You and me aren't thinking about the same hell. I'm thinking about the death place. DEATH! NO LIFE! DEATH!
I guess not. I'll let you have your opinion, but I still think having hostile life would really save the Nether from its current position as just a place you go to get potion ingredients. Also, I'd like for you to cite exactly where Mojang says there's not supposed to be any life in the Nether.
Nether trees shouldn't be the same shape as overworld trees. Overworld trees have adapted to a world where the sun is above, and the soil is below. This is not the case in the nether.
Also, why not base the trees off of giant netherwart? We have giant mushrooms, so I think giant netherwart would fit nicely next to them. I've always thought bonemeal should do something for netherwart.
Basically I think there should be two kinds of growths in the nether. First, there should be large, flat mats that grow overtop of lava, to indicate that they're trying to get the energy from the lava.
Second, there should be giant stalks that reach all the way from the floor to the ceiling, with only the occasional lonely nether leaf (or special netherwart, or whatever) block along the length of it.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.

I never said mojang said that, but it's something that a lot of people agree on, and it is just kind of, there. I'm not saying there is life, but it seems that if it is a fire realm, plants should grow.

I can think of giving the trees many shapes. Probably several different shapes.
1) The oak-shape: The most common.
2) Wart-shaped: Uncommon.
3) A shape similar to Huge Mushroom Tree from Twilight Forest mod: Rare.
4) Possibility of what you said.
I never said mojang said that, but it's something that a lot of people agree on, and it is just kind of, there.
I'm going to need more to go on other than "it's just kind of there". You need reasons for your statement. For example, I have reasons for why the Nether should have life in certain places.
1: Adds variety to an otherwise boring dimension.
2: Lets the player survive there with no resources (punching wood).
3: Give Mojang opportunities to add new mechanics to open up more possibilities like fire retardant wood and plants that do damage.
Now present me with reasons why the Nether would be better off not having that stuff, or other ways this could be accomplished.

I like variety. I can get behind that.
1) The oak-shape: The most common.
But why is the oak shape the most common? Oak-shaped trees don't make sense in the nether. If they happen at all, it should be the rarest.

Cool.
To the people arguing about life in the Nether:
I think what Mojang was trying to avoid was making the Nether just a retextured overworld [ie. if you want scary-looking trees so bad, just get/make a texture pack with gross red trees]. This is what the Aether ultimately became, with aeather-stone, aether-dirt, and aether-wood. The thing that Mojang has always intended about the Nether is that it's supposed to be complementary with the overworld. They want players to have strong, survival-based reasons for moving back and forth between both dimensions.
Oh and yes, I realize I'm appealing to Mojang's intent without any evidence. To be clear, I don't actually care what Mojang intended. This is just how I perceive their intent, and I think it's a good way to think. If you want to argue with that, you're going to have to argue why it's not a good idea to have the dimensions be dependent on each other.

1. It is pretty much hell.
2. It is fire, so nothing should grow.
3. We need at lease one place were nothing grows.
3b. It adds some verity.

1. I always thought that the end was more of a hell...
empty, desolate, filled with demons, And inescapable.
2. i like the idea but if you don't want netherwart and brewing then fine.
3. Absolutely nothing grows in the end...
3b. Variety? I am going to guess you mean having a world chock full of just lava.
OT; I like the idea. I would love trees in the nether.
Really like the Nether jungle picture, that would be awesome.

It does add variety. There is nothing else like it in the minecraft world. As much as you don't think so, that's what variety. And a jungle would ruin it. It would just look wrong there. And just so everybody knows, you can talk at me as much as you want, but I'm still not going to support.

I was ask if you were meaning veriety since it was spelled wrong...
I just said the jungle would be interesting... Did you look at the photo? the Nether needs variety! It is a desert that is barren except for lava and strongholds. Okay then sorry for your loss.

It i supposed to be barren. I may not mind if there a few trees here and there. But no, I repeat, NO jungles!
The nether is boring, and the more we keep it the same the more boring it will get. Maybe it could work like nether fortresses, and you can find rare forrests or something of the sort that, although are living, are corrupt to all hell. How else would darker themed items/blocks ever be added to minecraft without doing something to the nether? I like the nether, but it is way too easy and way too boring to go into now. Ohhh, look... glowstone... scary. The areas could have dangerous quick mobs along with the lava of the nether that make it scary to approach them.
Normal trees do grow in the Nether. This tree does not add anything significant to Minecraft. While the Nether needs more diversity (which Mojang has slowly been adding), this is not the source. I don't hate the idea, but I don't support it for vanilla Minecraft.

I give full support. A couple of days ago I went into the nether for the first time in my world, and I forgot how boring the place is. I went in, got some soulsand, netherwart, blaze rods, quartz, bricks and netherrack and now I only come back to get a few more blaze rods. There's really not much to do.
Arguments: Argument: But the nether is supposed to be hell! Nothing should grow! Counter Argument: So that's an excuse to leave the Nether with the almost no variety at all? Whatever you can find there, you can find EVERYWHERE. At least have something you see here and there.
Argument: Anything that would grow would simply burn! Counter Argument: Fireproof wood. It's fireproof.
Argument: Lively plants don't fit the dead hellish setting. Counter Argument: Yeah, so that's why at times eyes pop out to stare at you, there's a ghost's face on the trunk and you are poisoned or withered when you touch it. Also, it's purple and the leaves are blood-coloured (well, a bit lighter).
Come at me bro. I'm on the the kitty's side.

I hate people who type in proper grammar and spell words properly on the internet. I hate hypocrites.
I could support a strange "hellish" plant-type... thing in the Nether. But a normal wood tree wouldn't last two seconds there. I know Minecraft isn't all realism, but still.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
For all those people blathering about the Nether and hell, I have two things to say.
1. The Nether wasn't intentionally created to reflect hell.
Notch is one of those guys who is very careful about the words he uses to describe things. Did you see how he winced at himself when he said 0x10c out loud? He was trying super hard to leave it ambiguous and let the consumer decide how to say it. Same thing with the nether as hell. Notch was clearly inspired by some kind of mythological "hell" but he didn't want to be constrained by any one mythology. I don't know if he ever slipped up and called it "hell" out loud, but we can be pretty sure this is what was on his mind.
Besides, video games have a long tradition of "hell" levels with varied degrees of faithfulness to any particular mythology. Hell is just a fun place to have a video game level.
2. Who are you to tell us what hell looks like?
This contradicts your number 1 point. If someone else can't tell you what hell looks like, then neither can you. We can take cues from mythology, other video games, role-playing games, literature, etc. But ultimately it's the creators of the game (or mod if we're doing a hell mod) who get to decide what fits. Though they get a lot of help from the community. And sometimes the community is wrong.
Remove the Herobrine eyes, and I support. The eyes look just weird, and we definitely don't need Herobrine references in the game itself.
A little late, since Enderman is partly inspired by Herobrine. Besides, I wouldn't have even noticed the Herobrine connection until it was pointed out. Once again, Notch's philosophy of not saying something out loud, might have served us better here. [I say "might have", because I personally don't share Notch's philosophy all the time. Sometimes I think the words themselves are important, and you need to say things out loud or type them in order to convey your vision.]
I guess not. I'll let you have your opinion, but I still think having hostile life would really save the Nether from its current position as just a place you go to get potion ingredients. Also, I'd like for you to cite exactly where Mojang says there's not supposed to be any life in the Nether.
