If any of you have played with the IC2 mod before then you will know where these ideas came from. I don't remember their actual names from IC2 as I have not played it in a long time.
Grinder block: Takes blocks/items and breaks them down to a different item if available. Example: Cobblestone becomes gravel, gravel becomes sand. Bones and blaze rods can be inserted to yield more bonemeal/blaze powder than you would obtain from simply crafting them in your inventory. GUI would be similar to the furnace: Fuel slot, input slot, and output slot, and would also give the player XP orbs as furnaces do.
Compactor block: Takes blocks/items and compacts them into a different item if available. Example: Sand becomes sandstone at a 1:1 ratio. Probably wouldn't have as many uses as the grinder block, but I don't see why not to include it as well. Would also have a GUI similar to the furnace.
I doubt these would ever be added, but they'd be fun. It would also help with the recent bonemeal nerf.

This example doesn't even make intuitive sense. If you, with your hands (i.e. crafting table), require four sand blocks to make sandstone then an industrial type machine would be expected to be more efficient at compacting. I'd expect 8 sand blocks or so to be required to make a sandstone block from a mechanical compactor. It's should be better at compacting.
HOW THE ABSOLUTE HELL IS THIS NOT PLAGIARISM!!???
Sorry, just needed to blow off steam, but seriously! Half the ideas suggested these days that get popular have already been suggested by me! http://www.minecraft...rcrusher-block/
Shut up, you did not come up with these ideas yourself. Because you suggest something doesnt mean it is yours. (@steven42lol). They came from the industrialcraft 2 mod. Their actual names are the Macerator and Compressor.

Exactly, but...

Anyway, I support this. Can we get some recipes?
