Take it the way you want.
Notch worked months on the new terrain generator, you dont expect him to change his mind after a month saying : Nah, who cares , it took me 3 months but who gives a sh*t, delete everything and code the old stuff back ?.
When something as important as the terrain generator has been changed, the old one wont come back.
Take it or leave it, that thread is your only way to go back to the terrain you miss.

... Well no. Do you honestly expect they'd do that? What we (most of us, I think) want is a combination of the variety of the 1.7 generator + the size of the biomes and the structures of 1.8 and beyond. And yes, we miss the old terrain, but we also like a lot of the aspects of the new one. If you haven't thought about it, the flatness and the creation of mountain biomes could just be a rushed solution for the previously poorly placed NPC Villages.
And you just admitted the terrain generator is important. Thanks for your concern. It's obvious the old one won't come back, but Minecraft really isn't finished, is it?
The sad thing is, the OP of that thread thinks they have come up with some amazing new solution to the problem. Guess what, anyone who knows anything about Minecraft maps have known that you can have older terrain in a 1.0.0 map. Anyone who has moved their pre-1.8 map over to 1.0.0 knows that the pre-1.8 section doesn't suddenly cease to exist.
That thread is not the solution to this problem for quite a few reasons.
So? how do some hills in the forest biomes make up for the scenic landscapes generated in the old generator?
And before you call people "kiddo"...Your lack of any intelligent contribution to a thread you dont want to read puts whom in the "kiddo" position? (hint: Its you) :wink.gif:
No you are mistaken. My purpose was to contribute my thoughts about this subject, kiddo. Apparently having my own opinion results in some form of backlash. I am also curious to why you have joined a conversation that really wasn't directed at you. Did you feel a sort of urge to fight for the OP's bravado? If so, then that is pathetic.
Not necessarily. I have often found my "dark wood" forests to contain plenty of hills and cliffs. I have also found several small mountains with loads of trees on them. Oh sure you can complain and all, kiddo, but it won't do anything. My suggestion: Broadcast the message to prioritize Mod API and ask a community modder to create a drastic landscape mod.
I'm not much on mods but if someone made a 1.7+1.0.0 hybrid generator I'd be all over it.
I would doubt they would return to the old generator -- there would be just too many terrain border glitches created by it. I would, however, like to see them allow the selection of the new or old generator when a new world is created. That could potentially satisfy the people who like the old generator while opening the door for adding other alternative generators (built-in or via the API).
I give this idea a big ass tumbs up. I think this is a absolutly fabulous idea.... JEB LOOK AT THIS AND DOO!!!!!

I have been lost in the nether for a few days now.......
Terrain didn't become boring, the game did. You played it too much.
I agree with this, the terrain changes were :
- Bigger chunks, bigger biomes
- A more stable terrain, less mountains on average biomes and added them to an special biome
It barely changed, now they are bigger which doesnt matter, and most biomes still have elevations , arent completely flat , but not as much as before, but added all those weird and great looking mountains to a better biome.
There is no way the terrain got boring, the changes were not so big, just bigger chunks and a more stable terrain.
It's obvious that you don't realize what some people don't like about the new terrain generation (did you even understand the first post?). If you did, how can you say that it barely changed? Instead of just leaving your opinion, you say that the terrain generation threads are stupid and declare the people who don't like it as idiots. I find such replies really annoying and not well thought out. It is a fact that the terrain has less variety in it than before.
On Topic: It is very likely that terrain generation has a low priority at Mojang at the moment, so as long as it doesn't change I will play with (and I recommend) this mod: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/473776-181-the-nostalgia-projectno-biomes-x/
It doesn't improve terrain generation, but it allows you to choose old terrain generators and you can play with all the new features.
Less variety? , we have the same amount of biomes before ( even more ), we still have weird holes on the ground, some small elevations and even better, a huge biome for the best mountains ever existed.
We have more variety than before, just that mojang wanted to make some terrain more stable, not just mountains everywhere and make it hard to find a flat place to start building a house, in a game about building you cant expect a terrain like the one in terraria, with a bunch of huge mountains everywhere, Massive holes inside mountains.
The changes were good, if this game was about fighting and combat, then your answer would be valid, if it was an adventorous game we should have a terrain with more mountains, weird stuff everywhere, but in a building game we dont need that, we need a flat piece of land, fortunately for us, mojang also added caves and mountains, even better!

The only new biomes in 1.0 are swamp, ocean and mushroom, and from what I've seen, they aren't being recieved very well. We lost transition and temperate biomes, like the rainforest, beach, and savahnna biomes, as well as a few others I can't remember.
We have.. more variety than before? Care to back that up? Every world I load nowadays is forest, pine forest, plain, desert, mountain; oh, and I can't forget the glorious ocean biome. There's almost no variation within topography or tree density within actual biomes, every biome is about the same size, and... wait a second. I'm repeating everything this thread has already brought up. You clearly don't understand the issue here.
If Minecraft ISN'T a game about fighting and combat, then why did Mojang add enchanting, potions, and an END BOSS? If it ISN'T an adventure game, then what in the world is the ADVENTURE UPDATE all about? Would you honestly be satisfied with a flat plot of land, no monsters? Why limit the potential for minecraft to be a highly customizable building, adventure AND survival game?
There's no backing to your position; from what I've read of your posts, you're just yes-manning any changes Notch makes. I respect your opinion on the matter, but please think about your post before you post it.
Less variety? , we have the same amount of biomes before ( even more ), we still have weird holes on the ground, some small elevations and even better, a huge biome for the best mountains ever existed.
We previously had 11 biomes, now we have 9, that isn't more, it's fewer.

All of the pre-1.8 biomes were distinct, and now there are fewer biomes (and some, such as the mushroom island biome are very rare), so fewer biomes == less variety. I like how you use the word "stable" the same way we are using the words "flat" and "boring". The other added features like ravines could easily have been added to the old or new terrain generator, since it is added after the terrain is built. For villages, Jeb could have limited their generation to flat regions, or expanded a flat area of sand out from beaches (yet more variation removed), and placed them on the shoreline.

Considering that Notch has always pushed the "survival" aspect of Minecraft, good, random, rough terrain was a very important feature. And also considering that this 1.0.0 update was called the "adventure" update, it looked like Mojang was more interested in expanding Minecraft beyond a simple "building game".
Umm wouldn't that be 9 INCLUDING the new biomes. So before we had 11 biomes and now we have 9, with 5 fewer existing biomes from before. Really it's stupid when I can name the biome I'm in 9/10 times. In 1.7 I had no idea what kind of biome I could have been in. There were several similar looking ones and they could form in any size.
What is relevant to this thread: - Every seed looks the same
- There are a lack of trees in biomes that should have more trees
- No interesting landscape
- Why mountain biomes were a bad idea
- Hills are seemingly nonexistent
- Beaches are nonexistent
- Swamps were not made well
- Lack of tundras or any snow biome
- Biome-to-biome transitions need to be less sloppy
- Caves/caverns seem never ending a lot of times
- Abandoned mineshafts / ravines / etc abundance
- More interesting ocean biomes
- Everything is flat
1. I don't think they all look the same, but I agree that they don't change enough... 2. Yes, It appears to go straight from tree packed biomes, to treeless ones that should have them, in an instant!
3. I have seen some interesting mountain biomes but every other biome seems boring...
4. I agree with mountain biomes, as long as normal biomes can be crazy too!
5. Agree.
6. Agree.
7. I disagree. Swamps are well generated, but they just look damn ugly because of the colours...
8. Agree.
9. Agree.
10. I'm not sure if I like this or not...
11. Agree! 12. Agree. 13. Agree.
Just my thoughts. I think there should be a middle option on the poll for people who think that the terrain is not as good, but is not bad.
Well yeah, what I meant was that all the pieces combined were rushed to make the swamp. Other than just colors, the biome-to-biome transition from swamp to whatever isn't really pleasing.
As for number 10, I was just stating this because almost every cave I've been to is either seemingly never ending, or it leads to a huge abandoned mine. My friend went in one cave and got a lot of iron BLOCKS, diamonds, a lot of lapiz, and a lot of gold. My save file has less resources than he does, but I have never gotten so much iron out of one cave. I remember before 1.8 hit it took me pretty long just to get a stack of iron ore. Now I find it as abundant as stone. That's just my opinion and I will remove #10 if people want me to. But it is relevant to the repetitiveness of the terrain in a way.
ever since 1.8 theres too much water i can barely find a desert finding trees can be a bit** to find at times which could screw you i dont mind what they are adding but its kinda like a rushed sheep being whiped to get it to eat and grow wool which doenst make it seem like a a diamond of games

Jeb, forget about this (probably) 4 month mod thing. Anyone who wants mods is going to figure out how to use them. It can wait.
Fix the terrain options.

From a flat-to-mountain relative size standpoint, I would say that all three frames of the picture are pretty accurate.

Am I seriously the only one to notice it stopped at 1.6?
Or was it 1.5..
Whatever version it is, I still play alpha. c:
1.8+ Maps are too repetitive
Choice of old or new map generator?
Boring Terrain Generation
Difficult to say whether this link is related to old or new generator:
Larger scale terrain generation
Maybe people who vote 'Yes' on this poll should go out and support the GetSatisfaction pages.

I like it more due to not as much lag problems, there's also old trees.
