I run a private server that caters to creative play. We are not so much into the game-play, but
love Minecraft for the "build anything" sandbox aspect. I have played MC in both Survival and
Creative modes and both have pros and cons.
Survival is fun, but if your focus is to create things, the need to stock basic items is a
detractor. (Ex: You want to dig a tunnel, but you have only 2 torches left, you have to spend
much time crafting them.). However, in Creative mode, you have everything at your disposal.
Even digging is instant!.. This makes Creative mode way too powerful. I cannot even count
how many times I accidentally destroyed a door or a lever when I meant to activate it instead-
and collecting diamonds or crafting tools becomes pointless.
I propose installing a set of tools that will enable the server operator (only) to modify Survival mode in the following way:
Have all items that are available in Creative mode toggle-able for free use. This would let the player have unlimited use of say,.. torches, iron pickaxes, cobblestones, and whatever.. The player would still have to go through the effort to make diamond pickax, etc... unless that item was toggled. The items (ideally) would not stack. There would always be 1 in the player inventory.
Add ability to enable/disable "/gamerules" via GUI
Add ability to change "/difficulty" via GUI
Add ability to toggle FLY, INSTANT BREAK and INVULNERABILITY via GUI (on all-players or a player-by-player basis)
This tool-set would let players on this server play creatively without the immersion breaking superpowers of Creative mode.
This tool-set could be implemented in various ways:
As an editable file similar to the server properties file
As a menu in the Minecraft game that is enabled if the player has OP-lvl4 status on the Multi-Player-Server or enabled in single player via a console command (/gamerule toggleitems true)
Or perhaps as a GUI for the Multi-Player-Server its' self.
Got tired of players power digging straight down and falling out of the world... Did some searching, found this... http://www.minecraft...l-and-creative/
It is similar in some respects but not the same...
@MrWubzy:
I know some of the commands can be done in the console, but I am suggesting integrating this into a nice easy to use menu the OP can pull up on the fly.
I checked into Bukkit. Yes, it looks like it could be created. However, "very easily" depends on your programming skill. I am NOT a programmer. If this mod does not exist it would be difficult for me to make.
@OdysseyGaming:
"Try thinking a bit more and continue to add to it." I will try to polish it a bit more. I will see if I can add a picture, it may be very helpful in showing where I want to go with this.
@ Non Supporters:
There are several functions built into the game that could be done with plugins, yet they are there. Redstone and mine carts being two of them. Please do not let your only objection be that a new feature could be implemented as a plugin.
Please explain WHY it would be better as a plugin (Ex: A menu is unnecessary if you are familiar with the console commands, or the program should be as streamline as possible and rely on plugins alone to expand functionality...) This would be far more helpful.
A lot of this is obsolete; we do not need a GUI, just because you are too lazy to type in the commands. A lot of the other things are also already possible as plugins in Bukkit.
It is better as a plugin because some people may not want these. Also, you should use the quote function to refer to people rather than using @<name>.

Thank you. This is helpful feedback. Obsolete? Not sure what you mean, but, Yes, I agree.. It would work as a plugin as many things do. But at the very least the infrastructure should be there to help customize server games. Also, Thanks for setting me straight on the quote thing. I am a new forum user. I have read the rules, but that one slipped by.
...we do not need a GUI, just because you are too lazy to type in the commands.
Don't cast dispersions. You don't know me. After a long day at work I want to come home and unwind.. usually I fire up the computer and play a game. I like the interface to be easy. If I wanted to type I would download Mavis Beacon. But yeah,.. maybe I am just being lazy. maybe I should dump Windows and go back to DOS, Or.. instead of pointing and clicking in Minecraft, I could just type : /setblock x y z 0 1 delete, then /give 1 1 3 if I want to mine stone.
I apologize for the sarcasm, but please... Do not insult. I like a conversation and I believe I have a point. Otherwise I wouldn't have posted. Maybe this shouldn't be a point and click thing, If you have a good argument, I can be swayed. But, a well designed graphical user interface promote only efficiency; not laziness.
This could very easily be created via Bukkit plugins, and you can already do a lot of this with pure vanilla controls as an OP. Sorry, no support.

Some servers have a plugin called Essentials Signs. Using said plugin a sign called [Free] can be placed. The name is typed below. When right-clicked, players open up a chest full of the item, refilled when players leave the "chest." I think this is what you want.

Obsolete basically means useless and pointless. You should look up words in the dictionary that you do not understand. Anyway, servers are already customisable enough; and frankly, if you are willing to go to the "trouble" (as some people call it) to set up a server, than adjusting the options shouldn't be any more difficult.

Your being unreasonable here. Those casts are completely far apart. You cannot compare Minecraft commands and a GUI to Windows and DOS. There is a difference between "user friendliness" and "cure for laziness". Sorry to be harsh there, but it needs to be said.

It is not an insult, it is simply an indirect cast to describe the way that your suggestion appears. Basically, your suggestion just a way to cure laziness. Otherwise, they would add a GUI for everything else that would "improve effectiveness" such as summoning and mob spawning.
I don't think Minecraft really needs a GUI just to help people that are new to the game, or can't be bothered writing and/or learning the commands. Also, I'm pretty sure GUI Commands has been suggested before, making this suggestion (or parts of it) redundant!

I understand the word "obsolete" to mean: No longer in general use due to advancements causing uselessness or ineffectiveness. (Digital media has made the film camera obsolete.) The command line was one of the first methods of input for computers. The GUI came later. By definition, a GUI cannot be made obsolete by a command line. If your car engine throws a rod, it becomes useless but not obsolete. A pay phone is obsolete but it certainly has a point to it's being. Here is some advice that I heard recently: You should look up words in the dictionary that you do not understand.

I think you can make a comparison. Obviously DOS and Windows are way more complex than Minecraft, but the basic acts of typing versus point and click were the perview of the comparison. I am(or was..) very familiar with the DOS command line. you can do anything that Windows can do in DOS just by typing it in. You can even write programs and run them as batch files! Windows was first a graphical user interface for DOS and grew from there. People used it because it was very convenient. You could turn on the computer and get to what you want to do without having to navigate a technical text adventure to do it.

Minecraft already has a GUI. The programming is already in place to generate the visuals. and I really believe you are missing the point of having a GUI for this. It is not for new users or people who can't be bothered to type the commands, The point is to make the process faster. Pulling up a menu and clicking check boxes is so much faster than trying to type in the name of a player who is abusing his power.
Some servers have a plugin called Essentials Signs. Using said plugin a sign called [Free] can be placed. The name is typed below. When right-clicked, players open up a chest full of the item, refilled when players leave the "chest." I think this is what you want.
I appreciate the suggestion, but this isn't it.
I am currently using a complex mechanism of command boxes and repeaters to refresh the players inventory of torches and cobblestone. It is pretty rough but it refreshes the two inventory items automatically without the players having to do anything. I can simulate this in-game without any mods this way. Having the players go to a chest to replenish would also, kind'a work, but it would be less ideal than it is now. I also have a lever that stops time! [toggles the day/night cycle]
I like the suggestion about adding mobs and other stuff to a spawnables GUI. That is out of the scope of this idea, as you wouldn't want players spawning creepers all over the place. But, I could definitely see this being used by an administrator who wants to run a game like he is a DM. Good idea!

That does not add anything to the argument. That is also irrelevant. I don't care what you can and can't do with DOS; we are not talking about DOS here. We are talking about Minecraft, and your suggestion.

I really don't think vanilla Minecraft needs this.
Having unlimited use of certain items is already possible with the Essentials plugin (/unlimited <id>) and what you suggest seems like the things that a hacked client would have, and I don't think they would ever be implemented into Minecraft. Plus, your suggestion defeats the entire purpose of the game itself.
