We have 5 types of sword. Wood, Stone, Iron, Gold and Diamond. Why do we only have 1 type of bow and fishing rod? You may argue; because stone bows or rods make no sense! That would be true. Except you are thinking only in terms of the WSIGD progression tree. What about an OBSJDA style progression?
Different types of wood would have different properties. Oak may be powerful however has a tendency to snap. Birch may be flexible but weak. Essentially, all the different types of wood would have their own pros and cons to better suit the different types of archer.
This would require sticks to have metadata however that ought to be easy enough to implement; and may mean sticks dropping from leaves becomes a reality!
Properties Oak would be strong and powerful, capable of shooting 50% farther than now. However, if kept in its maximum position, it will damage itself 1 every second. If it gets to 0, it will snap! This bow has a nice, 375 uses.
Birch would be weak, capable of shooting 40% shorter of the current bow. However, this means the bow is incredibly flexible and will not snap; not even under the toughest of circumstances (unless it wears out with normal use). 450 uses.
Spruce is rather similar to oak. It is very stiff and only has two stages. However, it shoots rather far, 25% farther than normal. It does snap incredibly easily though so one must be careful to not let the damage bar drop too low. This has 250 uses.
Dark Oak is a dense wood and therefore very similar to spruce. It however is also not very powerful, only shooting 95% of normal. It however does not snap very easily. This has 325 uses.
Acacia is a flexible wood. It shoots 5% farther than normal and is rather flexible. This wood has 400 uses.
Jungle is also a flexible wood that shoots relatively far, having a good tensile strength. However, it only has 275 uses due to its open grain.
It's not really "progression" since all of the woods are in the same tier since they can be obtained at the same point. Also, you wouldn't really call tool progression "WSIGD progression" because gold equipment is (roughly) in the same tier as stone.
This is an unnecessary nerfs bows. Bows currently have 385 uses, but the most durable bow (birch) only has 200 uses. Not to mention that pretty much every bow is either weak in combat yet somewhat durable, or good in combat yet flimsy as heck. No support because of that; bows aren't really all that OP unlike, say, iron armor. Were they balanced better, i'd probably support this, but the idea in and of itself isn't too original (granted none of the other threads like this AFAIK have been updated to accommodate for the new wood types introduced in 1.7). EDIT: You fixed the durability issue, so nevermind.
Because of the durability issues this adds, the only bow that would really be worth enchanting is birch (or maybe oak under certain circumstances) since it actually lasts long enough for you to use it.
The oak uses and the snapping mechanic seems a little bit confusing, it hast 175 uses if you dont hold it too much so its pretty relative...
The problem with spruce is that oak is generally more common that spruce and with more uses and snaps like birch, i dont think it would be good enough to use. (IDEM dark oak)
Overall im not sure about the uses of some bows like spruce jungle and dark oak, i would personally use birch or oak, the idea is good overall too but it doesnt seem to be balanced enough.
I like this idea, but I don't understand something. Would an oak bow just damage itself for no reason ever 2 ticks (Btw, tick is shorter than 1/20th of a second, so it'd be destroyed rapidly) or would it have to be drawn in order to cause itself damage?
You didn't seem to say how snapping happens. Do you mean durability? And 60% shorter means 40% of the range. Which is VERY low. A bit unbalanced, but I like the idea of bows of different wood types.

Why Minecraft mobs should NEVER have multiple attacks:
- No other PC mobs do. - Mob behaviour is intended to be simple.
Why you should NOT name new "special ability" weapons as "XXX Swords":
- No other swords have special abilities. - Make a new kind of weapon.
It would be easier to compare to the present bow and decrease the chance of damage/shoot-distance confusion.
I support the idea overall.

Do people from the TAU constantly check on the posts I have made? Because it is odd that I see one or two people from there who never venture out of the section popping up in reputation and threads.

That thread ought to be called the Fletching Overhaul as it deals with arrows. My thread deals with bows.

If you read it, you would notice that it contains no new bows at all, just new arrows and slightly different damage mechanics.

Also, if you think something is imbalanced, tell me how it could be more balanced!

When I mean 60% shorter, I mean 60% of the original distance. I will fix that.
Oh. Thanks for the clarification. Instead of putting stuff in paragraphs, I would rather prefer a more readable format like this:
Wood Type : Birch
Shoot Distance : 60%
Durability : 117%
Damage : 100%
It would be easier to compare to the present bow and decrease the chance of damage/shoot-distance confusion.
I support the idea overall.

Anyway, I like this idea. I myself would like to have an expansion on the game's bows, with some nice sidegrades.
Support.
Not that I mind. xD
