpose. As someone mentioned earlier dropping an ingredient ued for potions would be a nice addition
Honestly, I see the reason why they choose them. They needed a mob that would restrict mob spawners from being completely overpowered/exploited (because they were). However, it seems like it changed absolutely nothing, mob spawners still work fine, and they are just a mob that gives you nothing, no exp or drops. I would accept bats in the game if they actually did their job, I don't find them too much of a nuisance in-game, I just find it be another set of useless code that does nothing for the game. They should be tweaked properly, and then I won't find them annoying. Although, most of my opinions about Minecraft seem so unpopular these days...
TL;DR, until they properly work the way they should I find them to be annoying in the sense I look at it as a programmer's prospective, in-game, not so much.
How could the stupidest mob in the game scare you? (Not implying you are stupid, the 'stupidest' refers to the Bat, not you)
I get startled all the time. You know there's a monster nearby in a cave, you think he's around the corner, and BAM, there's a bat in your face. It's not really getting scared, it's getting startled. I also really like bats, and I think I know why they're implemented. If you hear a bat while you're underground, you know that there's a cave nearby. It's helped me in the past, and I don't get why anybody would hate them.

Probably won't happen though. Bats were added as aesthetic/atmospheric mods, nothing more.
everything was fine about your post until that last word happened

Bats will one day take over the world.
