You don't want to know the numbers. This is why I made a firm rule that I will never cross a true ocean more than once per world. It would be bad enough normally, but Minecraft doesn't even have an autorun key!
The good news is, in a lot of the worlds I've looked at there's a certain pattern going on. Mostly you spawn on a true continent, then that ends and becomes true ocean, and there will be another true continent on the other side! But that's more of a tendency than an actual rule, so I wouldn't depend on it if you don't have to...

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."
Too big. I've had the same problem once. Once you get past a certain point in the world, it starts to generate almost only stupid oceans! If you get past 50,000 it gets even worst. (For me at least)
Imagine finding boats with mob spawners in them or tall towers peering over the ocean with good loot at the top.
Or old pirate ships with skeleton spawners and maybe even a chest with a treasure map? That'd be really hard to do right but if they could pull it off it would be so awesome!

I might be facing the same problem myself. There's an ocean near my custom village that I made in survival, and the lure of mushroom islands and exposed ravines is too much for me. I might be beginning a journey into an ocean myself . But that's what Rei's minimap is for, right?
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
This sounds like fun...I've been a bit bored playing my map...think I'll go explore an ocean right now, although I hate boats, never quite got a handle on them so I may just swim it. I'll let you know if I find anything. Wish me Bon Voyage!
I know that oceans are extremely barren and empty, but I figure that if you left your house today, hopped in a canoe, and used your hands to paddle, it would be a very long and boring trip across the Atlantic.

Except for the oil rigs, shipping, and then the massive island of trash in the middle waters.

In the real world, you stick your head in the dirt to hide from problems.
In Minecraft, you stick your head in the dirt to find problems.
My swimming finally paid off! I found a mushroom island with bunches of Mooshrooms! I was just over 3500m from my home and managed to get 4 of them home! Yipee! It took forever but totally worth it. I'm so glad to add them to my farm
Currently, I am crossing an ocean trying to find a new continent to settle on.
It's been 35,000 blocks since I last saw true land.
Oceans suck.
How big are oceans usually?
It would be nice to know.
Seeing as I've hit 35,000.
And found 4 mushroom islands.
And no more than 3 regular islands.
-__-
EDIT:
At about 73,000 blocks from spawn.
Found continent.
Find jungle.
Jungle temple.
Hidden chests has rotten flesh.
Sad, because the hidden chest most often has better loot.
Find other chest.
3 DIAMONDS.
5 EMERALDS.
So happy.
Died.
Forgot coordinates.
Remembered direction.
Crossing ocean again ATM.
Fml.
EDIT:
Got back.
So happy.
Death Chest mod installed.
All stuff saved.
SUCCESS.
Make a bed.
Sleep.
Die.
Respawn at bed.
BEST. FEELING. EVER.
Make a 2x4 house.
Hiding forever.
Never leaving.
Safe...
Safe......
Safe.........

Also, no clue why I wrote it that way. Random impulse. :S
It does? All I got from it was that oceans are big. :/
No. I was bored, and felt I needed to do something as I waited :/
In any case, that was an amazing piece of literature. I shall write it down at once and stick it on my wall.
I still fail to see anything. :/
Also, to anyone who said they were going to cross the ocean, I'll see you in 5 years.
To the guy that was going to swim it, we will all miss you.
