Ok, hello guys. I'm not being a hater or anything and I am new to the forums. I have played Minecraft with my friends, but I don't see why they think it's better than any other sandbox game or to any game in general.
They keep saying "Oh minecraft is the only game of it's kind and you can do anything in it". I disagree with that.
Garry's Mod is another sandbox game with a bunch of content and mods and such. There is even a Minecraft mod for Gmod!
The other thing I don't get is why people say it's the best Indie game EVER. I wouldn't even call MC an indie.
I do like MC but I don't see why it's so overrated.
Minecraft came as a breath of fresh air. The Gaming market is saturated with shooters and other genre specific games with linear gameplay. Minecraft lets you pretty much do what you want.
Whether or you think it deserves high praise or not is up to you. I'm glad it's doing so well. Because when that Minecraft killer game comes out, it will be glorious.
But it's not the only game that lets you do whatever you want! I'm mad at people because of saying "It lets you do anything!", because it doesn't. In the game you have a world with no physics, which limits the possibilities. I also hate when people say "U gotta be smart to play tis game", because that's not the case.
It's so accessible: because the only real thing that would classify it as an adult game would be fantasy violence, the game is pretty much E for everyone. This makes it so lots of different age groups can enjoy it.
It was something new: When Minecraft came along in Alpha it was a breath of fresh air because the main indie games on the market were puzzle platformers, and the AAA market was shooters. This brought something new to the gaming industry.

You appear to not understand the terms "You can do anything!"
It's a sandbox game. People mean that you can build, explore, fight, read and mine! Minecraft has no limit, or storyline.
I mean, take a look at call of duty. You always NEED to to something. Nothing is optional. You MUST kill someone, you MUST run away, you MUST shoot. In minecraft you don't have any of that. You can LITERALLY do ANYTHING!
Find dungeons, travel to the nether, kill monsters, cut wood, install mods...
Really. Everything is possible. Not everything in real life. But everything Minecraft grants. And that IS alot that it grants.
While other games just grant 1 or 2 possiblity's. Still don't understand? Read again.
I assume you are referring to Garry's mod (great game). But this game lacks the feature to easily shape the terrain without creating a new map in the Hammer Editor. Also, Minecraft is so simplistic with its 16x textures and blocky setup.
In the Gmod Steam workshop section you can find some really good maps.

Ok so first of all I hate COD or mostly any shooter so take those out of the discussion lol. And also MC is not the only game that has near infinite possibilities.
Its fun, a unique fully customizable multiplayer experience (even more so in 1.5) and a great community!
Oh boy... the community. It is a big community, but sometimes it gets annoying. Big part of it is a bunch of 7 year olds that compare EVERYTHING to Minecrart. Ex "Hey skitscape in GTA4 i found a street called obsidian street. minecraft references!". I literally read that comment on a Skitscape video of GTA4.

Sorry for getting Gmod into this discussion so dang much, but I need to. Gmod was first released as a tiny sandbox where you could only connect things by ropes. This Gmod demo thing was released at 2006. Also, Notch got the Minecraft idea from Infiniminer. So Notch got ideas from other indie games which were quite not popular, but MC actually became popular.
It's the most original game i ever seen/played
so...no,it's not overrated,it's just rated as how good it is
Not overrated? Wat. Are you kidding me? This is the most popular "Indie" game and probably the most well known game ever! It's a huge part of the gaming section in Youtube, and probably has the most active community ever. And it's not original. Notch took the idea from Infiniminer.
In the Gmod Steam workshop section you can find some really good maps. Also bad ones.

The community is WAY bigger than you.

COD was an example. I meant most games. But it appears you are just arguing about it... So you don't like it.
Then WHY even buy the game!? WHY even sign up on the forums!? WHY even talk about it!?
If you don't like it, don't play.

Where did you first hear about minecraft?
Was it from a friend who raved about the game?
Was it from some popular game orientated media? Whether if it was a video from your favorite youtube channel, or a comic strip from penny arcade, or an article from kotaku...
For me, I first heard about it from a friend. Of course as most suggestions thrown to me, I dismiss it. Why did I dismiss it, because just hearing the premise of the game you already know what it offers.
Eventually, it was so over saturated on every media outlet, I figured I should give it a shot.
As for better or worse comparison to other games, for the player, that's mostly a matter of opinion.
You can compare aspects of learning curve, the aesthetics, new content and so on. Mostly self evident stuff you do when comparing games...
As the difficulty or tools provided for people making mods and tweaking the game, that's another aspect, which I'm pretty sure you're not concerned about when comparing if a game is better or worse...
And I'm sure you already know this, but there are a lot of games out there. Unfortunately, a lot of them are under the radar despite being good or not.
@OP: Hopefully that fulfills your curiosity.
Then again I don't think you're looking for this type of reply... probably fishing for people extremely devoted or obsessed with minecraft.

I knew it was publicity. But now I don't get why pretty much all the people who played became fans of the game.
EDIT: Also, re the "Infiniminer" thing. the "idea" for minecraft sprang up from Infiniminer, but is in no way the same. Infiniminer focussed on teamplay, and the block manipulation was used towards that goal. The games were also transient. Minecraft took the idea of a block-oriented, user-manipulated terrain and put it as the core of a survival-oriented game where you gather and craft materials.

I'm just glancing at the general replies for this thread.
So few thing I've noticed. First, people compare games to CoD? Why CoD? Probably because that's the common grounds accepted for popular games. Do most of those people who speak of CoD actually play any version of CoD? Maybe, maybe not, but they sure as hell have heard of it.
Some other keywords that might keep popping up; original, simple, and new.
I've noticed you've made a reference to gmod, Garry's Mod. Maybe in hope to enlighten some people towards more games of the same genre. Maybe you'll attract a few people to explore into gmod and maybe even other games.
So where do they get this knowledge of games offered to them? Do they actually spend their own time digging around looking for new games, or unheard of games, or even explore games that aren't even published in their language to play? For a lot of people, the answer is probably no. So, as far most people are concerned, minecraft offers a truly new and novel genre of gameplay for them.

So anyways, bye.

I now play cube world along with mc.

Mojang is a group of 16 persons. I'd called that a tiny AAA group.

It now is a game by itself. It used to be a Half Life 2 mod.
