Armor points being on the UI is pretty pointless. It clutters up space needlessly, and takes up room that could be taken up by better mechanics (Thirst, stamina). It should instead be moved to the inventory screen- you don't need to see how many armor points you have at all times, and if you ever need to, you can quickly hit the inventory key to see.
As a side note, HUD's should only contain information that is needed at almost all times (for any game). Things like health, hunger, what items you have in your toolbar- all good. But you pretty much never need to see your armor points.

"Better mechanics"? Thirst is a horribly tedious game mechanic that would literally not make the game harder (having even less of an impact than the food bar change) just because of the fact that water is EVERYWHERE! Literally, it is everywhere, even in the desert is everywhere.
Stamina is also in the game in the form of the food bar, there are a few invisible variables that affect the food bar and one of those affects how fast the food bar depletes, and while running/jumping the food bar depletes faster. That seems like a pretty good substitute for stamina without taking up any more screen space.
Second of all, being able to see how much armor defense you have on at any given moment can be quite useful. If I see a group of skeletons and I am deciding whether to go around them or take them on, I can just look at my armor bar to help me decide. Sure, I could open my inventory and look there like you are suggesting, but it is more convenient to just look at my HUD already on my screen.
THIRD I actually like it on the hotbar because it makes the hotbar nice and square, satisfying my OCD, I don't think it makes it cluttered.
Now the serious third reason, just because the armor bar is on the HUD doesn't mean Mojang can't add in new game mechanics, it isn't like "Oh darn, we have this armor bar already on the HUD, I guess we can't go implement (whatever game mechanic should have an HUD bar)"

The armor points so a perfect purpose. Its simple and extremely obvious if you would stop pining over you quest to make every one else miserable by adding thirst. And its this:
SO YOU CAN SEE HOW MUCH ARMOR YOU HAVE!
If you walk out your door with a full suit of iron armor on the bar will be mostly full. I think its eight and a half armor icons and you go adventuring and suddenly notice that it is down to three armor icons well you now know that you need to look in your inventory to see what armor needs replacing. Simple as that.

Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.

Exactly. If not perfectly rectangular it annoys me to pieces.

It was an idea. One that would require expansion in other parts of the game (simply tacking on thirst would be horrible- it'd be the same as hunger). I'm not saying they need to remove armor then add thirst. It's just something that can't properly be added unless they clear up some space from the HUD.

A HUD is something you have for information you need at all times. That's not something you need to know at all times. You can just hit the inventory key quickly, and it could be something that you can tell within like a split second, and then go back. That's not a huge deal at all- especially since it's not even that hard to keep track of how much armor you have in your head.

If you had a sixth bar (Health, hunger, armor, experience, and oxygen being the invisible fifth), it would become really cluttered, and start to look like an MMORPG. Minecraft's HUD is basically at its limit- adding anything more without taking anything away would really start to clutter things up.
The armor points so a perfect purpose. Its simple and extremely obvious if you would stop pining over you quest to make every one else miserable by adding thirst.
Wait, what? I've not said they needed to add thirst (although if done well and worked with the other mechanics of the game, it'd be pretty nice and make it more survival-y...). Where do you even get that from?
You can do exactly the same thing by tapping the inventory key for a split second. It's not needed to know how much you have at all times. Do you need to know how much oxygen you have at all times? No, because it's not always needed, either. Just because it does something doesn't mean it needs to be kept on the screen.
If you walk out your door with a full suit of iron armor on the bar will be mostly full. I think its eight and a half armor icons and you go adventuring and suddenly notice that it is down to three armor icons well you now know that you need to look in your inventory to see what armor needs replacing. Simple as that.
Or, you hear your armor breaking (there's a pretty recognizable sound in the game for it), quickly hit your inventory key, and it ends up the same exact way.
Tell you the truth, I don't support. Without this bar, I would never know when I lost pieces of my armor.
How about that noticeable "CLINK" sound? Or how about tapping your inventory key after a long, hardened battle to see how much durability you have (something you probably should be doing anyway, and something that isn't even shown on the HUD).
Just because Mojang made it and it's there doesn't mean it needs to stay.
If you take a fairly short fall and die because you suddenly realize that you forgot to check your health and had too little health to be making the fall, that was your own fault. You forgot to check your health, you were not paying attention. Health bars are very important, naturally--you die when it depletes! That is why it is shown at all times. It can go up and down through many ways and is important to moniter.
Your armor breaking is not the end of the world. Not only can you tell when it breaks, but you can easily check on it anytime you need to. If you really have something against pushing a button to view your armor durability and armor points, I have an adjective for you: lazy. You do not need to see armor points at all times. When it goes down, it is not of pivotal importance that need be checked at all times. The world does not end when your helmet breaks. If you forget to check on your armor or replace it, that is your own forgetfullness and/or not paying attention.
Never use a personal problem as an excuse for something (OCD).
The thirst and stamina was just a suggestion he mentioned briefly that would take its place, so it would be evened out again anyway. Discussing the mechanic is off-topic.
All in all, I'd love to see the armor points gone from my screen at all times.
I agree with insurrection, the armor system is too simplistic at the moment to have a need for an armor bar above my health bar as Diamond > Iron > Chain > Gold > Leather. However I believe there should be a Defense Rating = (number) in the inventory window in the rare case where a person might mix their armors and not know how protected they are.
The armour bar is something you really need to see in long battles, and that's a time when you can't afford to be pausing to press E.
I agree. Although you really aren't in too many long battles unless on a PvP server. The reason I don't support this suggestion is because of what colorfusion said, the fact that while it doesn't serve too much purpose, there isn't a point in removing it unless there is a better system that could use the space. And also because I made a suggestion that would improve it by showing you exactly what armor you are wearing without needing to open the inventory screen.
Why isn't this thread about making it better, instead of removing it because it "takes up room that could be used by better mechanics"? Especially since those mechanics said don't exist yet.

Practically anything could just be plastered onto people as their "own fault" to bring attention away from the flaws of ideas. You could also be classified as lazy too; you can't be bothered to make a texture pack to hide the armour points so you selfishly demand developers to hide a bar important for many people.
As mentioned above: the time when you are most likely going to use it you can't check it any time you want, in battles where you'll be worrying about your armour you aren't going to have time to casually stop running/fighting, open up your inventory, check your status, then close it and try to continue the fight because you'll already be dead. If you're thinking this stop in combat is easy and convenient then you really don't have much experience in PVP, it would be a major annoyance.
UI's should be intuitive and easy to use, calling the user lazy when it is too frustrating to use is lazy itself.
Making a texture pack is a bit of a different story, I think. (You're also assuming I haven't done something like make a mod or texture pack before for this solution!)
In any case, all of that reallyyyy only applies to PvP. Or if you're in some kind of knockout PvE arena with lots of mobs. I can see how it's useful in PvP (or over the top PvE), but that is not how many people spend time on Minecraft. I would not mind if, at the very least, I could turn the armor points off so they would not display even when wearing armor. I also wouldn't mind improving it somehow. Your own suggestion of having it only show up when enemies are near is also valid. All I meant was as it is now, I'd rather see it gone from my screen. An option? Fine. Improved on? Also fine.

Support. And to you Natecraft. Read before you post. Those were suggestions for better mechanics. Not necessarily being better, he has a point.
Why get rid of it? It has been there for an extremely long time, and it really doesn't take up that much space. Besides, it's kinda helpful to know how much armor you have in a point value right before your eyes at all times and whatnot. In addition, I severely doubt that Mojang will even add thirst or stamina bars to MC anyway, no need for that stuff.
Support. And to you Natecraft. Read before you post. Those were suggestions for better mechanics. Not necessarily being better, he has a point.
Not really. Sure it COULD be used for a better mechanic, but that doesn't mean the Armor on the HUD should be removed, at least not until that new mechanic is added. Right now the entirety of the suggestion is:
"Remove part of the HUD that is useful for some people (and not hurting anyone regardless) because something could possibly be put there in the future."
Which makes it entirely pointless. I might as well suggest that we change the crafting recipe for the pickaxe to something else because there is a chance in the future there could be something else that could use the recipe.

I don't think it should be removed, but in a different place. Like Halo's HUD, which some changes, heath could be on the top of the screen and hunger and armor should be on the sides. I hate the HUD too because it obstructs me whenever I use a map, but otherwise it's fine.

Two major points, my HUD has a massive amount of open space to either size, whether it's cluttered or not depends no how large the client window is (Hint, use the launcher, much more space.). 2 layers & the hotbar isn't cluttered, even 3 layers is manageable. Also, even on Vanilla, it takes at least 5-10 seconds for me to open my inventory, with mods I actually have crashed (From lag alone.) from trying to open my inventory. On Hardcore (And on Hard difficulty.) survival, Endermen kill in 2 hits when you have armor on, 1 without armor, so I'd want to know if I had armor before having a stare-off with an Enderman.
