I have been around since alpha. I loved alpha too. Every Friday, you would get the 'Secret Friday Update' where everyone had to find out what Notch added. New things came in at a rapid pace and it was just a very cool game.
But now I have to wonder what is going on with this game. Notch seems to have lost his love for it, and as such I lost my love for it. I'm sure he hasn't, but has anyone else noticed how development of Minecraft seems really...slow?
Sure, Notch has had a lot on in the past few weeks. But get this:
For someone who has Minecraft as their job, Notch is even slower to update Minecraft than mod makers.
Notch seems to be taking a LOT of time to make these new updates. 1.8 is amazing, and the pre-release is also really REALLY good. But 2 months? To do HALF the stuff on his list!
Notch never seems to finish his updates properly now. Don't believe me? Name 1 update we have had in beta that has NOT had more than 2 bugs. Many of them get fixed a day later, but things like that update that broke the entire single player for a while shouldn't be there after 2 months.
Notch has a bigger team now. He should be able to pump out updates faster than ever. It seems Jeb is the only one who actually does work anymore. At least he gets credited by Notch.
I am not saying I can code a game better than Notch, but that is his job, and I am wondering how long he actually spends every day on these updates. 1 hour? 2 maybe? Clearly nowhere near what he used to. It shows too.
Another thing seems to be the community. They seem to have a relationship with Notch or something. Even some of the most thoughtful comments are spat out because they contain 'Minecraft' and 'needs work' in the same sentence. Everyone. Has. Opinions. If you don't like them, you don't have to. Just don't be a **** about it. With the popularity of Minecraft growing, more trolls are jumping on the bandwagon. Kinda like the Call of Duty effect.
Overall I feel my love for Minecraft slowly sinking. It has happened in the past, but it usually only took me a few days to come back. Even with the pre-release of 1.8 here, I am having trouble enjoying it. Notch also seems to be losing his love for the game. I bet you if Notch sat down and worked on this 8 hours a day for at least a week, we would be close to full release. Not only that, but the Minecraft full release is scheduled for when all the other big games of the year are coming out like Skyrim, MW3 and BF3. If Notch worked on Minecraft like he used to, he would have it out before BF3 I think.
I've been playing since Alpha 1.0
I might quit, because of 1.8... It doesn't feel like Minecraft
due to the new survival and creative mode. I'd now rather play Terraria.
the 'adventure' stuff to me just seems like mojang is whoring out to a broader audience. minecraft should be a building game at its base, there are tons of other games to go exploring and kill things and whatnot.
I think its because the features they've been adding recently are more necessary and less fun to make
like SMP support, nether working in SMP, better lighting engines to look better and run 1000x smoother.
Its a lot more technical than "add a new block". If you look at the new features they're also extremely complicated.
overhauling terrain generation code, NPCs in villages that won't seem like total Derps.
Notch himself said once that he tries to split things up between "fun programming" and "work programming" because the work stuff that lets the game run at all is a lot less fun than designing a new mob. & it can become tedious
What's that? The man who made the game we have enjoyed has a life? Surely this must be wrong! His marriage and other things surely must not have been filtering his time? This must not be allowed! Strip his outside priveledges away!

.... "minecraft should be"
I wasn't aware you were designing Minecraft, owned the rights to it, invented it or in any other way had a reasonably claim to say what minecraft "should be".
Notch can do whatever he wants with this game, its his. If he wants to slowly turn it into a FPS or playing card game he could.
If you don't like it try some mods. Or deal with it.
You really don't undestand how much effort it costs to only add the new gui for survival and creative? and than the new generation code, items etc. it is alot and costs much time.
3,415,079 people bought the game.
I payed 15 dollars for this game to support it. This means he should have over 40 MILLION DOLLARS from Minecraft. He is coding a game in JAVA. It is not that expensive compared to some other engines. I agree with your point about how long it takes to make a new generation code, but he should have plenty of money to make this. 40 million dollars should support any kind of family he decides to live with AND a game in Java.
If notch wanted to, he could of finished MC by now or have tons more content.
I'm so glad he took the grueling time earlier to work on SMP and server code.
I don't care if there's 10,000 blocks, not being able to play with friends on a stable, bug free server sucks.
I remember when there was no SMP. "content" can flood in after you get the basics working.
look at the bugs on the pre-release 1.8 right now.
would you rather he add more content with MORE bugs and make the game unplayable or smooth out the kinks before adding new stuff

The OP got me all of the sudden agreeing that maybe Notch could be working harder. Then you smite down those thoughts from my head. Thank you.
Nobody has the right to boss Notch around. You bought an alpha/beta of a game he works on for fun. You didn't buy slave Notch to code a game for you.
If he wants to quit production of the game or shut down all servers forever he could.
So if all he wants to do is work on this with a small team and do it the way he wants.... I don't think that's so bad now is it?
Why would he want to waste any money paying someone to add content he feels dosnt fit in the game????
Why dont you play classic then? Or even ask notch for an older jar :biggrin.gif:
Because these new features are GOOD! Every update has added some awesome stuff. But think about it: back then he added tons of awesome, game changing stuff in 2 days all by himself. Now it takes 2 months with a full team?
But every update is buggy and/or unfinished. Example: Nether. One of the most anticipated updates ever, ended up being one incredibly underused feature. Who actually uses the Nether now?
People also got excited for pistons. Took him a whole month I believe to get that update out. Played with pistons for 1 day, never touched them again.
Bottom line: Keep innovating the game, but please do it at a believable rate. I would understand if Notch had a job, but this IS his job.
I suppose it's what you make of it.. I mean there's the possibilities being added of going adventuring and killing things but after all nothing should stop you from building and being creative. As long as notch doesn't disable any original features only enhances them and adds to them, I'm happy.
But I agree, there hasn't been a lot of quality updates. I blame marriage. :tongue.gif: He'll get back to it... Hopefully...

No I'm sorry but the bottom line is you're just have this delusional entitlement problem
& I'll win this argument because no matter how much you cry or scream minecraft won't do what You want because You say.
You'll wait and have no control over notch because you don't. Night
people minecraft updates should be sped up because notch has a WHOLE TEAM of workers working for him. updates should come out faster! he just got married i know that but still he could work maybe he could teach his wife minecraft :laugh.gif:

I thought it was only Notch and Jeb working on pumping content into Minecraft, and that the rest of the team was so Notch wouldn't have to get migraines over responding to every single e-mail people send him for support/help due to how popular Minecraft became.
Most updates are bound to have bugs, but I do agree on the Nether. Hoping Notch will add some new stuff this October. Personally, I think the reason why a lot of the updates in stuff like Alpha and Infdev were seen as creative and original was because it was much easier thinking of what to put in to Minecraft. Fast forward to Beta, and it gets hard to become original with ideas that you would keep using or another rehash of an existing game mechanic- which may be only part of the reason why the updates take a long time. Just my two cents.
P.S. what do you mean pistons were boring and unexciting? I use them all the time, very handy for making minecart dispensers, hidden doors, etc. O:

Go read this: http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Version_history
Go to the bottom with Indev and Infdev. Read the patch changes. Not only are they frequent, but they are BIG and add heaps of things to the game.
I'm so glad he took the grueling time earlier to work on SMP and server code.
