Because (at least AFAIK) they aren't gravel beaches. Gravel was added to the underwater bedding generator, so the "gravel beaches" are just splotches of gravel that went up to the surface and replaced some blocks on a beach. Someone mistook it for something bigger and called them "gravel beaches".
Though if there are true gravel beaches, do show a picture.

If there were true gravel beaches, I wouldn't have noticed TBH since my laptop plays MC horribly.
Please elaborate on why you think this is so; I am curious, .
The gravel beach in 1.7 is not generating like the one in beta 1.7.It generate in a small group of gravel while beta 1.7 gravel beach is generate like beach.

Ah, you are talking about the new new generation. I can't say I'm surprised since sand beaches are also lacking.
Sooo... 1.7 is almost out there and it's now absolutely certain that nothing was done to solve most of what this thread consider issues, notably the ugly beaches, the boring oceans, the swiss cheese underground, the cookie cutter biomes and lack of randomness and variations. Not to mention that slider thing.
After almost 2 years (!) I thinks we can safely say this thread has miserably failed and we should just let it die and pretend nothing ever happened.
Well at least I'll touch the world generation this time, unlike the previous one. Anyway, if I'm going to do some long-lasting worlds i'll leave it to the map makers, so you'll see me more at the maps section!
Uhh....I didn't want to have to say this...but I'm now actually thinking this thread is reasonable and all your complaints are reasonable...
They're already releasing 1.7!!! Just...NO! It is not complete. Biomes were added, a temperaturesystem was added, other stuff...but there's still so much to be added and worked on! Why Mojang? WHHHHYYYYYY???!!! I want my multi-layer rivers (and waterfalls), among many other things!
For the love of Notch! Maybe Jeb should call him up about how he made the generation before 1.8 so great.
1.7 PRE-RELEASE?!?!?!!??!?!
*Darth Vader's NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!*
JUST WHY!!
It wasnt even half finished IMO.
Dangit Mojang!! I expected an update that will make me play SP again, but no.
*Goes and cries in a corner*
I hate you Mojang >.<
This update wasn't bad, I don't see the point in moaning about it. Did is solve all problems? No. Was it a step in the right direction? Yes. Compare it to beta 1.8, and this world generator knocks it out of the roof. We got some form of a temperature system. Height variation was relaxed (But could be better). Not every biome looks the same with how many variations there are now.
We should be thankful Mojang at least attempted given the fact that they are trying to prioritize other things, instead of moaning about it.

agree with u. everyone have so many stuff to add that not all gets heard by mojang. just enjoy the new update.
I checked about 4-5 Shroom biomes and they all look the same, boring. D:
I thought they will fix that but I guess not... They just hurried up with the update.
Oh well! That was probably the last time they will touch the world generator.
If anyone can enjoy the new stuff, I am happy for you. Have a good time.
So will the thread get locked or what? Just wondering.
Can somebody make some mods that make the terrain actually GOOD? >.< Since Mojang obviously does not care.
Apologies, I don't know how to find this information in a 500+ page thread where the term 'mod' is used in completely different context most of the time, but given the passionate interest shown by so many posters, was there any collaboration done on a terrain mod to satisfy what people wanted here? I've never been so bothered by vanilla terrain that it ruined the game for me-- I play mostly SMP with vanilla, and mod my single player with other terrain-changing mods-- but I still mostly agreed with things brought up in this thread as suggested improvements. If anyone did make an improved terrain generation mod I'd be interested to see it.
(Never expected Mojang to implement this kind of change so I can't say I'm disappointed with how the terrain update went. At this point a decent mod is probably the only way it would happen exactly as requested.)
Eva, the Alternate Terrain Generation mod is trying to address some of the commonly mentioned issues, including making terrain height determined by global functions rather than biomes, producing a genuine climate structure for hot/cold and wet/dry, and broader biome transitions. Of course there's way too much disagreement on this thread for any mod (or anything Mojang could have done) to make everybody here happy (or maybe even most people). It's not ready for prime time yet - I'd call it a "workable alpha" stage, but the developer seems good at both programming and interacting with potential users.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.

The problems aren't really fixed. I would say that the thread is still valid and doesn't really need a lock and probably won't get one.

Exalm released a rough terrain fix in 1.5 or so, but besides Alternate Terrain Generator that's it.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Well, i really regret saying this, but cya, hopefully in the near future the terrain will slowly be fixed, but this is mojang were talking about, guess I'll be playing mostly terraria for now, and the only reason i'll go to minecraft is for creative, and servers
damnit mojang why couldn't you listen to this lonely, solitary, thoughtful, logical, non-fanboyish fanbase in the corner, but no, listen to the other fanbases with horrid ideas, though atleast you did something

1.7 pre-release is out. Just what I expected, another half-assed "terrain update." I'm outta here. Nice protesting with you all. Adios.
bye

It's something i guess.
???, that isn't going to fix the terrain (I think your asking for a new biome right?)
