You might say:
"But he was joking you trololol idiot go delete minecraft because that solves problems herp derp!"
Well, he isn't joking. How do i know? Let's look at the confirmed upcoming features:
NPC villages (Granted, he did plan these for a while. However, he decided to implement them after he went on a spree of playing terraria...his competition...as opposed to making things for Minecraft)
*Terraria Counterpart: The ability to make NPC villages (slightly different)
A new mob (New mobs planned all after his terraria spree...hm)
*Terraria Counterpart: Lots of different mobs
Different style dungeons (Again, after his terraria spree..)
*Terraria Counterpart: Different dungeons such as Underground jungle, Corruption, Actual Dungeon
More complex combat (After terraria spree, again)
*Terraria Counterpart: Methods of combat such as shooting star guns, magic, etc
More unique and interesting world generation (This is pretty vague...though the slew of underground and dungeon-related things he decided to add comes right from terraria)
*Terraria Counterpart: There's lots of different features in a generated Terraria world.
Big mushrooms (From terraria, again.)
*Terraria Counterpart: Underground giant mushrooms.
Underground ravines (Improving the underground, which is so prominent in Terraria. copying again)
*Terraria Counterpart: Most of the exciting things are underground.
If you can seriously come to this topic and say that Notch is not basing Adventure mode on Terraria, you are the most naive person I know.
- Notch stops producing content to aid his competition [play terraria]
- Notch plans adventure update after he decides to do something with his million-dollar corporation
- The update is based around things that make Terraria different/better than Minecraft
- You post on this topic saying Notch is not copying Terraria and that i'm dumb and should delete my minecraft files and play terraria.
And saying Notch took everything is like saying Terraria is nothing like Minecraft, or that Notch took blocky looks from Terraria.
Like I said, not everything is true.
I'm not saying he's making an exact copy of Terraria, the games are different. But a lot of the features Notch plans to implement are coming from Terraria. And the mobs might not be Terraria based, but after so many updates, the only mob we get is a Wolf. After he plays terraria, he decides to add even more mobs. What's a prominent feature of NPC interaction in Terraria? Different mobs.
Inspired by =/= Copy of. Could he have been inspired to add certain things to MC due to Terraria? Sure. Should we really care? No, because Minecraft isn't a 2D voxel based adventure game.
I'm sure you looked at someone else's work and said, "Hey, that's a pretty neat idea/concept/item/picture/etc! Maybe I'll add some attributes of said item to my works!" What Notch is doing is no different.
sounds like revenge, lol, terraria copied minecraft first, so i think hes smart to do this, all good things anyway, he should add the hookshot from terraria, that would be epic

If i wanted terraria features, i'd go play terraria. Sure there's inspiration. Inspiration in this case is the NPC villages and undergorund expansion. Copying is pretty much everything else i've listed.

Well, I'd have to say that the feeling is almost mutual; your childlike behavior and vindictive outlash toward Notch for no reason at all (other than suspected idea property-stealing) makes you look pretty stupid.
Instead of picking out things Minecraft has in common with Terraria (which Notch mentioned in passing during an interview that it's "supposedly the competition" or something to that effect) you should suck it up and realize that all intellectual property cannot be "original" because someone has unerringly thought of everything.

Not arguing that copying is imminent. I'm arguing that he's pretty much telling his community that "I'm a terrible developer, so i'm going to take the ideas that made my competition great and add them to Minecraft because i liked them in that game."
Sure, there's nothing wrong with taking somethings from other games, developers do it all the time. At least don't make it so obvious, and worst of all, don't make an entire game mode out of it. Sprinting and such are things that are so common because they're just important features that belong in games. Takings things that make games unique is copying, and that's what Notch is doing here. The best part of Indie development is you usually don't have to deal with big-time clones, and it's clear that both Minecraft and Terraria and moving towards your typical development style where two competitors copy off eachother [or in this case, minecraft just stealing from terraria.]
The only similarities between Minecraft and Terraria is the Java, and the fact that you have to mine for things. This was of course at the time of release.
This is finding things in nothing at all. While there is NO SHAME IN TAKING STUFF THAT WORKS, FROM OTHERS, some of these reasons are completely idiotic. "Adding ravines, oh well it must certainly be about this game who has no ravines, but do have something under ground!". I am not naive. You are a conspiracist, and I will point out that some things fit in, you cannot blame him. You can't either say that Notch can't add stuff to his game without it being anyone else's idea. I will base this on, that Minecraft has a lot of things going for it. It has the random generated worlds (Diffrent from Terraria, and also, the man changed some things in the way things is generated cause he's adding new stuff, hardly means he's copyieng Terraria)and the unique dimensional building. But all in all, Minecraft need some work, which is why it is still in Beta. He needs to polish the game, and things like fighting mechanism would be changed wether or not Terraria had come out.
Taking common things that work is fine, such as Sprinting and Flying. Taking unique features and implemented them yourself is not. This is what is happening.

Yeah, what about the millenaire mod? It adds npc villages. If every time a video game has npc villages, is it copying terraria. I don't think so. And he's not allowed to add a new mob because terraria has different mobs. You seem to be a minecraft hater, or just a plain troll. Terraria and minecraft are completely different games.

Also, you mean to say if he adds any adventure stuff at all, he's copying terraria. Such a plain bias that I won't even begin to imagine what your reply will be to this statement.

No, if you read you'd see that it was inspiration. NPC villages are common things that are staples in games. I'm not saying that things such as mobs are long overdue, but it's clear he got the idea from playing Terraria, because all these Terraria-esque expansions are coming after he played Terraria.

Just stop for a second and read the last section of the OP and you will understand.
Oh yes damn well it is. Almost everything is fine in development when it comes to ideas. And you haven't based your theories good enough. Some of these things are ridiculous. I'd like to point out one of those very very very unique details that Minecraft is based on. Square blocks. What is the first thing people saw when Terraria was released? Oh well. A unique detail. That unique detail was also taken from other games.
Terraria doesn't use square blocks. The blocks in terraria are rounded, indented and faceted. Sure, they use the same square canvas, but every graphic that's computer-rendered uses a square canvas. Plus, Notch using blocks is not unique, it's just laziness. Every game starts with a blocky-style like Minecraft, but they round and smooth things out so you don't feel like you're in a Lego world. Sure the blocky style makes Minecraft unique, but you can argue that any game in a developing stage is unique because the graphics they use aren't seen very often (because they don't look good)
Hmm lets see, it may almost be the same, but why are you making just a big deal? If you keep comparing Terraria to Minecraft and acting like Terraria is so superior to Minecraft then just go play Terraria.
Basically what the entire OP post boils down to, is that Notch will be adapting some features from Terraria to Minecraft, yes? To this I think no one would disagree.
The point I BELIEVE you are trying to make is that this would be a bad thing. On this point, I am sure that the majority of people who took a minute to think about it would disagree.
The basis of many "ideas" come from something else. It is very similar to how we improve upon existing technologies, such as the light bulb. If everyone had to re-invent the light bulb to try to improve upon the design, we would still be stuck with Humphry Davy's "platinum strip" light bulb. Making the argument that old ideas should not be used, is like saying that character progression in an RPG is a bad thing. Subjectively you are free to believe as you wish. Objectively speaking Notch should feel free to add ideas from other games (including Terraria) to improve the content in his own game. It only improves the players experience.
Those are all features I'm looking forward to in the new update, so what if he "copied" Terraria as you say he did, he's adding more content, why not be happy with that? I'm happy he's getting inspiration from Terraria, Minecraft has gotten so stale lately.
