It's all opinion. Some think its good, some people think its bad.
exactly. theres three kinds of PC gamers, the ones who really like minecraft, the ones who think its the most terrible game ever, and the ones who have never heard of it, tried, or just dont like it that much.
so in the eyes of the haters, minecraft is super overrated. in the eyes of the junkies, its kind of under appreciated. for the third group, its also kinda overatted.
there ya have. it just depends on what group your in.
I don't think minecraft is overrated but i do think the community is beginning to split, and become more fanboyish, i hate when people see any game related to building like Brickforce, Terraria, Survival Craft, or Ace of Spades and call it a minecraft rip off were it have uniuqe features anyways, last time i checked minecraft was based on infiminer.
Unfortunately, you just listed all the good things about Minecraft besides the fact that it has a massive community that produces mods to fix what Mojang is too lazy to do (well, besides the first point; it IS randomly generated, but the world doesn't play like a randomly generated world).
I was console gamer at the time so I thought mods were illegal and would break the game forever. Silly me.

A new game? You could preorder it since 2009! This is not new. There is some other games in which you get resources to build and stuff. Look up "Starforge", so much freaking amazing.
An A LOT of other games keep being updated all the time. So Minecraft is not the only one of its kind.
As in new, I meant in bringing in a new genre. Well, popularizing a new genre. Sorry for using a misleading word.
The whole concept of Minecraft wasn't new (infiniminer). Notch just had a lot of luck in getting this game so popular so fast. The hype around it then caused for a massive amount of people to take interest. The thing that keeps it alive is the modding ability. Every player can customize the game to their liking by installing mods, although mods aren't something new either, the sheer amount of mods is simply amazing.
The game is something different, but nothing all that innovating. It just exploded somehow. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck I guess
True. But they changed it around a lot. Infinimer was more of a team-based game if I recall correctly and Minecraft turned it into a sandbox. But yes, lots of luck was involved.
I think it is 'over rated' simply because, like other sandbox games, it does not force you to do anything.
It is a sandbox game not in the sense that there are randomly generated worlds, or the game plays out a different way each time, like Torchlight or Mount & Blade, but it lets you do what you want in the sense where, if you want to play the game without mining any diamonds, so be it.
There is no learning curve, and there are no rules.
Ok, hello guys. I'm not being a hater or anything and I am new to the forums. I have played Minecraft with my friends, but I don't see why they think it's better than any other sandbox game or to any game in general.
They keep saying "Oh minecraft is the only game of it's kind and you can do anything in it". I disagree with that.
Garry's Mod is another sandbox game with a bunch of content and mods and such. There is even a Minecraft mod for Gmod!
The other thing I don't get is why people say it's the best Indie game EVER. I wouldn't even call MC an indie.
I do like MC but I don't see why it's so overrated.
So anyways, bye.
I don't care about anything else you said other then my underlined phrase. An indie game is a game you make on your own without a huge game company like Nintendo or Activision. To sum up, if you made a really famous game in your mother's basement, then it's an indie. MC started as Cave Game, something Notch made in his free time, maybe in a basement of some sort.

Message me yours if you want to trade in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or just need some friends to play with. I can also do Pokemon trades in Pokemon X(or Y), but I don't have any good stuff, and the only good stuff I have is not for trade so...send me requests anyway.

Congratulations for completely missing the point. The topic isn't about whether Minecraft was an indie game or not, and at this point it doesn't matter since Mojang is a pretty financially successful company right now (not to mention that at the moment Minecraft is officially released so there's no excuse for why so many of the main features are lacking).

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?

*Takes award* Thanks! I just wanted to correct him because he said Minecraft isn't an indie game. It still is, no matter how successful the game is or Mojang in general.

But it's not the only game that lets you do whatever you want! I'm mad at people because of saying "It lets you do anything!", because it doesn't. In the game you have a world with no physics, which limits the possibilities. I also hate when people say "U gotta be smart to play tis game", because that's not the case.
Well actually, gravel and sand have physics. And you can get a mod that adds one. Just sayin'.
Minecraft is great and all, but it is annoying how some people think that minecraft is the ONLY game worth playing, or atleast the only sandbox game. I love all kinds of sandbox games! Minecraft, Towns, that kind of thing.
Unfortunately, you just listed all the good things about Minecraft besides the fact that it has a massive community that produces mods to fix what Mojang is too lazy to do (well, besides the first point; it IS randomly generated, but the world doesn't play like a randomly generated world).
Name one thing that Mojang is too lazy to do. (Not terrain )

What main features? Sky dimension? That was replaced by the end. Mod API? Read this: http://www.minecraft...0#entry20969593
terrrain? this is already one of the main features BUT! The terrain is something I would like improved. Its just not on my list of things I have to complain about in every post,
Eh, I think the biggest part of the hype machine is the fact that it's the one of the big names in indie gaming, and it's huge. While you can't do EVERYTHING, you can do a hell of a lot, and it's an adventure game as well. People love adventure games. By people I mean me, by the way. Also, know what I did when I ran out of ideas for things to do? I downloaded a mod that gave me more things to do. I know that's not unique to Minecraft, but it does enrich an already versatile and diverse gaming experience.
TL; DR: The game is fun, so just relax and ignore both the haters and the fanbase. Enjoy the game on its own merits for your own reasons.

Watch me mine for crafts, craft mines, fall down shafts and do a bunch of other things that may or may not involve blocks.
minecraft in my opinion is the best game out there it is easy to play and it is simple. it also does let you do "anything you want" it lets you build and mine that takes care of the want to both make art and survive, and if there is something that isnt in minecraft you can get a mod, if you dont like how it looks you can get a texture pack, if you want to live in something cool but arent good at building you can get a map. so i dont see why you think minecraft is overrated i think it deserves the credit for all the awesome things it adds to the gaming world
You seem to be treating Gmod like some sort of god, so let me tell you an argument from ZP:
Gmod is fun and all, but unlike Minecraft, there is no satisfaction. If you can just snap your fingers and bring up 15 explosive barrels and a slew of ragdolls, the spectacle loses its appeal. Minecraft is a responsible parent, making you earn your giant golden house, making you wash its car for 5 dollars a day until you've saved up enough to buy it. You appreciate that giant house more when your surrounded by the continent you had to dig up to find the resources required.
However, I realize that you think that Minecraft is overrated since it is the most popular indie game. The definition of overrated is pretty much when a game gets more hype then it deserves. Just because a game is popular does not mean it is overrated or bad. That kind of mindset makes you look like a hipster brat. While I will consent that Minecraft is a bit more popular than it should be, it is certainly not enough to make it overrated.

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...
Is minecraft over rated... not in the least. You can really do anything in the game, either just build explore mine.. or play with comunity built mods giving the game almost never ending possilbities for fun. I've never really seen anyone say that its truly the greatest game ever so its not being over fluffed Now its probably one of the most fun games i've played that no matter what i can come back too even after months of being tired of it.
minecraft is just all out a great game. theres a never ending possibilities to what you can do on minecraft. there the adventurous and creative sides to this game. creative mode for thoes who like to create things and not have to worry about mobs attacking you then theres the survival where you have to begin from nothing and work at surviving and building its a simple game place and break blocks anyone can do it and thats why its so big my 7 year old sister plays it and knows exactly what your doing and im 19 and play this game and i know what to do its the fact that anyone can play it. and then theres the mods mods made this game blow up in popularity it expands what you can do, take a look at feed the beast it gives you 26 mods everywhere to more rail carts new demotions to new ores you have to collect to build new things like a generator or a quarry where it mines for you so you can expand your home build more things you need. basically there no end to where notch can go with minecraft or the people that make the mods. so its pretty much that there no age restriction everyone knows what to do and then theres mods to expand your experience in the 8 bit reality and you cant forget the awesome creeper minecraft is nothing without a creeper a sneaky little guy who will ruin your creations and theres the fact that there is multiplayer around the world or local.
so in the eyes of the haters, minecraft is super overrated. in the eyes of the junkies, its kind of under appreciated. for the third group, its also kinda overatted.
