I think the Endermen's effect would end up like the update when Notch made spiders able to climb vertical structures - there would be a quick panic moment when we all realized that we weren't safe behind our walls, but it quickly evaporated once we figured out how to counter them.

Well, you only need to avoid moving your cusor over them. Just look slightly to the side of them, or as stated before, shoot them if you happen to look right at them, so you stay 1 step ahead
Just checked the Minecraft Wiki to see what the "Enderman" actually was, this is the first time I have heard of this mob. But after reading the info I will just kill it like any other hostile mob, with either a sword or bow and arrows. Even though they are a passive mob and only get aggressive when you look away from them I will still just consider them as hostile and kill on site. I don't bother with Pigmen since they only attack when you hit them, not when you look away.
I have different thoughts on the "Enderman".
1: I think the mob and its abilities are interesting and it is something that I have never seen before in any game I have played. The idea of a mob that gets aggresive when you look away from them is cool. Plus they can charge at you and even teleport. They can pick up stuff and just look cool and creepy.
2: But, a part of me does not like it as it is just another mob to kill and worry with. I am fine with just the Creepers, Zombies, Skeletons, Spiders, Slime, Ghast and Zombie Pigman. Still wish to see a Spider Jockey. I have fun just hunting these guys and don't want to have to worry with fighting Enderman.
But I will hold off my personal judgment and personal opinion on the Enderman. I might really like them when I see them in action and learn what they drop when you kill them.
Here is a quote that I posted on another thread about my opinion on the Enderman.
I think I'll either be unafraid or "HOLYCRAPIPISSEDMYSELF" depending on the sounds they make.
I personally think silence is much creepier than noise.

Slimes, Zombies, Ghasts, Zombie Pigmen, Skeletons, Creepers, and Spiders.
All of them are slightly different in how they attack, or how we treat them.
Slimes: Smack with your sword.
Zombies: Smack with your sword.
Ghasts: shoot with arrows.
Zombie Pigmen: Smack with your sword.
Skeletons: Strafe around their arrows and smack with your sword.
Creepers: Smack with your sword, back up, and repeat.
Spiders: Smack with your sword.
I think unintelligible whispering would be nice. You're comfy within your house at night and you hear the whispering outside your walls from some direction.. Nevertheless, I'm sure Notch will provide us with some iconic sound :tongue.gif:

Whispering is a good idea. I think it could work quite if he made it so they only whisper while you are not looking at them, but as soon as you look at them (or they are within your vision) they go complete silent.

I don't wanna lose all my diamonds to endermen. That would suck. I think your right these aren't the greatest mobs ever. I think Notch could of done better.
You know... Instead of LOOKING AWAY form the enderman and triggering his charge, why not just RUN UP to him and beat him to death? They are a melee class, killing them won't be any more difficult than killing zombies as long as you don't let them get the jump on you...
I always thought they would make a dramatic sting noise, accompanied by all of the Endermen in the area looking at you. See, I always thought they would be more like cavemen, small groups of people who hunted and gathered on their own, going into some kind of dark shelter in the daytime simply because they dislike the light. They move in groups, and if they see a town they will attack it. Usually the town will be able to beat them back with numbers and weapons, since the Endermen are unarmed. If they do take a town, they will live inside it until they run out of stored food there or are killed. That would make them far more threatening than a lone, wandering Enderman.
I would'nt think that fighting an enderman will be too difficult. If you see one and you accidentally look at one, you may as well pull out your sword, get close it before it can attack and put in the first strike.

That is an awesome idea! it would make them a bit like dementors from Harry Potter though.

I was thinking the same thing. :smile.gif:
In a way, they do act like Redeads, staring you, making you NOT move, just like how Redeads paralyze you OoT or WW.
I wonder if tip toeing/sneaking will prevent the endermen from detecting you, just like the Oot redeads?
EDIT: Oh crap that's right, they aren't blind :sad.gif:
